Although of all the Latin American states, the insular republic of Cuba has maintained the closest contact with the United States, there is nevertheless one aspect of that country's culture of which we have but little understanding. This aspect is the penetrating influence that the Negro has on Cuba's cultural development. Until recently even the white population of Cuba did not fully recognize the role that the Negro had played and is playing in its culture. The definitions of the Auto sacramental which have been devised over a period of three hundred years, from Lope de Vega to the present day, vary from the strictness of: "el auto sacramental, cuyo tema es exclusivamente el dogma de la presencia eucaristica," to the opposite extreme of "No era esencial al auto la materia eucaristica, ni lo fue nunca, en ninguna epoca de su historia." The purpose of this thesis is to give some account of the censorship of books in sixteenth-century Mexico. In the preparation of this study the author carried on investigations of limited scope in the Mexican archives, but more extensive research in the manuscripts would be required for a definitive treatment of the subject. This paper, based largely on printed materials, is intended to serve merely as a preliminary survey of an important phase of the cultural history of Mexico in colonial times.

It is with the Post-Modernist group that we are concerned in this study, for it is in this direction that the poetry of Rafael Alberto Arrieta leads. The poetic expression of Arrieta is not, however, a conscious, deliberate rebellion against Modernism. Arrieta was born in the 1889; he therefore grew up under the influence of Modernism. The most formative years of his life were spent while Modernism dominated the world of poetry. Yet Arrieta had the literary integrity to express his own personality in spite of the prevailing influences.

The Repartimiento System Of Native Labor In Colonial Spanish America, 1549-1601, Arthur R. Steele

This essay will describe the early history of the second form of repartimiento discussed above, viz., the system of forced labor for pay introduced subsequent to 1549. Although the term repartimiento was generally employed in all parts of Spanish America to describe this program of compulsory native labor, special native terms were also used in particular areas. In Peru the Quechua designation mita was very frequently applied as synonymous with repartimiento, while in New Spain a modified Nahuatl word, cuatequil, came into use, although its acceptance appears to have been much less widespread.

In view of the fact that Chimayo is typically rural Spanish, the study is limited to this region only. In this study no attempt is made to analyze the culture into the details of its historical components. This work tends only to offer a study of customs and rituals used in this community.

The Portuguese usage of the preposition following verbs has been thoroughly studied by Francisco Fernandes in his Dictionàrio de verbos e regimes. However, the preposition required to supplement a noun or an adjective before a complementary infinitive has been virtually excluded from Portuguese dictionaries. It is the purpose of this thesis to present a study, together with examples, of this important phase of Portuguese syntax.

To obtain this information, thirty-one works of nineteen modern Portuguese and Brazilian authors were carefully examined, and the prepositional usage was recorded. The following general conclusions are based upon approximately 4,000 examples collected.
