Danielson & McGreal (2000) state that an effective teacher evaluation system must contain three elements: a) a coherent definition of the domain of teaching - "What," h) techniques for assessing all aspects of teaching-"How," and c) trained evaluators who can make consistent judgments about performance - "Who." In part one (which appeared in the previous issue of this journal) I examined some of the issues associated with these three areas. Undergraduate music programs at North American institutions of higher learning typically require music majors to complete successfully a core grouping of theory courses in order to fulfill degree requirements. These courses are considered foundational not only for further study of music theory, but for all areas of music specialization because they provide students with basic analytical and musicianship skills necessary to understand musical organization in the western tradition. Although specific curricular content may vary from one institution to another, the theory core usually includes the study of diatonic and chromatic harmony, form and analysis, aural skills and possibly instruction in …

This project will examine the ways in which the self-proclaimed Mongolian “folk rock” band, Altan Urag, combines elements of both traditional Mongolian and Western music and culture in order to recast and recreate Mongolian tradition. These new representations of Mongolian tradition occur within the context of a young and rapidly developing democratic nation which looks both deeply into its own past to construct a strong national sense of identity and looks increasingly outward to the international community with aspirations of establishing itself as a recognized and respected member of that community. I lived in the cities of Accra and Kumasi for a total of 30 days during the month of November, 2011. To achieve my research objectives, I used a combination of formal and informal interviews, participant observation, and non-participant observation. I interviewed 7 musicians and 1 professor/musician in Accra, as well as 1 musician, 1 CD shop owner, and 1 DJ in Kumasi, making a total of 11 interviews most of which I recorded. Fugue In A Minor, Ryan A. Stones

Student Publications

"Fugue in A Minor" was composed during the Fall 2011 section of "Counterpoint and Composition" offered at the Sunderman Conservatory of Music at Gettysburg College. The piece is composed in the style of J. S. Bach's fugues in his famous collection of solo keyboard music called The Well-Tempered Clavier. "Fugue in A Minor" is a four part fugue, featuring a traditional exposition, followed by a development section including sequences and fugue subject entries, and concluding with a recapitulation of the initial fugue material and a coda.

Flamenco performance – which scholars often describe in terms of the three dimensions of cante, or singing, baile, or dance, and toque, or instrumentation – is a complex synthesis of cultural influences across several centuries.
