Why Are We Not Worth Saving? Latin American Immigrant Women's Experiences With Post-9/11 Crimmigration Policies And Asylum-Seeking In The United States, Kaye Romans
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis discusses Crimmigration—the convergence of criminal policies and immigration law—in a post-9/11 world as it relates to Latin American Immigrant women seeking asylum in the United States. Utilizing case law, legislation, and legal scholarship, I situate these policies in the broader context of immigration law both nationally and internationally, focusing on key post-9/11 legislation and policies such as Operation Streamline, Operation Liberty Shield, and Title 42, as well as key post-9/11 case law dealing with Latin American women seeking asylum in the United States. With these foundational understandings, I provide possible solutions that would lessen the harms presented to …

For 30 years, New York's sonideros have been making noise on the central avenues of the city's Mexican and Latino ecosystems. The movement, made up of the sonidero (translated literally as "soundman"), his assistants, promoters, fans and dancers, has created a subculture that for a long time defined the relationship between the migrant and his native home in Mexico. Thirty years later, I explore how the movement has evolved, the traits that have distinguished it from the Mexican sonidero movement, and how it continues to flourish under a new generation of deejays.
Othering In Immigration Laws, Andrea Wright, Quenten Jackson, Cesar Raymundo
Othering In Immigration Laws, Andrea Wright, Quenten Jackson, Cesar Raymundo
Immigration Scholarship: History, Trends and Development in Global Immigration
The ethical wrongs in immigration laws severely impact what it means to be an immigrant American citizen. The Hispanic and Latino groups experience “citizenship” in the United States in a way that portrays them as uneducated and poor criminals, and this paper seeks to understand the reasoning behind this unfair reputation. In order to answer questions of ethics and law, this paper begins with studying the root of othering, regarding immigration in the United States. This research paper investigates the evolution of race-based exclusion laws in immigration and focuses on the relationship between these exclusion laws and race hierarchy in …
Teaching Spanish Conversation Through The Uaps: A Pedagogy Of Jesuit Values And Mission, Richard D. Reitsma
Teaching Spanish Conversation Through The Uaps: A Pedagogy Of Jesuit Values And Mission, Richard D. Reitsma
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
This praxis piece explores the development of a Jesuit focused pedagogy within the context of a Spanish language conversation course. The author begins by defining the origins of the pedagogy employed in this course and how it came to be centered around the Universal Apostolic Preferences of the Society of Jesus (UAPs) which consist of the following goals: 1) Showing the way to God/goodness/hope through discernment; 2) Walking with the excluded, the poor, the outcasts of the world, those whose dignity has been violated, in a mission of reconciliation and justice; 3) Journeying with Youth, to accompany young people in …
Forgotten Immigrant Voices: West Indian Immigrant Experiences And Attitudes Towards Contemporary Immigration, Danielle Cross
Forgotten Immigrant Voices: West Indian Immigrant Experiences And Attitudes Towards Contemporary Immigration, Danielle Cross
Honors Scholar Theses
Scholarly work and media coverage both point to the negative effect that the rhetoric and policy of former US President Donald Trump had on the lived experience and wellbeing of immigrant groups explicitly targeted by it (i.e., the “Trump effect”). Typically, the focus has been on Muslim and Latino immigrants as well as those less-explicitly targeted but still affected by Trump-era policies, such as temporary workers. This thesis explores whether Black immigrants from the English-speaking Caribbean, a group notably missing from the literature of “Trump effects” on immigrant experiences, experienced similar attitudinal or practical effects as a result of contemporary …
Historical Underpinnings And Consequent Effects Of Labor Exploitation Of Mexican And Central Americans In The United States, Andrew Elkins
Historical Underpinnings And Consequent Effects Of Labor Exploitation Of Mexican And Central Americans In The United States, Andrew Elkins
World Languages, Literatures and Cultures Undergraduate Honors Theses
The experience immigrants have today working and living in the southern United States is defined by systems that have developed out of lingering racist attitudes and reactions toward these individuals. The flow of people across the U.S.-Mexico border has a long history, and it is characterized by patterns that have continued from early guest worker programs to the present-day flow of migrants, both legal and undocumented. Also continually present is the racialization of these migrants, which has often forced them to work and live as marginalized members of American society. This project will explore the establishment of Mexican American citizen …
Pasado, Presente, Futuro: A Story Of Immigration, Constanza Galindo Acosta
Pasado, Presente, Futuro: A Story Of Immigration, Constanza Galindo Acosta
MA Projects
Oftentimes when speaking about immigration the conversation centers
around specific political agendas, economic impact, or labor. However important
these topics may be, they fail to understand the humanity of immigration, leaving
behind the most essential part of the conversation: the voice of the actual
immigrants. How can a more individualistic approach towards the experience of
the immigrant give us a better understanding of the nuances of immigration as a
whole? Pasado, Presente, Futuro takes as inspiration the personal experiences of
nine Latinx artists that currently live in the United States as a way to tell the past,
present, and future …

Cosmic Desert Art, Mike Graham De La Rosa
Chamisa: A Journal of Literary, Performance, and Visual Arts of the Greater Southwest
The Cosmic Desert are the designs inspired by chile hallucinations, desert creatures, and the long weird neon nights in the Borderworld. Made with love on the banks of the Rio Grande.
My family is originally from Northern Mexico but I grew up in Northern New Mexico down river of both where Al Hurricane and Nuclear Annihilation were originally created. Amongst chollas, rattle snakes, and river willow, the imagining of New Mexico permeates the landscapes. The Cosmic Desert is inhabited lowriders, taco trucks, neon adobe bars, cholas, native peoples, immigrants, punk rockers and cowboys. Just beyond the darkness, our imagination takes …

Those Who Stay - U.S. Immigration Policies And The Impact Of Migration On The Communities Of Oaxaca, Mexico, Aliah Mccord
Those Who Stay - U.S. Immigration Policies And The Impact Of Migration On The Communities Of Oaxaca, Mexico, Aliah Mccord
Honors Program Theses
Immigration is one of the most divisive topics in the United States. One aspect of this complicated theme is economic migration. This migration is different from asylum/refugee status or other forms of protected relief. The people who are migrating are not facing imminent threats of political violence or other types of violence, but are living in conditions of poverty. Their livelihoods depend on migration, and money earned in the United States that is sent back to their communities.
The first part of this paper will focus on people who migrate for this economic-based reason, specifically examining two communities in Oaxaca, …
Immigrants: A Threat To The Economy Or Cultural Identity? A Case Study Of Haitian And Venezuelan Immigrants In Chile, Erin Geist
Honors Theses
Historically, countries often faced the difficult task of favoring one immigrant group over another. Typically, this is in response to their inability to support those immigrants due to an unstable economy. However, some scholars argue that during times of economic prosperity, excluding immigrants may be the result of the group’s incapacity to assimilate to the nation’s “cultural identity”. Since Chile’s conception as a nation and as one of the most prosperous Latin American countries, they have received notably minuscule immigration rates. As a result, Chileans prides themselves as a relatively homogeneous country. Consequently, in 2018, President Sebastián Piñera differentiated visas …
Dual Lives Assimilation Literacy, Shiloh Garcia
Dual Lives Assimilation Literacy, Shiloh Garcia
Master of Arts in Professional Writing Capstones
In recent years, the field of literacy studies has not given enough attention to exploring the English literacy journeys of immigrants and in particular, Latin immigrants. Furthermore, there has been little dialogue that has encouraged plans to help fix this issue.
We, in the academy, have a unique opportunity to not only tell the stories of the world but also help create avenues for those stories in order to create change. For this reason, this study focuses on important topics such as the effects of the dominant language on Latin immigrants, if it is possible to have a grounded native …

One Salvadoran Mother Was Determined To Bring Her Son To The U.S. Legally— It Took 24 Years, Maggie Veatch
Capstones
Desperate for a better life, Daysi Perla fled violence in El Salvador to provide a better life for her ten-year-old son. She immediately received temporary legal status. But by the time the paperwork for her son was processed, he was 34 years old with a 5-year-old child of his own. This is a story of a broken immigration system, and shows why Salvadorans are now risking their children's lives by bringing them to the U.S.

Chinese Cubans: Transnational Origins And Revolutionary Integration, Kevin J. Morris
Chinese Cubans: Transnational Origins And Revolutionary Integration, Kevin J. Morris
The Corinthian
The Chinese legacy in Cuba exists in a dual state, at once both a fundamental aspect of the Cuban people and the Cuban nationality while also an oft-overlooked strand in the fabric of Cuban society and culture. While today the official number of Chinese-born Cubans in Cuba is low, the number of Chinese-descendants in Cuba may well number in the hundreds of thousands. This duality merits exploration, as it sheds light on the unique experiences of Chinese Cubans and Chinese-descendants through several eras of Cuban history. Most interestingly, the role and presence of Chinese Cubans in the Cuban Revolution provides …

Two Cultures, One Identity: Biculturalism Of Young Mexican Americans, Janela Aida Salazar
Theses and Dissertations--Community & Leadership Development
The purpose of this study was to explore the daily life of the younger generation of Mexican Americans through a phenomenology design. Specifically, in regard to how the culture-sharing pattern of biculturalism is reflected in their lives and the way they construct their bicultural identity. The study utilized rich qualitative data to paint a clear and descriptive picture of the internal process of biculturalism within eight Mexican American college students. Ultimately, the data analysis aimed to collect and reflect their voices and the stories. This was done through three distinct data methods that complemented each other: interviews (oral), photo elicitation …

El Viaje Desde Centroamérica A Los Estados Unidos: How Us Foreign Policy Impacts Migration From Central America To The United States, Cecilia Cerja
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
In the face of ever increasing civil conflict in Central America, the United States is attempting to grapple with immigration reform as the number of refugees continues to rise. Though the dominant narrative seems to indicate that people are flocking to the United States for economic opportunity, upon further analysis it seems that there are a variety of push and pull factors for migration to the United States. In this thesis three case studies of Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala are analyzed to determine the push and pull factors causing migration to the United States. After examining the push and …

Both were enormously influential in their chosen professions, contributing to the development of new hybrid artistic forms that combine traditional and modern elements and incorporate styles from different cultures. Cánepa used his art to express political themes, chiefly his opposition …
Trauma In Guatemala And Postville, Iowa, Jessica J. Lechtenberg
Trauma In Guatemala And Postville, Iowa, Jessica J. Lechtenberg
Latin American Studies: Student Scholarship & Creative Works
This study uses a historical understanding of Guatemala to explain the significant trauma following the largest immigration raid in U.S. history which primarily deported Guatemalan residents who had been working at the Agriprocessors meat processing plant without documentation. Through an analysis of literature detailing the immigration raid, Guatemala's history of violence, and court proceedings, I have found that high levels of trauma exist for the individuals who were deported following the raid and for their families and friends. Personal communication with the current Dean of Students at Postville's public school lends a hand in gaining a deeper understanding of the …

The Creation Of The Border Crisis: How The Media Influenced The Situation At The U.S./Mexico Border In 2014, Alejandra Baron
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
In 2014, thousands of women and children from Central America trekked across Mexico to reach the United States border in hopes of seeking asylum. As oppose to previous immigration surges, it was the first time that this amount of asylum seekers had reached within a short period of time the border. The media in the United States took an important role in describing the occurrences at the U.S./Mexico border in the rhetoric and dialect used. The polarization of the audience mimicked the partisan government that could not agree on a solution and left the situation at the border in a …
Campesinos, Jóvenes E Inmigrantes: La Ecuación Liberal Y Revolucionaria Chilena Frente Al Estado De Sitio En La Carta A Francisco Bilbao (1852) De Santiago Arcos, Alvaro Kaempfer
Spanish Faculty Publications
This article analyzes Francisco Bilbao’s Letter to Francisco Bilbao (1852) by focusing on the constitutional aspect of his political platform, a liberal revolution conceived to dismantle social, economic and juridical inequalities in order to advance a democratization agenda, and the social construction of its historical protagonist, particularly in terms of the necessary alliance between peasants, youth and immigrants in mid-Nineteenth century Chile.
Ice, Genesis Montalvo

First-Gen Voices: Creative and Critical Narratives on the First-Generation College Experience
Commonly known as ICE, the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement works to monitor the level of illegal migration to the United States. They also are in charge of at least 40% of deportation of innocent, non-criminal immigration violators. At times, the children of these immigrants are born in the United States. As US citizens, ICE cannot deport them without violating their rights, resulting in the separation of families. This poem speaks of a young child whose mother was deported by ICE and the yearning of wanting to know where the mother is. The mix of English and Spanish reinforces the …
Economic Assimilation For Immigrants In Chile: An Employment Convergence Analysis, Emily C. Long
Economic Assimilation For Immigrants In Chile: An Employment Convergence Analysis, Emily C. Long
Scripps Senior Theses
Blending migration studies and labor economics, this thesis explores the economic implications of immigrant assimilation in Chile by using probit models to test for employment convergence and labor market convergence between immigrant groups and native Chileans. Using census data from 1992 and 2002, we find significant differences in the employment and labor force participation rates for these demographic groups, affected by the immigrants’ gender, decade of arrival, and country of origin. We see evidence of the nascent care industry in Chile, as well as the implications of the Chilean visa system and employment contracts. Additionally, we see employment probabilities fall …

"Pa'l Norte," "Sueño Americano" E "Ice El Hielo": Un Análisis Del Video Musical En El Desmontaje De La Retórica Anti-Inmigrante En Los Estados Unidos, Aida M. Villarreal-Licona
Scripps Senior Theses
This thesis is an analytical case study of three music videos, "Pa'l Norte" by Calle 13, "Sueño Americano" by Los Rakas, and "Ice El Hielo" by La Santa Cecilia. It explores the visual and lyric narratives of these works and their role in critiquing anti-immigration rhetoric towards Latino immigrants in the United States in a post-9/11 context. Through critical analysis, this thesis argues that their work is vital in dismantling the dehumanizing and criminalizing language prevalent in legal and popular discourse, as well as challenging the manifestations of everyday "illegality."
