Interactive Sonification Strategies For The Motion And Emotion Of Dance Performances, Steven Landry Jan 2019

Interactive Sonification Strategies For The Motion And Emotion Of Dance Performances, Steven Landry

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

The Immersive Interactive SOnification Platform, or iISoP for short, is a research platform for the creation of novel multimedia art, as well as exploratory research in the fields of sonification, affective computing, and gesture-based user interfaces. The goal of the iISoP’s dancer sonification system is to “sonify the motion and emotion” of a dance performance via musical auditory display. An additional goal of this dissertation is to develop and evaluate musical strategies for adding layer of emotional mappings to data sonification. The result of the series of dancer sonification design exercises led to the development of a novel musical sonification …

The Tuba And Tape: An Exploration Of Repertoire For Solo Tuba And Fixed Electronic Media, Adam Christopher Denner Jan 2019

The Tuba And Tape: An Exploration Of Repertoire For Solo Tuba And Fixed Electronic Media, Adam Christopher Denner

Honors Program Theses

This project is a combination of my senior recital performance with the Honors Thesis project to present a recital of music that explores the genre of Solo Tuba and Fixed Electronic Media. Fixed Electronic Media is a form of accompaniment that is electronically created before the performance and played back through a data storage format, such as CD, DAT, or digital audio file; use of this is a comparatively narrow and new field that is one of the leading edges in compositions for the tuba. The main goal of this performance has been to provide the audience with a sampling …

Learning And Literacy In Music: Activities For Integrating Children's Literature Into The Elementary General Music Curriculum, Taryn Jeanette Kroymann Jan 2019

Learning And Literacy In Music: Activities For Integrating Children's Literature Into The Elementary General Music Curriculum, Taryn Jeanette Kroymann

Honors Program Theses

In summary, there is plenty of evidence that supports the use of reading children’s literature in a music classroom. While this concept certainly is starting to gain more traction, the purpose of this thesis is to provide a starting point for educators that have not yet begun to take advantage of the rich abundance of content that is found in such literature, or to assist educators who simply want more ideas and evidence to support their teaching choices. In order to improve our teaching and provide as best of an education as we can to our students, we must utilize …

Teaching With Chopsticks And A Rhythm Clock, Paula Telesco Jan 2019

Teaching With Chopsticks And A Rhythm Clock, Paula Telesco

Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy

When teaching rhythm, it can be difficult to convey the concept that beats are not just attack points but have a full duration, which can be divided into many parts; it can also be difficult for students to understand how those divisions and subdivisions do or do not coincide. I have created a number of rhythm clocks (attached) that include color-coded Ta ka di mi syllables (red) and 1 ee and uh counting syllables (blue) to show the division and subdivision of the beat into 2, 3, 4, and 6 parts, and to show simple and compound divisions and subdivisions …

The Healing Power Of Live Music, Brianna Casey Jan 2019

The Healing Power Of Live Music, Brianna Casey

Phase 1

Music has long been recognized for its ability to promote healing and wellbeing in patients across the entire spectrum of healthcare settings. Thanks to recent research into its therapeutic effects, music is now widely accepted as an established part of a holistic healthcare regime. However, more work needs to be done in defining the aspects inherent to music that make it such an effective agent of healing. Notably, little research has been done on whether live musical performance is more effective than recorded music in bringing about therapeutic benefits. The current project sought to explore the differential perceptions of and …

“Who Am I Now?”: A Musical And Creative Case Study/Time Capsule, Alexander M. Olson Jan 2019

“Who Am I Now?”: A Musical And Creative Case Study/Time Capsule, Alexander M. Olson

Phase 1

Background

Medical school is an immense undertaking, emotionally, intellectually, and physically. I heard it said that “medicine is the frontline seat to human condition, without the tools to process that...it becomes traumatic”. I entered this phase of my life with interests and passion outside of my professional aspirations, and I have found it a struggle to devote to them the energy and time that they deserve. I have chosen a project in the humanities track, focused on creating a musical time capsule of creative work.

Objective

To create a chronological record of my evolving musical tastes and influences that I …

Recording The Classical Tuba, Larry Dine Jan 2019

Recording The Classical Tuba, Larry Dine

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Many musicians find it difficult to capture the sound of their instrument in a recording. Often times the trouble is getting a recording to sound natural, or true to life. This is no different for the classical tuba, especially due to the way its sound is produced. This paper focuses on some of the broad variables that go into realistically reproducing the tuba’s sound, which has received very little, if any, academic study.

Within this study, microphone selection and placement is considered, interpreted, and discussed via objective and subjective methods. More specifically, this includes direct and indirect microphone placements, as …

Marcel Tabuteau’S System Of Phrasing Applied To The Primary Themes In Carl Maria Von Weber’S Second Clarinet Concerto, Christopher Charles Bowmaster Jan 2019

Marcel Tabuteau’S System Of Phrasing Applied To The Primary Themes In Carl Maria Von Weber’S Second Clarinet Concerto, Christopher Charles Bowmaster

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This research document provides a biographical sketch of Marcel Tabuteau’s life beginning with his childhood and extending to his retirement from the Philadelphia Orchestra and Curtis Institute of Music. The sketch provides a thorough timeline explaining how each colleague, teacher, student, and ensemble influenced his phrasing system.

Following a series of handwritten notes completed by Tabuteau in his native language in chapter two, application of the system to Carl Maria von Weber’s Second Clarinet Concerto takes place in chapters three to six. The four portions of the system used are the Interrogative/Affirmative/More-Affirmative, Note Grouping, Up and Down Gestures, and Phrasing …

Three Fantasies On African American Songs For String Quartet (Score), Gary Smart Jan 2019

Three Fantasies On African American Songs For String Quartet (Score), Gary Smart

Music Faculty Research and Scholarship

I have been interested in mixing cultural aesthetics and musical styles for all of my life. Gunther Schuller coined the term “third stream” to describe the intertwining of American jazz with the Western European musical traditions. Of course there are so many branches to the trees of both African American music and the European traditions, that Schuller’s term can only have a very general meaning. Still, the “third stream” description does fit my Three Fantasies. In these three movements I combine different materials, styles, and developmental methods, mixing traditions freely, as I attempt to create a specifically American new music. …

Cut A Rug (Score), Gary Smart Jan 2019

Cut A Rug (Score), Gary Smart

Music Faculty Research and Scholarship

“Cut a Rug” (2019) for flute, clarinet, violin, cello and piano

This one movement fantasy is dance music. More specifically, it is an homage to 1920’s American dance music. The piece works well as a concert music, but I think a choreographer might find it fun to work with. “Cut a Rug” is energetic, dramatic and abstract, often toying with the motive of an alternating third. But there’s more than that. I found four pop tunes from the 1920’s which feature that alternating third interval and incorporated these tunes into the mix. You might listen for “Has Anybody Seen My …

Relaxing Music Effects On Implicit Racial Bias And Neural Activity, Viktoriya Robertovna Broyan Jan 2019

Relaxing Music Effects On Implicit Racial Bias And Neural Activity, Viktoriya Robertovna Broyan

All Master's Theses

Music therapy has been used to treat a number of behavioral and emotional problems, including reducing the undesirable effects of having negative and traumatic associations with something/someone (e.g., PTSD). However, there have been no studies that have shown music therapy being used to treat prejudiced beliefs and biases. It was theorized that if music therapy has been used to help treat PTSD symptoms with great success, it is possible that those therapeutic effects could positively extend out to racial bias as well. The purpose of this ERP study was to investigate whether relaxing music could reduce implicit racial bias, specifically …

Fanny Hensel's Das Jahr: Emergent Meaning At The Intersection Of Textual, Visual, And Aural Modalities, Lindsay Gray Clavere Jan 2019

Fanny Hensel's Das Jahr: Emergent Meaning At The Intersection Of Textual, Visual, And Aural Modalities, Lindsay Gray Clavere

Theses and Dissertations--Music

On Christmas Day in 1841, Fanny Hensel presented her husband with a Christmas gift—Das Jahr—a piano cycle comprised of twelve pieces, each one depicting a month of The Year. Not long thereafter, Fanny and husband Wilhelm would collaborate to create a Gesamtkunstwerk, reworking Das Jahr and expanding it by two additional expressions: vignettes drawn into the score by Wilhelm, and epigrams, snippets of poetry by master German poets.

This dissertation seeks to answer the question: “What meaning is achieved by the intersection of the three modalities present in Das Jahr: textual (epigram), visual (vignette), and …

A Kentucky Pioneer In Music Therapy: An Oral History On The Life And Career Of Lorinda Jones, Emma Powers Jan 2019

A Kentucky Pioneer In Music Therapy: An Oral History On The Life And Career Of Lorinda Jones, Emma Powers

Theses and Dissertations--Music

Lorinda Jones, MT-BC, is the longest practicing music therapist in Kentucky. She began her work as a music therapist in 1995 and built a private practice, which expanded over the course of the next 20 years to include services in 16 counties. Ms. Jones’ perspective on the growth of music therapy, both within the state and nationwide, as well as her extensive knowledge of Appalachian folk music, makes her an invaluable resource to Kentucky music therapists. The purpose of this study was to present a historical account of the life and career of Lorinda Jones, to gain her perspective on …
