The Culture And Music Of American Cabaret, Katherine Anne Yachinich
The Culture And Music Of American Cabaret, Katherine Anne Yachinich
Music Honors Theses
American cabaret was the last great extension of a celebrated movement that began in the cafes of Paris and Berlin. It adapted an interpretive performance tradition that reflected the reaction of an artistic intelligentsia to European political and social realities into a variant that was expressive of the vibrancy of newly emerging jazz styles, the optimistic energy of Northern U. S. urban centers, and the uniquely American ways in which its society negotiated issues of social mores and race.

A Three-Part Study In The Connections Between Music And Mathematics, Molly Elizabeth Anderson
A Three-Part Study In The Connections Between Music And Mathematics, Molly Elizabeth Anderson
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
The idea for this thesis originated from my fascination with the studies of both music and mathematics throughout my entire life. As a triple major in Middle/Secondary Math Education, Mathematics, and Music, I have learned more than I thought possible of music and math. In proposing this thesis, I desired to use my knowledge of arithmetic and aesthetics to research how music and mathematics are intertwined. I am confident that the following three chapters have allowed me to develop as an academic in both music and mathematics. This thesis serves as a presentation of the connections of music and math …
Yalom's Group Psychotherapy Work And Its Implication For Group Music Therapy Practice, Amanda Pelletier
Yalom's Group Psychotherapy Work And Its Implication For Group Music Therapy Practice, Amanda Pelletier
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Irvin D. Yalom discusses eleven therapeutic factors which are present in group psychotherapy: Instillation of hope, universality, imparting information, altruism, the corrective recapitulation of the primary family group, development of socializing techniques, imitative behaviors, interpersonal learning, group cohesiveness, catharsis, and existential factors. More recent work related to the topic of factors in group psychotherapy (Joyce, MacNair-Semands, Tasca, & Ogrodniczuk, 2011) suggests that there are four global therapeutic factors in group psychotherapy: instillation of hope, secure emotional expression, awareness of relational impact, and social learning. Joyce et al. (2011) created a Likert-type self-measurement scale to measure the presence or absence of …

Bat Boy: The Musical, Sarah Carlson Cassell
Bat Boy: The Musical, Sarah Carlson Cassell
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
When I began the process of producing my Capstone Project, Bat Boy: the Musical, I had no idea what I was about to do or how much work it was going to be. I ultimately learned that the key tools I needed were passion, confidence, and creativity.
I originally had a very difficult time deciding what show I wanted to do. I changed my mind several times between other shows, but once I landed on Bat Boy I never second-guessed my choice. I found a show I was passionate about, and subsequently poured myself into every second I spent …
Musicianmaker An App For Teaching Musicality To Beginners, Jamie Yavorsky
Musicianmaker An App For Teaching Musicality To Beginners, Jamie Yavorsky
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
The purpose of this paper is to support and defend my senior capstone project, which takes the form of an educational app for iPad called MusicianMaker. The paper is split into two main sections: a rationale for the necessity of the app, and a justification for the educational benefits it provides. Over the course of my undergraduate career I have studied available resources for music education and found a disappointing majority that make no attempt to teach musicality. Teachers and scholars debate that music learning is either absolute or relativistic, but regardless of their opinion I have found no pedagogy …

Aspects Of The High School Music Program And Their Relationship With The College Marching Band Experience, Glen J. Ullman
Aspects Of The High School Music Program And Their Relationship With The College Marching Band Experience, Glen J. Ullman
Honors Scholar Theses
A quality musical ensemble requires the director to be attentive to the needs and abilities of its members. This study examined various aspects of students’ musical and academic preparation in relation to their current experience with music in college. With more insight about the backgrounds of college musicians, and the way those backgrounds relate to their experiences in performing ensembles, music directors will be better able to tailor instruction to the needs of their musicians. For this study, a survey was distributed to members of the University of Connecticut Marching Band about their demographics, education, past musical experiences, and current …
The Preservation Of Subjectivity Through Form: The Radical Restructuring Of Disintegrated Material In The Music Of Gerald Barry, Kevin Volans And Raymond Deane., Adrian Smith
Doctoral
This thesis examines Adorno’s concept of ‘disintegrated musical material’ and applies it to the work of the Irish composers Raymond Deane (b. 1953), Gerald Barry (b. 1952) and Kevin Volans (b. 1949). Although all three of these composers have expressed firm commitments to the ideal of creating new and radical works, much of the material in their music is composed of elements abstracted from the tonal past. This feature of their work would seem contrary to the views of Adorno, who is commonly seen as advocating progressive composition using only the most advanced means. This view comes across most strongly …
A Realization And Analysis : The Manifestation Of Franz Schubert Within Manuel Maria Ponce's Sonata Romantica., Parker S. Scinta
A Realization And Analysis : The Manifestation Of Franz Schubert Within Manuel Maria Ponce's Sonata Romantica., Parker S. Scinta
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Within early twentieth-century guitar repertoire, Manuel María Ponce’s Sonata Romántica distinguishes itself in both quality and historical significance. The manifestation of Franz Schubert’s compositional idioms within this work exhibits Ponce’s intense understanding of Romantic harmonic and formal treatment, in addition to his imitative compositional ability. The main aim of this document is to discover the specific ways in which Ponce emulates Schubert by incorporating comparative and Schenkerian analyses. This investigation examines Ponce’s treatment of harmonic, motivic and formal structures to reveal the unique aesthetic qualities that distinguish the piece as a guitar sonata in the manner of Schubert. In particular, …
Tracing The Development Of Vivaldi's "L' Estro Armonico" Concerto No. 8 In A Minor Through J.S. Bach And Samuil Feinberg's Keyboard Transcriptions: Exploring The Possibilities Of A Modern Authentic Performance, Andreas Xenopoulos
Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances
This document explores the development of the Concerto No.8 in A minor from the collection L’Estro Armonico by Antonio Vivaldi (1678–1741) through the transcriptions by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750) and Samuil Feinberg (1890–1962). Feinberg was a Russian and Soviet pianist, composer and piano pedagogue, highly influenced by the teaching of Franz Liszt and the principles of the new, modern ‘piano school’ during the end of the 19th century. Biographical information about Samuil Feinberg along with the influences Franz Liszt had upon piano education in Russia and the Moscow conservatory in particular is offered. Two comprehensive comparisons between the two …

A Musical Mirror: Spain's Ever-Changing Political Landscape And Its Reflection In Popular Music, Vera Grek '14
College Honors Program
This thesis examines the governmental changes in Spain from the beginning of Francisco Franco’s dictatorship in 1936 until the end of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero’s first term as Prime Minister in 2008 in order to determine the degree to which politics affects cultural change in Spain, focusing on popular music. The first chapter deals with Franco’s regime and the laws that controlled the country and the adoption of the southern Spanish traditions as the official Spanish culture, repressing the individual characteristics of the other regions. Next, the second chapter compares the transition from dictatorship to democracy aided by King Juan …

A Conducting Student's Guide To The Solving And Execution Of Major Gestural Issues In Beethoven's First Eight Symphonies, Nathanael Thomas Lambert
Dissertations
This work is a reference guide for the solving of major conducting gestural issues in Beethoven’s first eight symphonies. The most common major gestural issues encountered in conducting Beethoven’s symphonies include tempo modulations, fermati, hypermetric conducting, and cueing in rapid succession. The methods and criteria used for solving each of these issues are addressed in separate chapters devoted to each of these major gestural issues. A following chapter is devoted to the solving of less complicated issues including starting movements, gradual tempo changes, nonmodulatory sudden tempo changes, and showing dynamics and sforzandi.
Each symphony is given its own chapter where …
The Application Of Contemporary Double Bass Left Hand Techniques Applied In The Orchestra Repertoire, Eric Hilgenstieler
The Application Of Contemporary Double Bass Left Hand Techniques Applied In The Orchestra Repertoire, Eric Hilgenstieler
Dissertations
The uses of contemporary left hand techniques are related to solo playing in many ways. In fact, most of these techniques were arguably developed for this kind of repertoire. Generally the original solo repertoire is idiomatic for the double bass. The same cannot be said for the orchestral repertoire, which presents many technical problems too difficult to solve using the traditional technique. Historically, the double bass passed through several transformations in its shape, structure, and tuning system. Only in the late 19th century did the instrument begin to have its own standard pedagogy and experiments with the tuning system diminished. …

Chopin Mazurkas And Its Influence On Polish Nationalsim, Pablo Cintron
Masters Theses
The innovative character of Chopin Mazurkas is forever linked with Polish culture. This thesis examines how the unmistakable sound of the Mazurka captures the Polish sound more than any other work written by the composer and how it contributes to Polish cultural nationalism during the Polish diaspora of the nineteenth-century.
In this study, the author presents a brief examination on Chopin's traditional interpretation of his mazurkas as well as isolating the characteristics of Polish interpretation that sets the Mazurka performance apart from the non-traditional style. A research case is made when contrasting the current concept of the classical execution of …

"A Song Workers Everywhere Sing:" Zilphia Horton And The Creation Of Labor's Musical Canon, Chelsea Hodge
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Zilphia Horton, a college educated, middle class white woman from the rural American south, created the canon of music that would become central to the black freedom struggle in postwar America. Horton's work in the post-New Deal labor movement established the methods of incorporating protest music in movements of social justice that prevailed for the rest of the century. The work songs and hymns that she collected, arranged, notated, and published while music director at Highlander Folk School in Monteagle, TN--including "We Shall Overcome," "This Little Light of Mine," "We Shall Not Be Moved"--motivated generations of activists as they transformed …

Sicilian Instrumental Music During The Ottocento: A Rediscovery Of Forgotten Repertoire For Piano, Alison C. Snow
Sicilian Instrumental Music During The Ottocento: A Rediscovery Of Forgotten Repertoire For Piano, Alison C. Snow
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
During the Italian Ottocento, purely instrumental genres were overshadowed by opera and, as a result, have been largely forgotten today both within and without Italy. This project will explore this lacuna through a case study drawn from the piano music of three Sicilian composers: Ga spare Tamburello, Giuseppe Perrotta and Gaetano lmpallomeni. By evaluating how their music embodies Ottocento culture, as well as its abstract musical content, performers will show that this neglected repertoire is worthy of repeated contemporary revival. To accomplish this, I will be collaborating with professional Italian musicians Davide Macaluso and Marco Zafarana to prepare and …
The Percussion Music Of Donald Martino, Glenn Webb
The Percussion Music Of Donald Martino, Glenn Webb
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Donald Martino (1931-2005) made important contributions to the percussion repertoire with his chamber music and solo percussion pieces spanning from the 1950s to his last compositions written just before his death in 2005. Many of his chamber music pieces include percussion, and are some of the most significant contributions to the contemporary chamber medium of the last half of the twentieth century. The compositions often include performance techniques that require additional instruction, or demonstration. Some of his chamber works such as Notturno and From the Other Side include several pages of notes, explanations, and instructions detailing notational devices such as …
