Max Steiner And The Music Of Casablanca, Coralin Davelaar May 2013

Max Steiner And The Music Of Casablanca, Coralin Davelaar

The Hilltop Review

Not only did Max Steiner not like the song, he thought that it was not appropriate for the film. Nevertheless, as every film buff knows, ―As Time Goes By‖ stayed in the film Casablanca, and the song has almost become emblematic of the film itself. However, it is but one song in a very musical film that proved challenging for veteran film composer Max Steiner. It was not the amount of material that he had to compose (as with Gone with the Wind), but rather the music that was already built into the drama that he had to incorporate into …

"Listen To The Wild Discord": Jazz In The Chicago Defender And The Louisiana Weekly, 1925-1929, Sarah A. Waits

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This essay will use the views of two African American newspaper columnists, E. Belfield Spriggins of the Louisiana Weekly and Dave Peyton of the Chicago Defender, to argue that though New Orleans and Chicago both occupied a primary place in the history of jazz, in many ways jazz was initially met with ambivalence and suspicion. The struggle between the desire to highlight black achievement in music and the effort to adhere to tenets of middle class respectability play out in their columns. Despite historiographical writings to the contrary, these issues of the influence of jazz music on society were …

An Exploration Of Modes In Polyphonic Compositions Of The Sixteenth Century, Marcella Marie Columbus May 2013

An Exploration Of Modes In Polyphonic Compositions Of The Sixteenth Century, Marcella Marie Columbus

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Modes in the Renaissance era were vital to understand the inner workings of a piece. Modal theory implies every Renaissance composition should have a distinct mode in which it belongs. The mode of any piece from this era is theoretically obvious by the first or last note of the piece as well as the range given, but researchers have argued the validity of this claim. Complications arise in the case of pieces with two or more voices. Polyphonic music causes uncertainty regarding the method of identifying the mode of a piece. This paper will look deeply at the Missa Papae …

The Marriage Of Figaro As Presented By Beaumarchais, Da Ponte, And Mozart: An Expression Of Shifting Class Structure, Kelly Cassady May 2013

The Marriage Of Figaro As Presented By Beaumarchais, Da Ponte, And Mozart: An Expression Of Shifting Class Structure, Kelly Cassady

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

The social structure at the close of the 18th century was a picture of instability and change, as Europe watched the unfolding of the American Revolution, Napoleon redrew the map, and the Enlightenment swept across the face of the earth, bringing with it new political and social ideas relating to equality and the unfairness of the aristocratic class and government structure throughout Europe. This new awareness was expressed intellectually and passionately in the work of the artists, musicians, and writers of the time, as is demonstrated clearly in Pierre Augustin de Beaumarchais's radical play, "The Marriage of Figaro." The Enlightened …

The Carols Of The Ritson Manuscript, Bl Add. 5665, At Exeter Cathedral: Repertory And Context, Anastasia S. Pilato May 2013

The Carols Of The Ritson Manuscript, Bl Add. 5665, At Exeter Cathedral: Repertory And Context, Anastasia S. Pilato

Honors Scholar Theses

The fifteenth century saw the development of a substantial body of English songs known as carols, characterized by a strophe (multiple stanzas of text set to the same music) and refrain. While late medieval carols enjoyed great popularity, the occasions for their performance remain obscure. Carols on both sacred and secular themes abound, written in Latin, vernacular languages, or a mixture of both. Partially as a result of this fluidity, scholars have proposed widely varying theories about the origins and use of these pieces.

This thesis approaches the question of performance contexts for carols of the late Middle Ages through …
