Paper, titled “From Green to Blue: Cultural Identity in Irish and Bluegrass Fiddling,” written by Emily Potts for a folk studies class at Western Kentucky University. The paper compares Celtic fiddle music and Bluegrass music, identifying the similarities in the circumstances of their origin, style, and purpose. Lawrence University Assistant Professor of Music Michael Mizrahi ended the year in style. His album, “The Bright Motion”, was cited by both Time Out New York and Time Out Chicago on their annual list of best albums of 2012.
Released last May on New Amsterdam Records, “The Bright Motion” was listed eighth on Time Out New York’s 2012 list of the best opera and classical music of the past year, while Time Out Chicago included it on its year-end, non-numerical top-10 list of the year’s best opera and classical music albums.

Music And Movement Share A Dynamic Structure That Supports Universal Expressions Of Emotion, Beau Sievers, Larry Polansky, Michael Casey, Thalia Wheatley

Music moves us. Its kinetic power is the foundation of human behaviors as diverse as dance, romance, lullabies, and the military march. Despite its significance, the music-movement relationship is poorly understood. We present an empirical method for testing whether music and movement share a common structure that affords equivalent and universal emotional expressions. Our method uses a computer program that can generate matching examples of music and movement from a single set of features: rate, jitter (regularity of rate), direction, step size, and dissonance/visual spikiness. My Three Years In Prison: Teaching Music Behind Bars: An Autoethnography, Miranda Rowland

This study investigated my experience as a facilitator of musical activities at a men’s correctional facility in New Jersey. Over a period of three years, I served as the director of the men’s chorus at Albert C. Wagner Youth Correctional Facility in Bordentown, New Jersey. This study focused on my planning, repertoire selection, and rehearsal processes. Data were collected using self-created lesson plans, personal reflections and journal entries, and individual feedback from members of the choir. The results indicated that in order for me to be an effective teacher, I had to work with my students rather than working in …
