Tectonic: A Networked, Generative And Interactive, Conducting Environment For Ipad, Lindsay R. Vickery Dr, Stuart James
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
This paper describes the concept, implementation and context of Tectonic: Rodinia for four realtime composer-conductoors and ensemble. In this work, an addition to the reqertoire of the Decibel Scoreplayer, iPads art networked together using the bonjour protocol to manage connectivity over the network. Unlike previous Scoreplayer works, Rodinia combines "conductor view" control interfaces, "performer view" notation interfaces and an "audience view" overview interface, separately identified by manual connection and yet mutually interactive. Notation is communicated to an ensemble via scores independently generated in realtime in each "performer view" and amalgamated schematically in the :audience view" interface. Interaction in the work …
Origins Of Jazz In America, Megan Macfalane
Origins Of Jazz In America, Megan Macfalane
A with Honors Projects
Jazz music was born in America in New Orleans, Louisiana, in the early 20th century. Founded from blues music, which was based off of African American slave’s hymns and field hollers sang out as they worked, it led to the creation of new American musical genres, like bebop and rock and roll. Despite critics’ attempts to discourage it, jazz also was one of the first types of music that people could really swing dance to, causing many integrated social gatherings. The history of Jazz music, how Jazz has influenced today’s society and music as it is currently known and how …

My Experience In Bharata Natyam (Indian Dance), Camillia Mbo Ngubani
A with Honors Projects
Have you ever thought of learning a new style of dance? Or exploring a new way to consider a particular dance or music? Well! Let me suggest that you try an Indian dance class, particularly "Bharata Natyam," and push yourself out of your common dance style. In addition, you will rediscover some hidden talents and expand your circle of friends. Those aspects are what I found during my journey in Bharata Natyam, Indian dance.

Epistemological Foundations Of Objectivist And Interpretivist Research, James Hiller
Books and Book Chapters by University of Dayton Faculty
At the heart of music therapy research, as in any field, is a search for knowledge. For centuries, researchers in a remarkable range of disciplines have conducted research and published findings in a vast array of professional journals and books. It therefore seems reasonable to suppose that we ought to know by now how to go about conducting research, and more importantly what it means to have gained knowledge. Yet problems have persisted along the way and have at various times proven quite challenging and even inconvenient for researchers and their claims to knowledge (Kuhn, 2012). Of particular significance are …

A Grading Catalogue Of Selected Works For Solo Trombone And Piano, Brent Michael Mead
A Grading Catalogue Of Selected Works For Solo Trombone And Piano, Brent Michael Mead
Honors Program Theses
The current status of graded repertoire lists for trombonists is almost nonexistent. Selecting works for students can be difficult especially when you are unfamiliar with the large body of solo literature. I created a list of solo trombone works all graded with the same system in which students and teachers could utilize when selecting new pieces of music to perform. Teachers could more readily find new pieces for their students to study by using this grading scale. It can be difficult for trombone teachers to find easier solo literature for students because of the fact that most works that are …

The Do/Ti Handouts, Daniel B. Stevens
The Do/Ti Handouts, Daniel B. Stevens
Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy
"The Do/Ti Test handouts were developed to enable students to identify harmonic function quickly and accurately. These handouts equip students with a visual representation of a powerful, time-tested strategy for harmonic dictation: the guide-tone method, first described by Rahn and McKay in 1988. Building on and extending the guide-tone method, the Do/Ti Test can be applied to diatonic harmonies, applied chords, chromatic predominants, sequences, and modulation.
This accompanying document contains the following:
The Do/Ti Test Handouts: An Introduction
Explanations for each handout.
Handout 1: The Do/Ti Test: Major-mode Version
Handout 2: The Do/Ti/Te Test: Minor-mode Version

Simple And Compound Time Signatures Re-Examined, Paula Telesco
Simple And Compound Time Signatures Re-Examined, Paula Telesco
Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy
This handout was created for music minors and non-music majors, most of whom enter my class with some music background. They typically have some understanding of simple meters like 2/4, 3/4, and 4/4. Compound Time is typically a difficult concept to teach, so this handout treats compound meter a bit more in-depth than some textbooks. This handout would be appropriate for not only music minors and non-music majors, but also remedial music theory classes for music majors or even Music Theory 1 classes. I believe it could also be used in high school AP classes. There are three worksheets that …
Understanding Dotted And Undotted Notes, Paula Telesco
Understanding Dotted And Undotted Notes, Paula Telesco
Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy
College and high school music students (whether majors or non-majors) likely know something already about note and rest values, what note gets the beat in some particular meter, and differences between undotted and dotted notes, but they often still have difficulty understanding them, dotted notes in particular. This handout will review this material and introduce an additional way to think about note values, setting the stage for additional approaches to meter, as rhythm and meter can often be difficult concepts to master.
Beyond “Three Blind Mice”: An Exemplar For “Day 1” Of Schenkerian Analysis, Andrew Aziz
Beyond “Three Blind Mice”: An Exemplar For “Day 1” Of Schenkerian Analysis, Andrew Aziz
Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy
This document provides a lesson plan and examples for Day 1 of a Schenkerian analysis course. Beginning with tonic prolongation paradigms that provide the structure of a hypothetical soprano-bass framework, the lesson unlocks a hidden Beethoven masterpiece lurking within the counterpoint. The plan also highlights how many melodic notes are "higher" than the soprano as well as how the theory incorporates the notion of tonal hierarchy.
Twenty Questions: An Introduction To Counterpoint, Linear Analysis, And Dissonance Treatment, Daniel B. Stevens
Twenty Questions: An Introduction To Counterpoint, Linear Analysis, And Dissonance Treatment, Daniel B. Stevens
Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy
"Twenty Questions" is a pedagogical resource focused on linear and dissonance-treatment analysis in common-practice music of the 18th and 19th centuries. This resource is designed to be utilized at the advanced high school and collegiate levels. It includes an explanation of contrapuntal analysis in a user-friendly Q&A format, a one-page summary sheet, four sample analyses with commentary, and four assignments with answer keys and extensive commentary for instructors. "Twenty Questions" was first developed as an explanatory guide for analyzing and interpreting Bach's Prelude in C major (WTC, book I). This piece, and the commentary that accompanies it, serves as a …

Fundamentals For Horn Students, Kierstin Jenkins
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Many band directors find teaching horn to be intimidating. Through extensive research, this project has compiled some of the best exercises to help horn players improve and explains the rationale behind them. The written work contains information and descriptions about the different fundamentals that horn students need in order to be successful and develop good tone quality. The appendix includes examples of these exercises so that an educator has resources to teach his/her horn students. The fundamentals included are: breathing, buzzing, long tones, flow studies, lip slurs, and pitch.

The Sketches For Mendelssohn's Paulus, Op. 36, Karl Joseph Simmerman
LSU Master's Theses
Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s Paulus, Op. 36 (1836) is one of the most important nineteenth-century contributions to the oratorio genre. Current scholarly understanding of the oratorio’s creation rests on three dissertations: Stuart Douglass Seaton identified, transcribed, and discussed some of the sketches for Paulus; Siegwart Reichwald examined the extant autographs for Paulus; and Jeffrey S. Sposato thoroughly documented the collaborative compilation of the libretto. None of these studies, however, provides a thorough examination of all the sketches for Paulus.
This study constitutes the first complete transcription of the sketches for Paulus, basing its methodology on the transcription practices …
