Throughout their experiences in this country, certain segments of the Black population have viewed themselves as enslaved, whether they were chattel owned by slaveowners prior to emancipation, whether they were impressed into peonage and forced to work on white plantations and in chain gangs after slavery, whether they were victims of sharecropping systems that virtually reenslaved them during the twentieth century, whether they were the repressed and disfranchised and persecuted in Southern Jim Crow towns throughout the first half of the twentieth century, whether they are those trapped by unemployment and poverty today, or whether they are among the Blacks …

A Model For Ministry Of Church Elders In The Inca Union Of Seventh-Day Adventists, Luis Miguel Luna

Dissertations

Purpose. The purpose of this research was to elucidate the ministry of lay elders as it is suggested in the New Testament and to construct a model for the ministry of local church elders in the Inca Union Mission.

Method. This study was documentary and theological. The primary source was the New Testament, specifically the gospels, the book of Acts, and the epistles. Secondary literature was employed to support the biblical findings of the elders' tasks.

Conclusions. In harmony with the teaching of the Scriptures regarding early church organization and leadership, elders are selected by the local church and ordained …

A study of the feminine characters in twenty-five plays by Luis Vélez de Guevara, taken from three general categories of the Spencer and Shevill listing: sixteen "comedias novelescas," seven "histórico-novelescas," and two "comedias divinas."

Each play studied is provided with a short historical bibliography, a brief summary of the plot and the analysis of its feminine characters.

By means of this character, an attempt is made to determine Vélez's special perception and sensibility with regard to the feminine generally and to the treatment of women in a society that the Spanish theater of the Golden Age to some extent reflects. …

This study of the author's work -- A Paixão (1965), Cotes (1978), and Lusitânia (1980) -- is a theoretical and critical approach to his artistry within this problematic situation. It is informed by the theory of archetypal symbolism (Northrop Frye and Mircea Eliade), considered here as the manner of pragmatic signification in a referential context. Consequently, the poetic images are referred to their semantic association with ideological aspects of Portuguese reality. When I returned to Jamaica in July 1982, I took as gifts for friends some recent novels by black American writers, including Toni Cade Bambara's The Salt Eaters. Upon my arrival, Erna Brodber gave me a copy of her new book, Jane and Louisa Will Soon Come Home. This is reflected in the movement away from the effects of colonization in the Englishspeaking Caribbean countries towards greater political and institutional independence. One history curriculum is examined because of the need for detailed examination of content of the document and because that history curriculum best represents the trend of curriculum development in the region. This study is a feminist analysis of Adélia Prado and Gilka Machado's use of imagery and themes to express their female point of view.

The work of these two poets resembles that of many contemporary English-speaking women poets. They draw spiritual and creative nourishment either from identification with nature or association with a community of women. They associate the spiritual with the mundane and the erotic, and each one enjoys her own body and its sensuality. They rework traditional myths into positive, empowering images for women. James Baldwin, like innumerable other Black artists, has found that in his efforts to express the plight of the Black man in America, he has been forced to deal over and over again with that inescapable dilemma of the Black American - the lack of sense of a positive self-identity. Time after time in his writings he has shown an awareness of the fact that identity contains, as Erik Erikson so accurately indicates, "a complementarity of past and future both in the individual and in society." Eduardo Ramirez Villamizar is a twentieth century Colombian sculptor who is, like many of his contemporaries, intent on the creation of art that is particularly Latin American in character. In pursuit of this goal, he relies on an innate spirituality and on inspiration from his visual memory. His work demonstrates an unconscious bond with artists of the Pre-Columbian societies and shows a recognized appreciation of their techniques of visual expression.

Time boundaries delimit mankind's concerns while subtly affecting the perspective men have on all ontological questions. However, Jorge Luis Borges' short fiction develops an a-temporal perspective that denies the distinctions of a past, present, and future, obscuring traditional human conceptions of time and reality. He repetitively uses cycles and labyrinths as spatial metaphors for time to emphasize man's Inability to escape the maze of existence and to define a final reality that he can order. Throughout history states have pursued both cooperative and power-oriented strategies. Moralists and realists have long questioned the appropriateness of using force to gain state objectives. Recent analysts have stressed that states have a moral duty to manage international uncertainty in the best interests of their citizens. While this might involve utilizing both power-seeking and order-seeking strategies, it has been suggested that pursuing order-seeking strategies could help alleviate international uncertainty.

An historical survey, as well as recent case studies in Grenada and Nicaragua, indicate that the United States often has relied upon military strategies in the Caribbean Basin. The United States …

COMMENTS: The following Shoshone tale, Tatape Pekkappɨh "Sun Killer," also known as "Cottontail and the Sun, " was told to me in 1968 at Fort Hall, Idaho, by Mrs. Myrtle Nevada. I recorded the tale on tape and later transcribed, translated, and linguistically analyzed it with the aid of Mrs. Nevada's niece, Mrs. Lillian Vallely. Mrs. Nevada was a well-known storyteller and had been telling tales like this for many years. She was in her late seventies in 1968, and unfortunately, like most of the other great Shoshone natɨkwinnawappinnɨɨ "storytellers," she has since passed away. The tale was told in …

The pre-Columbian cultures occupying the geographic complex known today as South Texas and the Mexican state of Tamaulipas, lived a nomadic existence for thousands of years. Spaniards explored the area shortly after their arrival in America and attempted to colonize among the Indians. They were unsuccessful until the mid 1700s. By that time, Iberian culture had adapted to American conditions and had emerged in a Mexican form. Indian societies had been integrated into the new Spanish-Mexican culture. This society, more tolerant of indigenous populations, succeeded in establishing communities among Coahuiltecos, residents of South Texas and Tamaulipas. Spanish-Mexicans also modified established …
