Vocal Technique And Repertoire Choice For Middle School Students, Taylor L. Simpson
Vocal Technique And Repertoire Choice For Middle School Students, Taylor L. Simpson
Senior Honors Theses
Discovering the correct vocal training techniques for middle school students is a difficult task for music teachers in regards to their changing voices and their new discoveries of interests and preferences. Adolescence marks the final phase in development to vocal maturity and thus, knowledge of how to cultivate an effective teaching style for middle school students is crucial. The following study will attempt to simplify the responsibilities of music teachers by focusing on the vocal development of adolescents, and recommending repertoire choices suitable for middle school students. The study will also analyze differences in gender, age, and ability levels. Ultimately, …

Binary Musical Bias In Irreguilar Meters, Akash Bhatia, Joseph Plazak, Faculty Advisor
Binary Musical Bias In Irreguilar Meters, Akash Bhatia, Joseph Plazak, Faculty Advisor
John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference
The rhythmic structures of Western art music tend to be highly regular. With regards to metrical organization (i.e. grouping of strong and weak beats), previous research by Huron (2006) indicates that binary (strong-weak) meters tend to be more prevalent than ternary (strong-weak-weak) meters. However, relatively little is known about other types of metrical organization, such as meters based on 5- or 7-beat patterns. Results are reported from a corpus study of 5- and 7-beat musical melodies. Five-beat metrical patterns were found to occur more frequently than meters with 7-beat patterns, χ2 (1, N = 144) = 30.25, p < 0.001, φ …

A Study Of The Musical Culture Of The Algonquin Indigenous Peoples Of North America, Corbin Clark
A Study Of The Musical Culture Of The Algonquin Indigenous Peoples Of North America, Corbin Clark
Senior Honors Theses
The study of the music of the indigenous peoples of North America has been a topic of research since the late nineteenth century. These studies have mainly focused on the American Indians that lived west of the Mississippi. The Native American groups that lived on the eastern border of North America, known as the Eastern Woodland American Indians, have received much less attention than these other groups. This project focuses on one of the groups associated with the Eastern Woodland tribes, the Algonquins. The purpose of this study is to research their musical culture by focusing on the musical instruments …
