The horn music of Paul Basler, while extremely popular and widely recognized, is relatively unexplored in academia. Basler’s experiences have led him all over the world from Wisconsin, Florida, and New York to Kenya and the Dominican Republic. Because of Basler’s variety of experiences, his music encompasses many styles and media. This document focuses on the life and influences of Paul Basler as a composer for the horn as the featured instrument. The methods by which great composers create their masterpieces often remain a mystery to modern scholars. There are essentially two approaches to determining what these methods might be: investigating a composer’s surviving drafts, sketches, and letters and analyzing their musical influences. The first approach can be very limiting, especially when applied to a composer such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who did not leave behind many musical sketches. Therefore, when studying Mozart’s compositional process, it is more useful to rely on the second method in which one traces his stylistic development to key musical figures. Theses and Dissertations

This thesis will investigate "The Sun Paints Rainbows on the Vast Waves" by David Bedford with consideration given to analysis of the work itself, historical perspectives, and educational conceptions. The work was commissioned by the Huddersfield Festival of Contemporary Music with additional financial assistance provided by the Hinrichsen foundation. Composed between June and August of 1982, this is the first piece by Bedford in the wind band medium. Part I of this written project is a short biographical sketch of the composer, Part II addresses influences on David Bedford's style while simultaneously elaborating on the historical significance of the musical …

“The kora is what they play in heaven” a friend once told me. I agreed with him, easily. Ever since I first heard the kora played in the United States, my interest in it and the culture that produced it has deepened. Being able to carry out research on it has been a blessing and a pleasure.
