In the Republic of Panama, the Festival of the Mejorana is an event that takes place each year allowing for musicians and dancers from across the country to gather and celebrate as well as compete. The idea of competition provides a platform to discuss commonalities among the performers as well as their differences. This presentation will highlight the national pride of Panamanian folkloric performers as associated with a specific, annual festival venue.

Data for this report comes from the U.S. Census Bureau’s Survey of Business Owners Public Use Microdata Sample (SBO PUMS) as well as published tables based on the full survey. The most recent release of the Survey of Business Owners is based on data collected in 2007. The data only allows for an imperfect portrayal of the current conditions of Latino businesses in the state. However, the analyses of such data, as presented in this report, constitute an important baseline from which to continue to monitor the growth and conditions of these businesses. The place-names that residents of the Mexica capital of Tenochtitlan (today Mexico City) gave to their city were both descriptive of topography and commemorative of history. Largely efaced from the Spanish historical register, Mexico City’s Nahuatl place-names were rescued from historical oblivion by José Antonio Alzate in the eighteenth century and again by Alfonso Caso in the twentieth. However, efacement is not equal to extinction, and this article argues for the continued use, even creation, of Nahuatl place-names into the eighteenth century. This article offers a reflection on poetics and the stylistic analysis of the degree of complexity involved in discerning the meaning of a poem in terms of form and content, and the objective or subjective nature of traditional poetic genres. The expressed thesis is bound to the idea of ambiguity, to the hermeticism, or radical composition of contemporary poetry that has rendered the reader a co-responsible agent in the text’s consumption. Nevertheless, as something beyond multiple readings that allow for abstraction and imagined meanings, poetry is made up of words that, strictly speaking, have no room for error.

In Elena Poniatowska’s novel, Querido Diego, te abraza Quiela, readers detect a connection to the historical context of Paris during the early twentieth century and the relationship of Diego Rivera with Angelina Beloff. Since it is known that Poniatowska created this fictional account after having read Bertram Wolfe’s biography of Diego Rivera, this study focuses on the actual, physical letters in the archives, consulted by Wolfe, to reflect on evidence and recreation, to posit that different narratives emerge when each source is studied separately, and that our comprehension of biography and fiction can be altered after reviewing these historical documents. …

In this reading of Elena Poniatowska’s Paseo de la Reforma, the plot goes beyond a love story and personal transformation of the protagonist to represent a metaphor in microcosm for Mexico City. Although a shorter work than her more highly recognized novels and testimonies, the tensions between social classes and the unearned privileges of the elite in this novel stand in contrast to the suffering of the masses.

The Canal, a vibrant community of Latino immigrant families, is rich in diversity and cultural traditions, strong family networks, and a determination towards economic selfsufficiency. Latino immigrants in Marin County are heavily concentrated in the Canal and have the highest labor force participation rates in the County.i Despite being a vital part of Marin’s social, economic, and cultural society, Canal residents continue to struggle to meet basic necessities for their families.

Latin American, Caribbean, and U.S. Latino Studies Faculty Scholarship

Cruise ship tourism is a dynamic site of inquiry within the anthropology of tourism. Its history and current social manifestations concerns millions of localities around the globe that combine to form a transnational entity like no other. Billions of dollars and tourists’ bodies transverse oceans every year and the historical, social, and political processes that follow these flows of money and people are appropriately complex for ethnographic engagement. Applied anthropology, as a method and theory dedicated to problem solving, seems is ripe for the study of cruise ship tourism.

This paper contributes to the archaeological study of movement in urban environments where built forms and natural features worked together to play a key role in structuring human mobility.We propose an analytical method using least cost analysis in a Geographic Information System (GIS) to empirically measure social integration. The method defines mobility as the potential for pedestrian movement, and identifies locations where people were most likely to walk to or through in a landscape. The Dissertation uses border theory to craft a comparative study that explores the promotion of the white jí­baro in Puerto Rico throughout the twentieth century and the challenges to that racialized identity that emerged simultaneously. Through a biographical approach that examines the lives of José Julio Henna (1848-1924), Arturo Alfonso Schomburg (1874-1938), Muna Lee (1895-1965), Juano Hernández (1896-1970), Ruby Black (1896-1957), Luis Muñoz Marí­n (1898-1980), Pura Belpré (1899-1982), Inés Mendoza (1908-1990), and Roberto Clemente (1934-1972) as symbols of Puerto Ricanness and contributors to its definition, the Dissertation analyzes the racial and gendered inequalities that persisted during twentieth century Puerto Rico. …
