Osmotic Borders: Thinking Locally, Thinking Globally About The Causes And Effects Of Labor Migration, Roberto L. Corrada

The Oxford Dictionary and Thesaurus defines osmosis both as "any process by which something is acquired by absorption," and as a biological cellular function by which solvents are absorbed through semipermeable partitions. The two articles by Professor Sylvia Lazos and Donna Maeda, which both deal with the causes and effects of labor migration, though on different levels and involving different populations, challenge traditional notions of the physical and metaphysical borders between nation-states.

Not Everyone Who Speaks Spanish Is From Spain: Taino Survival In The 21st Century Dominican Republic, Pedro Ferbel-Azcarate

The national identity of the Dominican Republic is based on an idealized story of three cultural roots-- Spanish, African, and Taíno--with a selective amnesia of the tragedies and struggles inherent to the processes of colonial domination and resistance. Further, African, Taíno and mixed AfroMestizo culture have been marginalized in favor of nationalist ideologies of progress and civilization found in the embrace of Hispanidad and Catholicism. In such a way, Dominicans have been disconnected from their African, their indigenous, and their mixed Afro-Mestizo Criollo (Creole) ancestry and cultural heritage, even though it is these ancestries and heritages which mark Dominicans with …

The Trend Of Academic Achievement And Retention For Immigrant Latino Youth, Pamela Humphrey

This paper discusses the trend of academic achievement and retention for Latino immigrant youth. Research indicates that the general trend for Latino youth is negative – generally achievement is lower than any other immigrant ethnic group, and the drop out rate is higher than for any other ethnic group. Factors such as language and methods of learning, segregation, poverty, low parental involvement in education, discrimination, and stress due to immigration have been identified as factors contributing to low academic success.
The ways in which schools deal with immigrant students is also discussed. Further research is needed on immigrant Latino families …

The Exaltation And Musicality Of The Gypsy Cante Jondo As Exemplified By The Poetry Of Federico García Lorca, Auristela Rodriguez Merlano Lung

Federico García Lorca is considered as one of Spain's most important twentieth century poets. He was born near Granada to a well off landowner who loved the country and Gypsy cante jondo music. Growing up in this environment nurtured Federico's desire to appreciate his surroundings, music and the Gypsy culture. He took piano and flamenco guitar lessons. That is why many of his works are saturated with nuances and direct references to both nature and music. In his Poema del Cante Jondo one travels across Andalusia and penetrates into its folklore.
