This thesis provides a comparison and study of English folk music collected by composers Percy Grainger and Ralph Vaughan Williams in the early twentieth century. Individuals who played a key role in beginning the folk music collecting movement are discussed, as well as the Folk Song Society's position in regulating and organizing folk-song collecting. A brief biography on Grainger is provided, along with his methods of collecting and setting folk-songs, and his ideas and processes on "free music." Machine Learned Melody Matching Using Strictly Relative Musical Abstractions, Michael Joseph Kolta

We implement and evaluate a machine learning approach to improve systems for searching a database of music via melodic sample. We explore symbolic and aural input queries and test our prototypes with extensive user surveys. Our main contribution is to combine the following four elements. First is to create a unique musical abstraction that accounts for both pitch and rhythm in a relative manner. Second, our system allows for approximate matching of imperfect queries via the utilization of the Smith-Waterman algorithm that was originally designed for approximate matching of molecular subsequences, such as DNA samples. The following chapters present an overview of the compositions I wrote as part of my graduate studies toward the Master of Music degree. They are presented chronologically in the order they were composed. Each piece was written to achieve goals and meet challenges that I took into consideration during the compositional process.

Hip Hop Rhetoric: Relandscaping The Rhetorical Tradition, Roberto Jose Tinajero Ii

This dissertation is a rhetorical analysis of hip hop music and culture. Chapter 1 focuses on adding hip hop rhetoric to the discussion and terrain of rhetoric and writing studies and to the rhetorical tradition. Chapter 2 uses the rhetorical notion of kairos to discuss the ethos of hip hop culture and discourse. Chapter 3 uses hip hop rhetoric to discuss the tensuous-solidarity between Latinos and African Americans. Chapter 4 focuses on Latino/Borderland Hip Hop and discusses the multi-consciousness of Latino identity. Chapter 5 focuses on Christiian religious imagery in gangsta rap music. There is also a short conclusion.

From Contradanza To Son: New Perspectives On The Prehistory Of Cuban Popular Music, Peter L. Manuel

While it is often claimed that the Cuban son emerged from rural Oriente and “invaded” Havana in the early 20th century, serious Cuban musicologists have clarifi ed that the true consolidation of the genre took place in Havana after around 1910–1920. Examination of 19th-century sources can help us trace with greater specifi city the origins of the particular musical features that distinguished the traditional son. Editions and descriptions of 1850s–1860s Havana contradanzas illuminate much about urban popular dance music of that milieu. In par-ticular, they reveal the presence of features typically associated with the son, such as melodies in duet …

A Performer's Analysis Of Isang Yun's Monolog For Bassoon With An Emphasis On The Role Of Traditional Korean Influences, Laura Hauser

Korean born Isang Yun (1917-1995) was a highly successful composer of Western avant-garde music who infused traditional Korean elements in works composed in a Western musical context. This monograph discusses the use of traditional Korean musical style and performance practices in Isang Yun's Monolog for bassoon, his only solo work for this instrument. Yun draws on a wide variety of East Asian elements for inspiration; from traditional Korean musical stylistic components, genres, and instruments, to Taoist and Buddhist religious philosophy. The Monolog for bassoon exemplifies Yun’s application of East Asian elements in his compositions and is a work growing in …

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of participation in performing ensembles on listening practices of adolescents. Specifically, this study looked at whether the focus of choral students while listening to music was more on the lyrics and their meaning and if the focus of band students was more on the instruments in comparison with each other and students enrolled in general music classes. A secondary interest of this study was to uncover the listening preferences of adolescents. Middle school students enrolled in band, choir, or general music classes (N = 23) served as participants. Italian baritone Pasquale Amato (1878-1942), who sang at the Metropolitan Opera in New York from 1908–1921, was regarded by critics and colleagues as a leading baritone of the early twentieth-century. Amato appeared in several United States and world premieres, most notably as Jack Rance in Giacomo Pucinni’s La fanciulla del West (1910), and often performed alongside Enrico Caruso. After leaving the Met in 1921 and touring Europe until 1926, Amato returned to the United States. His struggle to find substantial work eventually led to his pursuing teaching. This annotated bibliography of academic writing on women in rock in pop should provide an overview of most of the scholarly literature on the topic and reflects my personal interest in methodology. When I returned to graduate school in the late 1990s to study American studies and popular culture, I discovered that academe had changed considerably from my undergraduate days when I studied history of art. Although traditional academic disciplines continue, I found that in the humanities and social sciences, there were no longer neat categories for disciplines and disciplines no longer were isolated from each other.

The Direction We Grow is a composition for orchestra, solo soprano, and choir. It is a summation of the compositional knowledge I’ve accumulated throughout my undergraduate and graduate programs at LSU. The piece reflects my compositional style, which is characterized by rich melody and complex rhythm. With sweeping melodic motives, climactic builds, and percussive coloration, the piece incorporates characteristics of the Classical, Romantic, and Impressionistic musical periods. The piece is palindromic in structure. It builds upon a simple, celestial one-note motive and introduces new melodic patterns until it finally morphs into a steady, percussive section. This thesis examines Claude Debussy’s Proses Lyriques, a set of four chansons published in 1895. These songs were composed during a pivotal time in the composer’s life—concurrent with Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune, the String Quartet, and the commencement of work on Pelléas et Mélisande. Also noteworthy is that out of a complete output of over 90 songs, these are the only published works with both text and music by the composer. Because of this unique property, the Proses Lyriques allows researchers, analysts, and performers to gain valuable insight into Debussy’s intertwining of music and text. High School Students' Attitudes Toward Single-Sex Choir Versus Mixed Choir, Jenna Leigh Jackson

Participants in this project included high school choral students (N = 54) from central Mississippi and their directors (N = 3). Participants were enrolled both in a mixed choir and either an all boy or all girl choir. A survey was constructed by the researcher to determine the attitudes of the participants toward singing and participation in choir. The 32 survey statements fell into one of four categories: perception of self as singer, attitude about gender in choir, others’ perception of self in choir, and attitude toward choir. Born in Hondarribia, in the Basque country of Spain on November 13, 1949, Javier Busto is one of the most recognized composers of that area. This research introduces the composer and his music. The document briefly presents events of his life that promoted his advancement as a composer, with particular attention to his composition "Missa pro Defunctis" (1997). The work was commissioned by the Kobe Chuo Chorus of Japan as a community response to an internationally recognized catastrophe, the terrible earthquake in Kobe, Japan on January 18, 1995. Modern Performance Trends In Bach's Sacred Music : Changing Tastes In The Performance Of Bach's Weihnachtsoratorium : An Exploration Of The Rhetorical Style, Sam Nester

This dissertation investigates changing tastes in the performance practice of Johann Sebastian Bach's sacred music from the second decade of the Twentieth Century to the present day. In particular I focus on the 'rhetorical style', and offer a comparative study of four recordings of Bach's Weihnachtsoratoritmt (Christmas Oratorio) BWV 248 by Harnoncourt (1973), Gardiner (1987), Jacobs (1997), and Suzuki (1998). Though all of these interpretations would be categorised as being in the 'rhetorical style', I attempt to show that within this classification there exists a multiplicity of performance approaches.
