The Decibel Scoreplayer - A Digital Tool For Reading Graphic Notation, Cat Hope, Lindsay R. Vickery Dr Jan 2015

The Decibel Scoreplayer - A Digital Tool For Reading Graphic Notation, Cat Hope, Lindsay R. Vickery Dr

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

In 2009, the Decibel new music ensemble based in Perth, Western Australia was formed with an associated manifesto that stated “Decibel seek to dissolve any division between sound art, installation and music by focusing on the combination of acoustic and electronic instruments” [1]. The journey provided by this focus led to a range of investigations into different score types, resulting in a re-writing of the groups statement to “pioneering electronic score formats, incorporating mobile score formats and networked coordination performance environments” [2]. This paper outlines the development of Decibel’s work with the ‘screen score’, including the different stages of the …

Suggestions For Transgender Inclusion In Classical Music: A Mini-Cycle, Xavia A. Publius Jan 2015

Suggestions For Transgender Inclusion In Classical Music: A Mini-Cycle, Xavia A. Publius

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This interdisciplinary text examines the lack of transgender inclusion in Western classical music, especially through the lens of opera. By looking at the dearth of transgender characters, singers, and composers, as well as the author’s personal experiences as a transgender singer in classical spaces, this project develops a strong position on ways that Western classical music should work to incorporate transgender voices, both literally and figuratively.

Some of these methods are modeled in this thesis, such as consultations with other transgender artists, transgeneric devising, and trans-centric composing. The author worked with local transgender singers to understand their views on opera, …

Similar But Different: An Analysis Of Differences In Clarinet And Saxophone Pedagogy And Doubler’S Misconceptions, Nicholas Jeremy Carlo Jan 2015

Similar But Different: An Analysis Of Differences In Clarinet And Saxophone Pedagogy And Doubler’S Misconceptions, Nicholas Jeremy Carlo

Honors Program Theses

Doubling, or the ability to play one or more secondary instruments, is an extremely important skill for the professional woodwind player to have. For a saxophonist, the ability to play clarinet can sometimes make the difference between winning an audition or not. On a more basic level, many clarinetists learn to play saxophone so they can participate in the school jazz band, while many saxophonists learn to play clarinet both as a double in jazz band or as a new challenge in the concert band setting. Many times a student will pick up an instrument and attempt to figure it …

Work Made For Hire – Analyzing The Multifactor Balancing Test, Ryan G. Vacca Jan 2015

Work Made For Hire – Analyzing The Multifactor Balancing Test, Ryan G. Vacca

Akron Law Faculty Publications

Authorship, and hence, initial ownership of copyrighted works is oftentimes controlled by the 1976 Copyright Act’s work made for hire doctrine. This doctrine states that works created by employees within the scope of their employment result in the employer owning the copyright. One key determination in this analysis is whether the hired party is an employee or independent contractor. In 1989, the U.S. Supreme Court, in CCNV v. Reid, answered the question of how employees are distinguished from independent contractors by setting forth a list of factors courts should consider. Unfortunately, the Supreme Court did not give further guidance on …

Numuzart: An Original, Multi-Sensory, Creative Experience, Tori Christine Ovel Jan 2015

Numuzart: An Original, Multi-Sensory, Creative Experience, Tori Christine Ovel

Honors Program Theses

NuMuzArt grew from a small seed planted in my brain over the summer of 2014, when I attended a few summer composition programs to experience and learn more about my compositional craft. While at the Charlotte Music Festival, I participated in a conversation about the sterile nature of music recitals in the academic and concert music world. This conversation stuck with me and became a no-brainer subject for my honors thesis. I would research the concert music world and construct an alternative which would solve a few of my personal vendettas against the standard recital format, while retaining a “serious …

The American Symphony Orchestra: Factors Affecting Concert Attendance And Predictions For The Millennial Ticketholder, Hayley Graham

Honors Program Theses

This research investigates the perception of live orchestral music performances among members of the American millennial generation, born between 1985 and 1997. Specifically, it describes the most common factors and trends affecting attendance decisions, looking at aspects such as past musical experience, marketing strategies used, and accessibility of performances. Current programming, marketing, and educational trends in several orchestras are also considered. Information for this study was gathered from a survey of University of Northern Iowa students, as well as from case studies of orchestras. This thesis provides predictions and recommendations for how to best reach this demographic as orchestras move …

Self-Expression Through The String Quartet: An Analysis Of Shostakovich's String Quartets No. 1, No. 8, And No. 15, Ariane C. Gushue Jan 2015

Self-Expression Through The String Quartet: An Analysis Of Shostakovich's String Quartets No. 1, No. 8, And No. 15, Ariane C. Gushue

Scripps Senior Theses

As a little boy, Dmitriĭ Dmitrievich Shostakovich pressed his ear against the wall to hear his neighbors play chamber music. He matured into one of the most prominent Soviet era composers. While the majority of academic interest Shostakovich centers on his symphonic works, his string quartets provide a window into a more intimate facet of Shostakovich’s life. This thesis explores first, why Shostakovich turned to the string quartet after some of the most fearful years of his life: his demise and rise after the scathing Pravda letter that all but threatened his life. Second, this thesis analyzes three of Shostakovich’s …

Bratya, A Symphonic Poem, Tamyka Rochelle Jordon Jan 2015

Bratya, A Symphonic Poem, Tamyka Rochelle Jordon

LSU Master's Theses

Bratya, ‘brothers’ in Russian, is a tone poem inspired by characters in Dostoevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov. The novel is long, complex, and largely considered the author’s magnum opus. I focus on each brother: Dmitri, Ivan, Smerdyakov, and Alexei. Each movement attempts to capture the essence and personality of each brother. The first movement “Mitya”, a nickname for the eldest brother Dmitri, attempts to personify the character’s stormy, passionate nature. His strained relationship with his father, obsession with the siren-like Grushenka, and his general inability to control his emotions are largely to blame for Dmitri’s imprisonment. Specific traits and episodes that …

The Adventurous Monk: A Discussion Of Eric Reed’S Improvisational Techniques And The Influence Of Thelonious Monk, Vaughn Beaver Jan 2015

The Adventurous Monk: A Discussion Of Eric Reed’S Improvisational Techniques And The Influence Of Thelonious Monk, Vaughn Beaver

Theses : Honours

This dissertation examines the improvisational style of notable jazz pianist Eric Reed, focusing on select performances from the album The Adventurous Monk. As is common for contemporary artists, Reed has not yet been the focus of academic study, despite the fact that his vast experience – particularly with jazz luminaries such as Wynton Marsalis – warranted such investigation. The endeavour of this research was to discuss the observable influence of Thelonious Monk on Reed’s improvisational style through musical transcription and comparative analysis of the two pianists’ solos on the Monk compositions ‘Work’ and ‘Nutty’. Complete Monk transcriptions were initially analysed …

A Stylistic Analysis Of Recess Performed By Charlie Hunter From The Dvd Right Now Live, Joshua De Silva Jan 2015

A Stylistic Analysis Of Recess Performed By Charlie Hunter From The Dvd Right Now Live, Joshua De Silva

Theses : Honours

Charlie Hunter is a guitarist who has gained international recognition for his ability to perform guitar parts and bass lines simultaneously on his hybrid guitar. His ability to construct solos within the context of simultaneous bass line and chordal accompaniment, along with methods he employed to create percussive textures, were the central points of discussion for this dissertation. Hunter’s original composition Recess was selected from the Hunter DVD Right Now Live1, which was transcribed and analysed.

This research is significant due to the lack of detailed analysis of Hunter's techniques in an unaccompanied setting, and to the researcher’s knowledge, …

The Stylistic Variance And Underlying Unity In Selected Organ Works By Clarence Mader, Jacob Richard Benda Jan 2015

The Stylistic Variance And Underlying Unity In Selected Organ Works By Clarence Mader, Jacob Richard Benda

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Clarence Mader (1904-1971) is not a commonplace name heard within most academic institutions or concert halls at this point in music history. During his lifetime, however, he was regarded as a musician of the highest caliber. His expertise was not limited to a singular musical facet but included several. Mader spent the majority of his professional career in California as organist, composer, teacher and organ consultant. Chapter Two will outline the various influences that shaped Mader as a composer during the 20th century in America, as well as identify the common threads that permeate his music. A former pupil of …

A Conductor’S Analysis Of Almeida Prado’S Passion Of Our Lord Jesus Christ According To Saint Mark, Cléusia Carreira Gonçalves Jan 2015

A Conductor’S Analysis Of Almeida Prado’S Passion Of Our Lord Jesus Christ According To Saint Mark, Cléusia Carreira Gonçalves

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This study is based on the analysis and performance considerations of the Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ According to Saint Mark by the Brazilian composer Almeida Prado (1943-2010). This passion setting, which comprises mixed choir, actors, organ, harpsichord and timpani, was composed in 1967. The setting of the passion story strictly follows the gospel account, and no other poetic text, reflective chorales or arias were added. Among other factors, this work is unique in that the choir is used to carry the narrative throughout the work. Also, the composer masterfully uses text-painting in the choral and instrumental parts in …

For The Sake Of St. Cecilia: Analysis And Re-Orchestration Of Gerald Finzi's For St. Cecilia, Op. 30, Christopher Brent Rosborough Jan 2015

For The Sake Of St. Cecilia: Analysis And Re-Orchestration Of Gerald Finzi's For St. Cecilia, Op. 30, Christopher Brent Rosborough

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Gerald Finzi contributed few pieces to the field of choral music, however the works that have been made available are filled with charm and finesse. Similar to the manner of Duparc, his small output encompasses great depth, beauty, and ingenuity. One such work is For St. Cecilia, Op. 30. Hidden behind the veil of the tradition of English musical festivals, Finzi’s St. Cecilia along with other great works became otherwise lost or discarded in the milieu of nineteenth and twentieth century British composition. Uncovering Finzi’s ode, one might find the size of orchestra and chorus a bit daunting. However, in …

Alexander Moyzes And His Piano Sonata In The Context Of Slovak Music Between The Wars, Ivan Koska Jan 2015

Alexander Moyzes And His Piano Sonata In The Context Of Slovak Music Between The Wars, Ivan Koska

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this monograph is to introduce to the English-speaking public the Slovak twentieth-century composer Alexander Moyzes and his Piano Sonata in E Minor, Op. 2 (1942), virtually unknown outside Slovakia. The style of the Sonata represents a retreat from earlier, more experimental positions of its author; this shift can be explained by a closer look at historical and aesthetic circumstances surrounding its composition. The first chapter provides an essential biography of the composer with an emphasis on his life and works between 1925 and 1940. The second chapter compares single movements of the Sonata with earlier manuscripts and …

A Model Of The Tonal-Chromatic System And Its Application To Selected Works Of Gustav Mahler, Andrew David Nicolette Jan 2015

A Model Of The Tonal-Chromatic System And Its Application To Selected Works Of Gustav Mahler, Andrew David Nicolette

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

During the latter half of the twentieth century there was a marked shift in the way that many scholars approached analysis of late-nineteenth-century tonality. This shift in approach was motivated by the behavior and interaction of harmonic and melodic entities encountered in the music of the great composers of the nineteenth century, such as Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Mahler, Wagner, and Strauss. The question arose: did the diatonic system remain at the heart of tonality during the late nineteenth century, or—as some propose—did a new chromatic-based tonality emerge? The acceptance of this new chromatic-based tonality is at the heart of this …

The Saxophone In Puerto Rico: History And Annotated Bibliography Of Selected Works, Marcos David Colón-Martín Jan 2015

The Saxophone In Puerto Rico: History And Annotated Bibliography Of Selected Works, Marcos David Colón-Martín

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The tradition of classical saxophone performance in Puerto Rico officially began quite recently in 1994. Musicians performing regularly in the style are few and local composition of new music for the instrument is rare. This research provides a historical overview of the saxophone in the musical culture of Puerto Rico and explores reasons for the delay on saxophone classical performance to develop. In an attempt to help promote the local performance and composition of new works, the author provides an annotated bibliography of music for saxophone by selected Puerto Rican composers.

Evidence Of Pedagogical Content Knowledge Among High School Band Directors And University Applied Music Teachers In The Context Of Student Self-Evaluation, Danielle Jeanette Emerich Jan 2015

Evidence Of Pedagogical Content Knowledge Among High School Band Directors And University Applied Music Teachers In The Context Of Student Self-Evaluation, Danielle Jeanette Emerich

LSU Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was threefold: (a) to seek evidence of pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) in high school band directors’ (generalists) and applied music teachers’ (specialists) evaluations of musical performance; (b) explore the similarities and differences between generalists’ and specialists’ perspectives on PCK; and (c) compare the evidences of PCK to student musicians’ self-evaluations of same performances. A basic interpretive qualitative approach with data collected through a think-aloud procedure applied to evaluation of solo music performance videos revealed four themes indicative of PCK—Aural Concept, Conveying Information, Effecting Change, and Uncertainty—and attendant sub-themes. Generalists and specialists provided a rich trove …

A Performer's Guide To Sergei Lyapunov's Concerto For Piano And Orchestra No.1, Op.4, Irina Cunev

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This document is intended to contribute to the ongoing study of Sergei Lyapunov’s work by focusing on his First Piano Concerto, a brilliant work that was once highly esteemed, but which has been unjustly neglected over the years. The main purposes of this study and the accompanying public lecture-recital are threefold: 1) to provide a historical background and to discuss major music trends that shaped Lyapunov’s style, along with biographical information about the composer’s life, 2) to provide a specific descriptive analysis of key stylistic elements utilized in the concerto and 3) to provide a detailed discussion of pianistic techniques …
