The various novel of Bernardo Guimaraes, written for the moot part during the thirty-year period 1853-1884, are in many respects typical reflections of the literary currents then prevalent in Brazil. In topic and treatment Guimarães’ work reflected the popular taste and differed little from the work of his contemporaries. The modern Ecuadorian novel contains many autochthonous features common to several of the less advanced nations of Latin America. The fact that it is heavily sociological in nature will come as no surprise to any serious student of Latin American literature. Economic dissatisfaction, social reform, leftist political propaganda, and inordinate sexual desires are not themes used exclusively by the Ecuadorians. When Franklin D. Roosevelt first assumed office as President of the United States, he inherited a new Latin American policy from his predecessor, Herbert Hoover. Hoover had made sincere overtures to the Latin Americans in order to dispel their fears and dislike for the United States. By officially repudiating the Roosevelt Corollary, encouraging a peaceful settlement of the Tacna-Arica dispute, ending the Marine occupation in Nicaragua, instigating the withdrawal of United States forces in Haiti, and theoretically abandoning “nonrecognition” as an implement of political pressure. Hoover successfully laid the ground work for the Good neighbor policy which Roosevelt vigorously pursued.

The author has endeavored to present a resume of the training provided for Latin American officers at the U.S. Army Command and Staff College, to analyze the performance of six selected graduates and to discuss the benefits derived by the participants from the program. It is hoped that the information collected will be of value to others doing research in the field of inter-American affairs and will stimulate further work in the specific area of military training.

This writer first became interested in the 1933 revolution in Cuba during lectures given in May, 1963 at the University of New Mexico. As part of these lectures an interesting theory was presented regarding the Communist "takeover" of Cuba. Briefly, this theory holds that behind every successful Communist revolution (Russia, China, Cuba, for examples) there has been an earlier attempt at social revolution which failed. In the case of Cuba, this would be the revolution of 1933, and especially the reformist provisional government of Dr. Ramón Grau San Martín.

The purpose of this study, then, is to show how two authors, Benito Pérez Galdós of Spain and Eçadde Queiroz of Portugal, contributed to the liberal movement by expressing their ideas against the church dogma and tradition. It must be emphasized, however that never did Eça or Galdós attack the Church outright, but rather its practices. These were the authors' ways of expressing disapproval of certain religious practices of some of its narrow minded members. In the late 1930’s the Good Neighbor policy of the United States was put to a test by the governments of Bolivia and Mexico in their confiscation of foreign oil holdings for alleged violations of the law of their respective countries. Mexico was considered to be the first real test of the Good Neighbor policy, yet the little known Bolivian confiscation of the Standard Oil company of New Jersey holdings preceded it by a year. The purpose of this study is to examine in depth the situation as it occurred in Bolivia.

The object of this study is to present the ideology of the Spanish people as it is seen in the oldest of the historical ballads. The method of ballad selection is of vital importance and is based on the following assumptions:

1. The primitive epic (from its origin through the twelfth century) is a near perfect expression of popular ideology.

2. The epic degenerated in the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth centuries. Degeneration is considered to mean the gradual substitution of chivalresque values for epic values and increasing failure to express popular concepts.
