This article discusses songs performed by musician Bob Dylan which were cover versions of songs by other performers as well as songs by Dylan which were heavily based on other songs. Songs discussed include "Blowin' in the Wind," which is based on the spiritual "No More Auction Block," "Blood in My Eyes" by the band Mississippi Sheiks and "When the Deal Goes Down," based on a radio theme song by musician Bing Crosby. Other topics include concerts by Dylan, music lyrics, and music performance.

Real Americans Mean Much More: Race, Ethnicity, And Authenticity In Belasco's Girl Of The Golden West And Puccini's La Fanciulla Del West, Linda B. Fairtile

Conceived by Belasco and filtered through Puccini, the characters in La fanciulla del West exhibit a diversity that is unusual even for an opera with an exotic setting: Mexicans, Australians, and European-Americans of various backgrounds reinvent themselves in a new land of seemingly endless possibilities, while the area's native inhabitants struggle to survive. California's multi-cultural population as understood by Belasco, by his Broadway audience, and by Puccini and his operatic audience create compound layers of difference that both focus and obscure the racial and ethnic hierarchies that played out in the 1840s and 50s. Preservice Elementary Classroom Teachers’ Attitudes Toward Music In The School Curriculum And Teaching Music, Christopher J. Della Pietra, Sara Bidner, Thomas A. Devaney

Research & Issues in Music Education

The purpose of this study was to determine the attitudes of preservice elementary education classroom teachers toward teaching music and the importance of music in the school curriculum as they prepare to enter the field in an era of high stakes testing, state standards, and accountability. More specifically, responses to twenty-nine statements were used to determine attitudes toward the following three constructs: (a) academic and social benefits of music education, (b) inclusion of music in the curriculum, and (c) comfort in teaching and leading music in the classroom. Adult Motivations In Community Orchestra Participation: A Pilot Case Study Of The Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra (New Jersey), Carol Shansky

Research & Issues in Music Education

The purpose of this study was to explore the motivations of adults in choosing to participate in community orchestras. This paper identifies many of those motivations and examines the reasons and implications of why the adults in the study chose to continue to play in community orchestras. The investigation was conducted in 2007 via a case study of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, a community orchestra located in Northern New Jersey. The adults selected for interview were members of the orchestra. Music sharing is one of the most controversial topics in copyright law. And mix tapes have been the classic, iconic form of music sharing for the last 30 years. Even in the face of technological development so rapid and far-reaching as to remove the literal “tape” from “mix tape,” there are nonetheless modern incarnations that crop up on a regular basis, from mix CDs to mix-sharing websites. Social norms permit and even encourage the creation of these modern mix tapes for such diverse reasons as wedding favors and birthday gifts.

Joanna Newsom’s 2004 album, The Milk-Eyed Mender, was released at a time when music blogs were reaching new levels of popularity within certain sections of music and online communities. During this time, songs from nearly every high profile indie rock release seemed to find their way onto music blogs (often, to the chagrin of the music industry, far before slated release dates). Newsom’s songs were no exception – she was often something of a hot topic on blogs like Stereogum, My Old Kentucky Blog, Brooklyn Vegan, Gorilla vs. Bear, and numerous others.
