En este estudio, tomamos una aproximación semántico-pragmática para trazar la gramaticalización de la construcción verbal hallar (que) en el discurso oral de una comunidad salvadoreña. El primer objetivo es llevar a cabo un análisis cualitativo y cuantitativo de los verbos hallar, pensar, creer, opinar, encontrar y parecer en dos corpus de habla (San Sebastián Corpus vs. Brownsville Corpus), para comparar sus funciones léxicas y epistémicas. El segundo objetivo es comparar la construcción salvadoreña hallar (que) con su análogo brasileño achar (que), para determinar el comportamiento y los diferentes canales de gramaticalización epistémica de ambas construcciones.

The im(migration) and refugee crisis that are being exacerbated under the Trump administration, is a manifestation of empire-building and the long history of colonization of the Global South. A Marxist-humanist perspective recognizes these as consistent aspects of a clearly racist global capitalism that functions in the interest of multibillion dollar U.S.–based corporations and increasingly transnational corporations. Trade agreements, international economic policy, political intervention, invasion or the threat of these, often secure corporate interests in specific countries and regions. Este ensayo examina un corpus de escritos producidos por Clarice Lispector en la década del sesenta escasamente estudiados. Se trata de textos muchas veces publicados bajo la rúbrica de “crónicas” que fracasan en cumplir con lo que tradicionalmente se espera del género. Recurriendo a las teorías de los nuevos materialismos feministas articuladas por Stacy Alaimo, Karen Barad y Nancy Tuana, el análisis se centra en estos textos “fracasados”, a la par que en las “columnas/páginas femeninas” diseñadas por Lispector, para postular este fracaso como intervención cultural y política que redefine la categoría de lo humano.

Universities in the United States and Ecuador must meet various policy guidelines concerning research and teaching that address the needs of their local communities. In Ecuador, the higher education law requires that universities undertake research and public outreach projects that respond to societal needs. In the United States, Carnegie Research Classifications motivate universities to serve their publics by carrying out community-engaged research. Bilingual people often find themselves in a situation where they switch from one language to another. As with the number of Spanish speakers exponentially increasing in the United States, “code-switching” within Spanish and English is more noticeable within work spaces. When and where does code switching occur? Why does it occur? And what does it mean about the work environment? At the 1939/40 New York World’s Fair, the Peruvian government installed a multimedia display of objects and products in a foreign pavilion. An examination of the building and its contents provides a basis to understand how art and commerce work together to construct narratives of authenticity, nationalism and modernity.

This thesis seeks to illuminate the economic, cultural and social subjugation of Puerto Rico, and its people, through the stripping of personal and political self-determination imposed by U.S. colonization. This research explores historic examples of Puerto Rican perseverance and analyzes psychologically protective factors supporting survivorship and resilience, such as familism and ontological security. The effects of Hurricane Maria on mental health are highlighted in the research, as is the correlation between a lack of electrical power and adverse health/wellness outcomes. Under the guise of post-hurricane development, the national government of Antigua and Barbuda exploited the disasterscape of post Hurricane Irma Barbuda to usher in a new wave of economic development that has left Barbudans separated from their unique culture and identity. In this article we explore what are inhabited vs. uninhabited spaces, the effects of Colonial Christian ideas on cultivated vs. uncultivated lands and the effects of capitalist seduction to traditional landscapes and seascapes. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the ways in which the internationalist outlook of the Cuban Revolution was promoted through the solidarity posters produced by the OSPAAAL organization. This includes an analysis of the ways in which Cuba was influenced by and spread their influence to nations throughout the world. Particularly interesting is Cuba’s relationship with the United States. While promoting a message of anti- Americanism and anti-capitalist consumerism, Cuba also borrowed heavily from 5 contemporary American artistic traditions, and utilized styles and symbols synonymous with American culture to promote their message of anti-imperialism.
