Extending Invitations, Becoming Messmates, Alison M. Reynolds, Brent C. Talbot Jan 2016

Extending Invitations, Becoming Messmates, Alison M. Reynolds, Brent C. Talbot

Sunderman Conservatory of Music Faculty Publications

As music educators we can model proactive advocacy among community members to prevent individuals' reactive violence in response to intolerance for differences. We can offer music-learning tables as safe spaces in which community members openly and collaboratively learn to know each other as individuals with diverse identities and interests. As messmates around the table, we can identify ways that researching, questioning, and being musical together can eradicate fears and the damaging effects of homophobia.

Discourse Analysis, Brent C. Talbot Jan 2016

Discourse Analysis, Brent C. Talbot

Sunderman Conservatory of Music Faculty Publications

This chapter (a) presents discourse analysis as both epistemology and methodology; (b) suggests a sociolinguistic toolkit that could be used as one type of approach to conducting discourse analysis; (c) reviews and points to literature in music education and music therapy that have used such epistemological and methodological tools; and (d) suggests that, by engaging with discourse analysis, we can begin to ask questions about participants and their interactions within environments where music therapists operate and analyze prevailing discourses within structures and systems of music therapy. Creating And Performing A Composition For Tuba And Piano, Joel A. Ragona Jan 2016

Creating And Performing A Composition For Tuba And Piano, Joel A. Ragona

Undergraduate Honors Theses

In this creative thesis, I compose and perform a six movement art composition for tuba and piano. The reason for this performance and composition is two-fold. First, I am able to express myself in a way that other methods do not allow. Second, I reinforce important skills that will be vital in my future teaching career. To create the composition, I use various compositional methods, but I mainly adjust the composition by listening to it using piano and online compositional software. Preparing the composition for performance requires that I practice for multiple hours and find an accompanist who will perform …

We Gon' Be Alright, Joel R. Weltzien Mr. Jan 2016

We Gon' Be Alright, Joel R. Weltzien Mr.

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

Music is an art form linked to identity, both of the self, and of one’s role in culture and society. In many social movements, music has been one of the tools used to unite a group in its message by allowing individuals to express themselves via a larger social unit. My presentation uses anthropological theories to examine this phenomenon through one of the latest and more pressing issues in our culture, the racial conflict in the US following the killing of Michael Brown, in which an unarmed black teenager was shot and killed by a white police officer, who was …

Small Jazz Ensembles And Ideals Of Urban Social Interaction, Kaori Otera Chen Jan 2016

Small Jazz Ensembles And Ideals Of Urban Social Interaction, Kaori Otera Chen

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

There is general consensus in urban theory that "community" is good. Nevertheless people in communities may or may not interact to a significant extent with one another nor engage in intertwined social lives, yet tend to claim within-group unity and harmony. A musical model of interaction and engagement may offer a new perspective on the dynamics of community. By listening closely I explore how musicians in small jazz ensembles interact with one another and function during their collective music-making processes and find a set of musical behaviors that exhibits an ideal model for human interaction and engagement in the social …

The Allure Of Music: Implications For Academically Gifted Students, Erin Tolar 16

Honor Scholar Theses

This thesis explores the complex interactions of academic giftedness as it relates to the pursuit of music. The literature review covers some of the main topics of giftedness, including what it means to be gifted, identification of giftedness, and music in gifted programs. Research was conducted at a small liberal arts college with a School of Music on academically gifted students. The survey and follow-up interview were constructed to assess whether academically gifted music students were more likely to experience conflict about their choice of major than academically gifted liberal arts students, non-academically gifted School of Music students, or non-academically …

Music Education At The Troy Female Seminary: 1817-1904, Jennifer Elizabeth Peck Campbell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

When examining the historical origins of music education in the United States there exists a gap in the research concerning female music educators. There have been many calls to action by researchers with the aim of focusing research on the contribution of women to music education. This project sought to document details about musical studies and female music educators at one institution of higher learning. The Troy Female Seminary was founded by Emma Hart Willard in 1817 and exists today as an independent secondary school for females (renamed the Emma Willard School in 1895). Relevant books, journal articles, master’s theses, …

The Prepared Flute: A Survey Of Its History, Techniques, And Repertoire, Stacey Lee Russell Jan 2016

The Prepared Flute: A Survey Of Its History, Techniques, And Repertoire, Stacey Lee Russell

Theses and Dissertations

Beginning with Varese’s Density 21.5 in 1936, composers have been experimenting with extended techniques to expand the flute’s range of sound. In an attempt to increase the timbral possibilities of the instrument, contemporary composers are writing for the prepared flute: adding objects on or inside the flute, or subtracting parts of the flute to alter its sound.

is the first written document to focus on the prepared flute. Deborah Fethers, in her major project discussing contemporary flute design in 2005, mentions the use of prepared flute by Michael Pestel, and states that “to my knowledge the only use of such …

The purpose of this research study is to determine the most frequently listed choral selections on state choral festival repertoire lists and to survey state repertoire directors regarding their opinions of the most important literature for high school choral students. Five questions guided this research: What are the most frequently listed works on state repertoire lists? Which styles do repertoire directors indicate as most important for a vocal music education? Is there any relationship between the compilation of literature and the state repertoire directors’ opinions regarding the importance of specific styles? What is the process for adding works to state …

Jacobs was a key figure in the New York new music scene of the 1960s and 1970s and a personal friend to many composers who were active during this period. The study provides an overview of historical events which brought about the musical climate of late twentieth century America, a climate that was not entirely hospitable to native-born American composers. It examines Jacobs’ collaboration with Elliott …

Part of this document will serve as a performance guide to one of his most important compositions, the Tetralogy of the Sun Suite for …

The Guitar And Hausmusik In The Late 18th And Early 19th Centuries, Jeremy Polley Jan 2016

The Guitar And Hausmusik In The Late 18th And Early 19th Centuries, Jeremy Polley

Theses and Dissertations

While being one of the most popular instruments in Western culture, the guitar has received relatively little scholarly attention. Music historians particularly overlook the guitar and its impact upon the development of music. Writings about the Hausmusik tradition that existed around the turn of the nineteenth century, however, suggest that the guitar was an important part of amateur music making. Analysis of publisher’s catalogs from the period also indicate the existence of a thriving guitar culture at the time. By performing a comparative analysis on works based on a theme by Giovanni Paisello from Fernando Sor and Mauro Giuliani, a …

Vocal Disorders: Evaluation, Treatment, And Maintaining A Healthy Voice, Danielle Kluver Jan 2016

Vocal Disorders: Evaluation, Treatment, And Maintaining A Healthy Voice, Danielle Kluver

Undergraduate Research Journal

Typically, vocal inefficiencies can be diagnosed and cared for by a singer’s voice teacher. Breathing, alignment, and resonance issues are often normal, and almost every singer will face at least one type of vocal inefficiency throughout the course of vocal study. However, when a singer’s vocal tract becomes disordered, proper phonation becomes difficult, even with a voice teacher’s guidance. Vocal disorders differ from inefficiencies because they must be treated under the supervision of a medical professional. Because a singer’s voice teacher is the primary caretaker of their students’ voices, it is the voice teacher’s responsibility to have an understanding of …

The ultimate goal of this project is to achieve a detailed understanding of how Asanga works and record this knowledge for the benefit of any future percussionists who add the piece to their repertoire.

Giuliani’S Naples: A Walking Tour, Nicoletta Confalone, Grégory Leclair Jan 2016

Giuliani’S Naples: A Walking Tour, Nicoletta Confalone, Grégory Leclair

Soundboard Scholar

With 430,000 inhabitants in 1800, Naples had become the third most populous European city after London and Paris. The excavation of the site of Pompeii in the eighteenth century gave a special prestige to the city. Its newly unearthed antiquities and frescoes led to a vogue of neoclassicism across the arts. Images of ancient Greek and Roman lyres inspired the creation of the lyre-guitar, an instrument on which Mauro Giuliani performed on various occasions in Naples--probably more for its visual effect than for audibility's sake.
