Seth Daniels Bingham (1882-1972) holds a unique place within the pantheon of American composers. He was one of many composers to travel to France for lessons in composition during the first decades of the Twentieth Century. From 1906 until 1907 he studied organ with Alexander Guilmant and composition with Charles Marie Widor and Vincent d’Indy. Through his absorption of the French musical aesthetic, Bingham learned to improvise and compose in the French style, to voice textures according to a French system of registration, and to combine modernity with tradition. The purpose of this thesis is to examine Howard Hanson's composition, Dies Natalis for Band, from both an analytical and an educational perspective. To accomplish this objective, research on Hanson's personal and professional development as a composer, teacher, advocator, and otherwise contributor to the field of music was executed, information on and within Dies Natalis for Band was investigated, and suggestions were made for educational techniques to employ when teaching this composition. The author suggests that more analysis using Hanson's own theoretical system on intervallic relationships may yield additional information on his thought processes in composition. André Jolivet’s music is eclectic, and his compositional process is often enigmatic. Broadly speaking, Jolivet’s music falls into that category of twentieth-century repertoire described as post-tonal and pitch-centric.

This thesis will provide an analysis of Jolivet’s Concertino for Trumpet, String Orchestra, and Piano. It thus serves as a model of an analytic approach for post-tonal pitch-centric music of the twentieth century. My analytical method is based on the theories of Fred Lerdahl posited …

Classifications And Designations Of Metric Modulation In The Music Of Elliott Carter, Jason Adam Hobert

Since the first use of metric modulation in 1948, this technique has become a staple in Elliott Carter's rhythmic language and compositional process, being found in most of his compositions thereafter. Though most scholars share a general understanding of metric modulation, the different processes that achieve it and its functions are not documented. This thesis will compare and contrast some definitions of metric modulation, formulate a new definition, identify four different types of metric modulation, and explore four ways in which a metric modulation may function in a composition. This composition for Wind Ensemble (like Concert Band but usually only one player on a part) was Scott Master's Thesis for completing a Master of Music degree in Composition at Butler University. Written in 2010, the piece is a combination of styles, philosophies, and techniques, all in balance with each other. Avant-garde and traditional techniques are used; tonality and atonality vie with each other, resulting in a combination of the two; specific musical directions are balanced by a degree of choice available to each participant.

Influenced by the history and compositional techniques of shape note singing, the composition is a tribute to the past and current Sacred Harp singing conventions nationwide and the exuberance expressed within the shape note tradition. Environmental psychologists, like Robert Gifford who study transactions between individuals and their physical settings, maintain that as an individual's environment is changed, the environment also changes his/her behavior and experience.
