African Drumming: An Examination Of Drumming In Ghana, Its Intentions, And Application In Music Therapy Practice, Marti Bowles May 2013

African Drumming: An Examination Of Drumming In Ghana, Its Intentions, And Application In Music Therapy Practice, Marti Bowles

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Drumming is a phenomenon that is found in many cultures throughout the world. Although each culture has a different use and intention in which drumming is incorporated, there are many common elements that overlap between the various groups. Because of the versatility of drumming, it is widely used as a therapeutic intervention in music therapy. Understanding the uses and intentions of drumming in other cultures can help music therapists to broaden their understanding of drumming. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the value of African drumming and to see how it relates to the use and intent of …

Finding Meaning In The Two-Finger Banjo Style., Jeffrey K. Elkins May 2013

Finding Meaning In The Two-Finger Banjo Style., Jeffrey K. Elkins

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The two-finger banjo style languishes as a small footnote in the lexicon of old time banjo music—very important to a passionate (and lucky!) few, but not known by too many others. This research is a starting point to understanding the meaning of two-finger banjo; through a review of primary literature, interviews, witnessing performances, and individual investigation of playing two-finger banjo, I have been able to document some understandings about the style.

These understandings informed further appreciation of old time music, the old time music (and banjo) communities, and the art of making music in this way—while describing the journey, I …

Sing Solo Pirate: Songs In The Key Of Arrr! A Literature Guide For The Singer And Vocal Pedagogue, Michael S. Tully May 2013

Sing Solo Pirate: Songs In The Key Of Arrr! A Literature Guide For The Singer And Vocal Pedagogue, Michael S. Tully

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances

Pirates have always been mysterious figures. They came out of nowhere, attacked their victims, plundered their goods, and vanished. Reason tells us that pirates were no more than common criminals, but over the centuries, history has come to portray them as romantic and even heroic figures. This stereotype of piracy has long been a fascination of authors, poets, and composers, and it is evident in our cultural landscape.

This document examines an area of pirate literature that has been neglected, if ever discussed: the published pirate song for solo voice and piano accompaniment. Over the past two centuries many such …

The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame: Welcome To The Zoo, Sarah Zegree May 2013

The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame: Welcome To The Zoo, Sarah Zegree

Honors Theses

I have been working as the 5th-8th Grade music teacher at the Gagie School in Kalamazoo, MI for the entire 2012-2013 year. This mucis program represents not only the culminating project of my work at Gagie, but also a representation of all the skills I have acquired in my years at WMU in the hopes of using them in a variety of possible future careers.

I got the idea for this program from my students. In wanting to make sure they had a say in what music we performed I asked them what their favorite songs were. The overwhelming answers …

A History Of Musique Concrete And Ulysses, Thomas Elijah-William Rastall

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis paper examines the compositional techniques used in the construction of my capstone project for a Masters in Music Composition from the University of Arkansas. A history of musique concrete is included to place perspective on my work and to discuss techniques and philosophical approaches to concrete music. This history examines the work by the Futurists, Pierre Schaeffer, Karlheintz Stockhausen, and Edgard Varése among others. The technological history includes significant developments in audio recording but does not discuss the development of electronic instruments. A philosophical perspective of music and noise is included to validate the techniques and materials used …

Fight Or Flight, Asher Griffith May 2013

Fight Or Flight, Asher Griffith

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Fight or Flight is a one-act, science-fiction opera. Outwardly the story of an astronaut who is marooned on the Moon, this dark comedy is an allegorical tale of forced isolation and loss; and of the anxiety and sadness that inevitably result. Musically, this piece began as an experiment in the reverse-engineering of mostly improvisatory methods of musical spoken-word delivery such as rap or slam poetry; this compositional device being a means to the more important end of creating a live musical theatre lacking the flippant sparkle commonly associated with Broadway and the like, but also free of the "intellectual" or …
