Basic Fundamentals Of Phenomenology Of Music By Sergiu Celibidache As Criteria For The Orchestral Conductor, Lucia Marin

Theses and Dissertations--Music

The phenomenology of music is the science of studying sounds and their relationship with human beings. Conceived by the Romanian orchestra conductor Sergiu Celibidache, phenomenology of music has become a valuable source of knowledge for the orchestral conductor, offering tools that can lead to a deeper understanding of the score. In this paper I will offer an explanation of phenomenological method, applied to conducting based on my own experience, and an explanation of the basic ideas of “Celibidache’s Phenomenology of Music.”

The Effects Of Music Therapy And Its Impact On Sound Levels In The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Sarah L. Timmons

Theses and Dissertations--Music

Sound levels in the neonatal intensive care unit often exceed the recommended level of 45 dBA. Various sounds contribute to the extraneous noise that envelops this fragile environment. Increase in noise and high levels of sound can be detrimental to the health of premature infants, which can cause both short and long-term developmental delays and negative physiologic responses. Music therapy interventions in the NICU have addressed numerous needs of this population, with a positive effect on development, physiologic responses, and hospital stay. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of music therapy on decreasing the sound levels …

Creative Treatment Of Folk Melodies In Selected Cirandinhas And Cirandas Of Heitor Villa-Lobos, Eldia Carla Farias Jan 2015

Creative Treatment Of Folk Melodies In Selected Cirandinhas And Cirandas Of Heitor Villa-Lobos, Eldia Carla Farias

Theses and Dissertations--Music

This study provides a comparative analysis and performance suggestions for three Cirandinhas and three Cirandas for solo piano by Heitor Villa-Lobos in order to demonstrate their aesthetic and pedagogical value. The primary objective is to argue for the significance of the Cirandas as concert works and of the Cirandinhas as didactic ones. To better explore these two sets of pieces and their interconnections, the selected Ciranda-Cirandinhas pairs are all based on the same folksong theme. Thus, the analyses also demonstrate Villa-Lobos’s desire to represent Brazilian culture through his music and the ingenuity with which he treated the same melodic material …

Adapting Traditional Kentucky Thumbpicking Repertoire For The Classical Guitar, Andrew Rhinehart

Theses and Dissertations--Music

During the first half of the twentieth century, a unique style of guitar playing known as Kentucky thumbpicking was developed by a handful of musicians in the western coal field region of Kentucky. This guitar tradition was elevated to national prominence by country guitar virtuoso Merle Travis. Subsequently, this style became characterized as "Travis Picking."

Kentucky thumbpicking incorporates a steady and muted bass line that alternates between the root, fifth or third of a chord. The bass is also accentuated with the use of a thumbpick worn on the right hand. Simultaneously, the index, occasionally middle and ring fingers, play …

Performance Practice Of Brass Band Music Of The American Civil War: A Perspective From Saxton's Cornet Band, Joel M. Crawford Jan 2015

Performance Practice Of Brass Band Music Of The American Civil War: A Perspective From Saxton's Cornet Band, Joel M. Crawford

Theses and Dissertations--Music

This project examines source materials, methods, and instruments required for creating an informed period performance of military brass band music from the American Civil War. The rapid development of brass bands in America combined with the volatility of the war meant that much of the development of these styles were not formally documented. To compound this problem an instrumentalist trained on modern instruments who plays on an instrument from the period will produce a sound highly colored and influenced by their sound concept on a modern instrument. Experience with the instrument and attention to their idiosyncrasies will offer the closest …

Overcoming Initial Hurdles: Strategies For Developing A University Free Improvisation Ensemble, Rui Li Jan 2015

Overcoming Initial Hurdles: Strategies For Developing A University Free Improvisation Ensemble, Rui Li

Theses and Dissertations--Music

New free improvisers may come across six major problems as they learn to improvise: imbalance between technique and music, incorrect perception of limitation, imbalance between rationality and emotion, lack of enthusiasm, inability to view criticism as a source of creativity, and misunderstanding of mistakes and risks. In this thesis, I propose a set of effective pedagogical tools as possible solutions for students and groups interested in exploring the beauty of free improvisation.

An Exploration Of The French And American Schools Of Classical Saxophone, Sarah E. Miracle

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

This project is an exploration of the relatively short history of the classical saxophone genre. It will focus mainly on the styles created by Marcel Mule, the second professor of saxophone at the Paris Conservatory, and Larry Teal, the first full-time professor of saxophone in America. Mule and Teal’s contrasting ideas of playing and teaching created distinct French and American schools of classical saxophone playing. This project explores the similarities and differences between these two schools of thought, and places them each in historical and cultural contexts. In addition, it traces the subsequent lineage of prominent saxophone performers and pedagogues, …

The Music And Flute Of Joaquim Antonio Callado A Study Of Selected Compositions, Denis Almeida Dos Santos Jan 2015

The Music And Flute Of Joaquim Antonio Callado A Study Of Selected Compositions, Denis Almeida Dos Santos

Theses and Dissertations--Music

The purpose of this dissertation is to provide a survey of eight selected compositions for flute by the nineteenth-century Brazilian composer and flutist, Joaquim Antonio Callado (1848-1880). The aim of the survey is to identify early structural, melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic elements of the popular Brazilian instrumental genre, called choro, in Callado’s compositions. In addition, this study will investigate the hypothesis of Callado’s use of two different flute models to compose and perform: a nineteenth-century, simple-system, five-keyed wooden flute and the, then, newly invented silver, multi-keyed, Boehm flute. The study will also look for evidence of Callado’s use of …

ABSTRACT

Campbell, Loree V., M.A., December, 2014

Exploring Latin Rhythms (50 pp.)

Director: Karen Kaufmann (Theatre and Dance) K. Kaufmann

Exploring Latin Rhythms was a project that I undertook with the intention of broadening my base of cultural knowledge, enhancing my musical skills in piano performance and composition, and rhythm instrument familiarization and proficiency. I was able to bring Latin percussion into my classroom for both cultural exploration and as a means of learning language. In this year long journey, I experienced two very different teaching styles from two different mentors, attended the World Rhythm Festival in Seattle, and greatly …

The Social And Cultural Changes That Affected The Music Of Motown Records From 1959-1972, Lindsey Baker Jan 2015

The Social And Cultural Changes That Affected The Music Of Motown Records From 1959-1972, Lindsey Baker

Theses and Dissertations

Motown Records produced many of the greatest musicians from the 1960s and the 1970s. During this time, songs like "Dancing in the Street" and "What's Going On?" targeted social issues in America and created a voice for African-American people through their messages. Events like the Mississippi Freedom Summer and Bloody Thursday inspired the artists at Motown to create these songs. Influenced by the cultural and social circumstances of the Civil Rights Movement, the musical output of Motown Records between 1959 and 1972 evolved from a sole focus on entertainment in popular culture to a focus on motivating social change through …

Understanding And Implementing Extended Saxophone Techniques, Tyler R. Bokman Jan 2015

Understanding And Implementing Extended Saxophone Techniques, Tyler R. Bokman

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Contemporary classical music often pushes the boundaries of how instruments should be played and what kinds of sounds they should produce. A great deal of contemporary music requires the player to utilize playing techniques that may seem very strange and difficult to those who are unfamiliar with them. These unusual practices, known as extended techniques, can include playing in extreme ranges, manipulating pitches in particular ways, and applying abnormal articulations. While once seen as a sort of novelty, these extended techniques are becoming increasingly essential to the contemporary musician. This is especially true of the saxophonist.

While nearly every other …

The Historical Impact Of Philosophical Naturalism On American Aesthetic Education: Bennett Reimer’S Philosophy Of Music Education As Aesthetic Education, Jeremy Edwin Scarbrough Jan 2015

The Historical Impact Of Philosophical Naturalism On American Aesthetic Education: Bennett Reimer’S Philosophy Of Music Education As Aesthetic Education, Jeremy Edwin Scarbrough

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Philosophical naturalism is the view that all of reality reduces to natural explanation. The resulting so-called fact-value split biases language against universal, objective values—where empirical observation is said to determine truth, while values are reduced to private emoting or socio-cultural human construction. This research questioned the definition of aesthetic value as determined by the music education as aesthetic education (MEAE) movement in the United States, and the justification of aesthetic education as a universally applicable and comprehensive approach to a course in general music/music appreciation. As the MEAE movement seems to have been largely defined by Bennett Reimer, his philosophy …

Opera Education In The Upper Elementary Music Classroom, Carmen Louise Taylor Jan 2015

Opera Education In The Upper Elementary Music Classroom, Carmen Louise Taylor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Adults are increasingly becoming uninvolved with the arts and it is therefore important to cultivate a new audience, beginning with a well-rounded musical education for elementary-age children. Opera can easily be implemented as a part of a well-rounded musical education and can be taught in conjunction with multiple subjects. Anecdotal evidence suggests that children are exposed to negative stereotypes about opera without receiving proper education on the subject and are thus more likely to not be interested in opera as they grow older. A short survey was sent to fourth and fifth grade music teachers around the state of Mississippi …
