Overview: On January 31, 2013 National Public Radio (NPR) reporter Leila Fadel broadcasted an interview with Omar Kamal, devout Salafi turned beat boxer in Cairo, Egypt. Kamal was a drug addict and a drummer who decided he wanted more out of his life and searched for fulfillment in Salafi Islam. The Salafist sect is a very traditional, strict and conservative form of Islam which, among other things, discourages its followers from playing music – especially the kind of angst-filled rock that Kamal was playing. Elementary Children’S Tonal Awareness As Related To Perception Of Tonal Dissonance, Charles E. Norris

This study investigated children’s tonal awareness by measuring their abilities to detect dissonance in major tonality using the author-created Tonal Dissonance Detection Test. A two-way analysis of variance of 312 elementary school subjects’ Tonal Dissonance Detection Test scores revealed that first- and second-graders’ dissonance detection abilities were significantly weaker than those of their third- to sixth-grade counterparts. Subsequent analysis revealed neither a significant gender effect nor interaction between grade level and gender. Findings are consistent with related study of the perception of tonality and tonal expectancies in children and adults. Given the homogeneity of the sample, the longevity of the …

A history of woman composers: The comprehensive history of music, revered as “The Grout,” fails to mention woman composers. Since 3000 B.C., over 6000 woman have composed alongside male colleagues; their work is largely neglected. There is a black hole of female composers. Despite praise and celebration during their lifetime, these women and their works are sucked out of history as though they never existed. The Relationship Between Collegiate Band Members’ Preferences Of Teacher Interpersonal Behavior And Perceived Self-Efficacy, Natalie Steele Royston

Research & Issues in Music Education

The purposes of this study were to describe collegiate band members’ preferred teacher interpersonal behaviors and perceptions of self-efficacy based on the gender, year in college, instrument, and major and to measure the relationship between preferences of interpersonal teacher behavior and self-efficacy scores. The sample (N = 1,020) was composed of band members at 12 universities from different regions of the United States. Participants completed the Teacher Interaction Preference Questionnaire (TIPQ) and the Self-Efficacy Questionnaire (SEQ). Descriptive statistics were calculated for each of the questionnaires. Results for the TIPQ showed that all sub-groups most preferred the dominant-cooperative behaviors, followed …

The rise of explicit rap music in the 1990's brought with it a challenge that has not been seen until today: what becomes of listeners who, once past their adolescent years, become responsible, successful adults yet choose to keep explicit rap music in their lives? This thesis examined that question to find that some high-achieving adults continue to listen to the controversial form of music, while simultaneously separating themselves from the images associated with the music. A Journey Over Land And Sea is a 15-minute composition for orchestra. It comprises two movements which contrast in form and musical language. Work consisted of composing, orchestrating, scoring, and preparing the piece for a performance by the Connecticut College Orchestra. Working with the orchestra at rehearsals required close collaboration with the conductor and provided opportunities to revise parts of the piece and make decisions about interpretation. A Journey Over Land And Sea was premiered at an honors thesis concert on 4/18/13 and performed again at the Connecticut College Orchestra spring concert on 5/2/13.
