A Portfolio Of Compositions, Anne-Marie O'Farrell Jan 2017

A Portfolio Of Compositions, Anne-Marie O'Farrell

Research Theses

The works in the attached portfolio address a number of compositional focal points: to bring together diverse strands of musical influence into sustained musical argument, across various large-scale media; to enlarge and explore the musical language of the harp, including the lever harp; and to integrate received materials into new music so as to create a different context while acknowledging musical inheritance. These combine with the exploration of inherent instrumental colour within my approaches to rhythm, harmony, melodic transformation, structure and the use of text to demonstrate the development of my compositional style during my PhD study. The commentary opens …

Dit Conservatory Of Music And Drama Past And Present: A Celebration Of 30 Years Of The Bachelor Of Music Performance Degree In Dit, Technological University Dublin

Concert Programmes

Tonight we celebrate the success of the last three decades by connecting our Conservatory alumni and current students through what we do best. The music you will hear has been chosen specially for this evening and in many cases has a special meaning or memory for the groups/alumni involved. We are tremendously grateful to our alumni performing this evening: to the eleven featured soloists who represent many different eras of the last 30 years and who immediately said yes when we called, to the alumni who are performing tonight in our ensembles alongside our current students and staff, and to …

Interpreting Classical Music According To Schleiermacher And Gadamer, Isabella Torres Jan 2017

Interpreting Classical Music According To Schleiermacher And Gadamer, Isabella Torres

Georgia Undergraduate Research Conference

Anyone who plays an instrument can tell you that reading classical music can often feel as complicated as struggling through a dense philosophical reading. Trying to play a classical piece with the correct attitude, tempo, and dynamics can be difficult let alone paying attention to crescendos, trills, and other notations in the piece. It is especially frustrating when you think you have performed a piece as it should be played only to have someone point out that the performance was not good enough since you did not play it with the right “attitude” or lacked the correct “touch”. In their …

"United We'll Win Our Stand": The Role Of Focalization In Representing Solidarity In The Anthems Of Three Holocaust Concentration Camps, Hillary Louise Herold Jan 2017

"United We'll Win Our Stand": The Role Of Focalization In Representing Solidarity In The Anthems Of Three Holocaust Concentration Camps, Hillary Louise Herold

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Concentration camps during the Holocaust were populated by various groups of people imprisoned for reasons that were not always associated with religious beliefs. This diversity led to a natural segregation among these groups of prisoners, dependent upon the prisoner’s nationality, the camp’s classification, and its date of establishment. Because of overwhelming feelings of isolation in the majority of the prisoners, it was common to turn to music and music making as means of creating solidarity between the prisoners for survival of their day-to-day experiences. Some works became popular to such an extent through their performances by both prisoners and SS …

The French Enlightenment And Two Men: Napoleon Bonaparte And Beethoven, Kate Pisarczyk, Zach Hall, Nelle Conley Jan 2017

The French Enlightenment And Two Men: Napoleon Bonaparte And Beethoven, Kate Pisarczyk, Zach Hall, Nelle Conley

2017 Festschrift: Beethoven's Symphony No. 3, Op. 55

Many of the philosophies developed during the French Enlightenment circulated around nature and human emotions. These philosophies were written by men, such as Diderot, in the Encyclopedia. Both Napoleon Bonaparte and Ludwig van Beethoven were able to exemplify the French Enlightenment through their representations of self-determination and expertise at their crafts; however, both men experienced pitfalls that greatly affected their careers. Napoleon’s was so detrimental to his career that he was exiled to a small island; whereas, Beethoven took the negativity surrounding the Heiligenstadt Testament and used these feelings to write the Eroica. This symphony was able to exemplify …

The Psychology Of Beethoven And The Eroica Symphony, Sean P. Harty, Rebekah K. Gohl, Dana J. Burhorn, Joshua S. Morano Jan 2017

The Psychology Of Beethoven And The Eroica Symphony, Sean P. Harty, Rebekah K. Gohl, Dana J. Burhorn, Joshua S. Morano

2017 Festschrift: Beethoven's Symphony No. 3, Op. 55

As a concert pianist and chapel organist, Beethoven rose to a fame in Vienna which allowed him patrons and friends who would support his compositions. One such patron was Count Waldstein, who claimed that Beethoven would inherit the spirit of Mozart in his famous prediction of Beethoven’s success. To study composition Beethoven turned to two prominent Viennese composers: Haydn and Salieri. As his fame grew, his health decreased until he was diagnosed with deafness and moved to Heiligenstadt. Here Beethoven wrote a letter to his brothers called the Heiligenstadt Testament, which was never sent but expressed his troubled mental …

Beethoven's Eroica Sketchbooks: From Scribbles To Symphony, Victoria R. Kleeman, Katelyn Thurlby, Caitlin A. Thom, Monica Gil Jan 2017

Beethoven's Eroica Sketchbooks: From Scribbles To Symphony, Victoria R. Kleeman, Katelyn Thurlby, Caitlin A. Thom, Monica Gil

2017 Festschrift: Beethoven's Symphony No. 3, Op. 55

This paper will help readers to gain new insights on Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 in E-flat Op. 55, also known as Eroica, by exploring the sketches related to this symphony. The background of the piece is discussed, and the sketches have been compared to the completed symphony. Beethoven’s sketching process was dramatically different from other composers of his time, and his sketches included even more musical material than was eventually included in the symphony.

Benefactors, Bonds, And Beholders: The Beliefs And Reality Behind Beethoven’S Behavior, Olivia M. Weismann, Abigail L. Smith, Moira R. Dunn, Kathryn E. Krajewski

2017 Festschrift: Beethoven's Symphony No. 3, Op. 55

This paper will explore the relationships which Beethoven had during the years he composed and premiered his Eroica Symphony. Some of the individuals who will be discussed in this paper include Prince Lobkowitz, Ferdinand Ries, and Franz Wegeler. After learning about the nature of these relationships, the reader should begin to realize that Beethoven’s notoriously irrational or ill-tempered behavior was only one facet of his life.

New Bad Girls Of Sudan: Women Singers In The Sudanese Diaspora, Anita H. Fábos Jan 2017

New Bad Girls Of Sudan: Women Singers In The Sudanese Diaspora, Anita H. Fábos

Faculty Works

Explores the new ‘bad girls’ of Sudanese music as they defy national boundaries to bring women’s perspectives and critiques to a global audience. Performers such as Alsarah and Rasha have access to a world music stage to comment upon gender and racial hierarchies, chide Sudanese power brokers about their transgressions, and encourage a more inclusive and just society. Pushback against new voices have included charges in the public domain (e.g. YouTube comments) that these performances are haram and sullied by foreign influence. Emerging out of a larger ethnographic investigation of the Sudanese acoustics of diaspora, my feminist analysis of ‘bad …

The Comparison Of Novice And Master Instrumental Music Educators’ Use Of Figurative Language And Their Attitudes Concerning It As A Tool For Effective Teaching, Matthew H. Spieker Jan 2017

The Comparison Of Novice And Master Instrumental Music Educators’ Use Of Figurative Language And Their Attitudes Concerning It As A Tool For Effective Teaching, Matthew H. Spieker

Research & Issues in Music Education

The purpose of this study was to compare the use of figurative language between master and novice instrumental music teachers and to investigate their attitudes toward figurative language as a teaching tool. Figurative language is defined as any creative verbal instruction intended to teach a concept. Sixteen (N = 16) secondary school, instrumental directors were selected as participants. These were divided into two groups of novice and master teachers. Novice teachers were student teachers or first-year teachers, and master teachers had a minimum of eight years of experience, were selected as master teachers by professors at state universities and …

Song Reconsidered: Words And Music, Music And Poetry, Lawrence Kramer Jan 2017

Song Reconsidered: Words And Music, Music And Poetry, Lawrence Kramer

Art History and Music Faculty Publications

This revised version of an essay first published in 1984 sustains the impetus of the original to upend the traditional understanding of song, in particular of art song, as a harmonious fusion of words and music. Song in general, and art songs or Lieder in particular with their generically mandated dependence on preexisting poetic texts, produces a much wider range of text-music relationships than mere fusion, many of them riddled with tension, cross-purposes, and even outright antagonism. Among song genres, the Lied stands out historically for giving prominence to the diversity of these relationships, starting in the early nineteenth century. …

Belsen Silence, Monica Gil Jan 2017

Belsen Silence, Monica Gil

Geifman Prize in Holocaust Studies

I often look to text for musical inspiration, and after searching through swaths of Holocaust poetry online, I discovered "Belsen Silence" by Iolo Lewis. Its message is less graphic than some of the other texts I found, but that in no way detracts from its power of emotion. It is about looking back, tending to old wounds that are no longer fresh but are still healing. The Holocaust may have happened over fifty years ago, but it is still relevant, even alarmingly so at times. Today's reflections on yesterday's shortcomings are arguably the only way we learn, and that is …
