Behavioral Analysis Of Directors Of High-Performing Versus Low-Performing High School Bands, Mark Dwayne Waymire

This study investigated the relationship between student performance levels and teacher behaviors. Ten high school band directors were classified into one of two categories, directors of high-performing bands or directors of low-performing bands, based on audio recordings of concert band performances. Directors from the two categories were matched in terms of years of experience, educational background, and current teaching environment in an effort to delimit possible causal relationships between these factors and student performance outcomes. Each director was observed and videotaped over a three-day period, within two weeks preceding a music festival performance. Field notes were taken during each rehearsal …

The Instructional Planning And Rehearsal Practices Of Three Selected High School Band Directors, Renardo R. Murray

This study examined the rehearsal planning and practices of three selected high school band directors as they prepare their ensembles for performance. Three subjects were observed across five consecutive rehearsals for a total of approximately 641 minutes. Data was collected from structured interviews, videotape observations, field notes, analysis of instructional goals, and frequency and duration data collected on specified teacher and student behaviors. The observed rehearsal time was divided into rehearsal frames which are episodes of rehearsal time devoted to the correction of student performance. Repetition And Judgment Of Learning In Wind Instrument Practice, Laura A. Stambaugh

This study draws on two existing lines of research: blocked and random practice orders and judgment of learning. University wind and brass students practiced three short technical tasks in either a repetitive order or a random order during two practice sessions. Retention testing occurred 24 hours and 1 week after the second practice session. Performances were evaluated for accuracy, speed, and evenness. Woodwind players benefited from a random practice order. A secondary research question was drawn from judgment of learning research in motor learning and metacognition. Personal Therapy For Undergraduate Music Therapy Students: A Survey Of Amta Program Coordinators, Susan Gardstrom, Nancy A. Jackson

The primary purpose of this study was to gather information in order to understand if and how various modalities of personal therapy are employed with undergraduate music therapy students in the United States, AMTA degree program coordinators were asked about 3 therapy modalities, in particular: verbal therapy, music therapy, and expressive arts therapy (excluding music therapy).

It was predicted that less than a quarter of the respondents would indicate that personal therapy of any modality was required in their undergraduate curricula, but that a larger percentage would indicate that it was encouraged. Both hypotheses were supported, with just over 14% …

The purpose of this study was to explore the phenomena of feminist pedagogy as experienced by music therapy educators using phenomenological inquiry. This thesis examines live musicianship in terms of balancing audience expectations, perceptions of skill and the use of new technology in live performance with the aesthetic, artistic and sonic influences of the recording process.

Developments in recording studio technology and techniques, live sound reinforcement and approaches to performance are examined from audience and artist perspectives, as a means of evaluating the current role and future development of musicianship in popular music.

Complementing the research, a range of demonstrations will explore live performance by employing techniques and approaches to live musicianship discussed in the research.

Composer Rudy Davenport aims to create music that is more relatable than the atonal compositions often associated with 20th century composers. Inspired by his own Appalachian and Cherokee heritages, Davenport, in collaboration with librettist Delilah Elsen, developed his own musical genre called “Appalachian Romanticism”. This genre is evident in his work BYNA: Life Songs of a Southern Appalachian Woman of Cherokee Descent for Soprano, Piano, Oboe & Cello. In this paper, I will outline a method of composition that I believe has been highly under-used in jazz composition. I have studied the work of composers Ron Miller and Maria Schneider, and have used their concept of brighter to darker modes to further my modal exploration. The most popular étude books for oboe in use today are Ferling’s 48 Studies (1840) and Barret’s Complete Method for Oboe (1850). Many earlier and later collections exist, but most oboists only study from these two. This monograph uses four main criteria to choose sample études from various other collections and compile them into a single étude book. These criteria include: representation of major style periods; quotations from famous excerpts for oboe or difficult passages therefrom; illustration of mechanical improvements of the time and location; and alternatives to the standard canon in established pedagogy. Hip hop, specifically gangsta rap music, reflects a stereotypical black masculine aesthetic. The notion of a strong black male--irreverent, angry, defiant and many times violent--is pervasive in gangsta rap music. This badman trope, as characterized by Robin Kelley (1996), oftentimes encompasses hypermasculinity, misogyny, and homophobia. It should come as no surprise that this genre of rap music is rife with sexist themes and lyrics. Yet, what has not been fully explored are the progressive ways that male rappers express themselves towards others considered comrades or "homies." Prior research suggests the existence of a general divide between educators in the field and scholarly research writings; however, the extent to which this divide extends into writings associated with areas of philosophy and curricular construction has not been thoroughly investigated in the field of music education.
