Shrinkage Cracking In Concrete Tilt-Up Construction, Stewart Hooks, Jack Robinson Jun 2017

Shrinkage Cracking In Concrete Tilt-Up Construction, Stewart Hooks, Jack Robinson

Architectural Engineering

The purpose of this project is to investigate a particular, undesirable cracking pattern in concrete tilt-up panels that, until now, did not have a known definite cause. The cause of this cracking pattern is hypothesized to be due to shrinkage restraint of the concrete panels. The cracking under investigation occurs at the bottom corners of the Tilt-Up panels, suggesting that the base of the panel is restrained from shrinkage. This project models various components of Tilt-Up Construction that have potential for restraining the panels from shrinking. This project consists of the following main components.

The first aspect of this project …

Speculations On A City For Mars, Edouard Terzis May 2017

Speculations On A City For Mars, Edouard Terzis

School of Architecture - Theses

This thesis proposes the reinterpretation of architectural forms as the index of the constitution of the idea of the city. “Speculations on a City on Mars” is paradoxical in a sense as it superposes both the managerial representation of a city, that is Zoning, along with the speculative aspect of an extra-terrestrial city.

Dermal Uptake Of Phthalates From Clothing: Comparison Of Model To Human Participant Results, Glenn Morrison, C. J. Weschler, G. Bekö

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this research, we extend a model of transdermal uptake of phthalates to include a layer of clothing. When compared with experimental results, this model better estimates dermal uptake of diethyl phthalate and di-n-butyl phthalate (DnBP) than a previous model. The model predictions are consistent with the observation that previously exposed clothing can increase dermal uptake over that observed in bare-skin participants for the same exposure air concentrations. The model predicts that dermal uptake from clothing of DnBP is a substantial fraction of total uptake from all sources of exposure. For compounds that have high dermal permeability coefficients, dermal uptake …

Modular House Revival, Kevin Chiang, Spencer Dilley, Sarah Dowthwaite, Trevor Houghton, Ryan Lefebvre, Michele Leung, Cameron Lober, Chris Martinez, Katie Mayer

Architectural Engineering

The Modular House, located in Poly Canyon, has seen extensive damage since the last caretaker left nearly ten years ago. To prevent further damage and improve the safety and appeal of the structure, we are proposing a renovation of the existing building that removes the existing cladding and partitions. By the end of Spring Quarter 2017, the Modular House will have a guardrail system replacing the wood paneling on the walls and a new steel composite deck to replace the current flooring system. The structural steel framing system will remain as is.

Design And Simulation A Novel Three-Phase, Five-Level Inverter Topology, Fares Al Juheshi May 2017

Design And Simulation A Novel Three-Phase, Five-Level Inverter Topology, Fares Al Juheshi

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

There is a high integration of renewable energy sources in modern building electrical systems. The main components of these new systems are power electronics switches that inherit their foundations from signal amplifier technologies and then developed to drive high powers. Nowadays, the static converter can connect systems with different electrical characteristics. For instance, choppers connect two DC systems with different voltage levels, whereas inverters transform power from DC to AC with variable amplitude and frequency. Since multilevel inverters offer a better quality of the output waveforms than standard inverters, a novel three-phase, five-level inverter topology is proposed. The goal of …

Exploring The Correlation Between Occupied And Unoccupied Noise Levels In K–12 Classrooms, Laura Caroline Brill May 2017

Exploring The Correlation Between Occupied And Unoccupied Noise Levels In K–12 Classrooms, Laura Caroline Brill

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Students learn in occupied spaces, yet acoustical standards specify recommendations for unoccupied levels. While some studies have quantified the relationship between occupied and background noise levels in classrooms, their definitions of background noise level were often inconsistent with those recommended by the standards. The research presented in this thesis examines the relationship between occupied and unoccupied levels in 110 classrooms in two Midwestern school districts. Acoustic levels were logged for a total of six days in each classroom. Occupied and unoccupied levels were parsed from the logged data using k-means clustering, an unsupervised statistical learning technique. The results from this …

Uncovering The Mystery Of Machu Picchu, Barbara Cardona Apr 2017

Uncovering The Mystery Of Machu Picchu, Barbara Cardona

Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research

If mysteries were ranked, Machu Picchu would be on the top of the list. This Incan site, destination for millions of tourists, archaeologists and researchers each year, is one of the biggest enigmas of Incan culture. Its mesmerizing view has prompted hundreds of unanswered questions about this civilization. Incan culture revolved around cities, built without reference to the world beyond. Although the Incas were incredible architects and inventors, they lack written records, shrouding their culture in mystery for many years. While research has illuminated some facets of Incan culture, a significant question still remains: what purpose did Machu Picchu play …

Experimental And Numerical Investigation Of Flexural Concrete Wall Design Details, Anahid A. Behrouzi, T. Welt, Dawn Lehman, Laura Lowes, J. Lafave, Daniel Kuchma Apr 2017

Experimental And Numerical Investigation Of Flexural Concrete Wall Design Details, Anahid A. Behrouzi, T. Welt, Dawn Lehman, Laura Lowes, J. Lafave, Daniel Kuchma

Architectural Engineering

Reinforced concrete structural walls are common in mid- to high-rise structures in high seismic regions, and are expected to have good strength and ductility characteristics if designed in accordance with ACI 318-14. However, experimental and analytical investigations of reinforced concrete structural walls and isolated boundary element prisms indicate that the existing design provisions may be insufficient to provide ductile, flexure-dominated response under cyclic loading. Walls designed with an ACI compliant boundary element length are susceptible to shear-compression failures below the maximum ACI allowable shear stress of 10Acv√fc’. Also of concern is the frequent use of thinner walls in modern design; …

Numerical Simulations Of Intrusive Gravity Currents Interacting With A Bottom-Mounted Obstacle In A Continuously Stratified Ambient, Jian Zhou, Subhas K. Venayagamoorthy

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this study, the flow dynamics of intrusive gravity currents past a bottom-mounted obstacle were investigated using highly resolved numerical simulations. The propagation dynamics of a classic intrusive gravity current was first simulated in order to validate the numerical model with previous laboratory experiments. A bottom-mounted obstacle with a varying non-dimensional height of D~ = D/ H, where D is the obstacle height and H is the total flow depth, was then added to the problem in order to study the downstream flow pattern of the intrusive gravity current. For short obstacles, the intrusion re-established itself downstream without much distortion. …

How Tonality And Loudness Of Noise Relate To Annoyance And Task Performance” Noise Control Eng. J. 65(2), 71-82., Joonhee Lee, Jennifer M. Francis, Lily M. Wang

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications

Audible tones in noise generated by building mechanical equipment can be a leading cause of complaints from occupants. A number of metrics have been developed to quantify prominence of a tone, but previous work has shown that the impact of a certain tonality appears to vary with the level of the broadband noise signal. More work on how tonal signals of varying tonality, tone frequency and broadband noise levels relate to annoyance and task performance is needed. This paper investigates such relationships between current noise metrics, annoyance and task performance under assorted tonal noise conditions through subjective testing. Participants rated …

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this preliminary study, we have investigated whether dermal uptake of nicotine directly from air or indirectly from clothing can be a meaningful exposure pathway. Two participants wearing only shorts and a third participant wearing clean cotton clothes were exposed to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS), generated by mechanically "smoking" cigarettes, for three hours in a chamber while breathing clean air from head-enveloping hoods. The average nicotine concentration (420 μg/m3) was comparable to the highest levels reported for smoking sections of pubs. Urine samples were collected immediately before exposure and 60-hour post-exposure for bare-skinned participants. For the clothed participant, post-exposure urine …

Lateral Strength And Ductile Behavior Of A Mortise-Tenon Connected Timber Frame, Alexandros Kouromenos Mar 2017

Lateral Strength And Ductile Behavior Of A Mortise-Tenon Connected Timber Frame, Alexandros Kouromenos

Master's Theses

The primary goals of this project were to examine the amount of lateral force resisted by a single-bay mortise-tenon connected timber moment frame, and to introduce ductile behavior into the mortise-tenon connections by adding a steel sleeve around a traditional wood peg. This research aimed to provide proof that traditional timber frames are capable of ductile racking while reliably complying with ASCE 7-10 building code drift speci! cations, implying an increase in the ASCE 7-10 ductility factor (R) for wood frames when used as lateral force resisting elements. A secondary goal was to promote traditional heavy timber framing as a …

Biotransformation Of 2,4-Dinitroanisole By A Fungal Penicillium Sp, Hunter W. Schroer, Kathryn L. Langenfeld, Xueshu Li, Hans Joachim Lehmler, Craig L. Just

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Insensitive munitions explosives are new formulations that are less prone to unintended detonation compared to traditional explosives. While these formulations have safety benefits, the individual constituents, such as 2,4-dinitroanisole (DNAN), have an unknown ecosystem fate with potentially toxic impacts to flora and fauna exposed to DNAN and/or its metabolites. Fungi may be useful in remediation and have been shown to degrade traditional nitroaromatic explosives, such as 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene and 2,4-dinitrotoluene, that are structurally similar to DNAN. In this study, a fungal Penicillium sp., isolated from willow trees and designated strain KH1, was shown to degrade DNAN in solution within 14 days. …

Evaluation Of Out-Of-Plane Wall Anchorage Force Provisions In Buildings With Rigid Walls And Flexible Roof Diaphragms, Maria Koliou, John W. Lawson, Andre Filiatrault, Dominic J. Kelly Feb 2017

Evaluation Of Out-Of-Plane Wall Anchorage Force Provisions In Buildings With Rigid Walls And Flexible Roof Diaphragms, Maria Koliou, John W. Lawson, Andre Filiatrault, Dominic J. Kelly

Architectural Engineering

Heavy concrete and masonry walled buildings with lightweight steel or wood flexible roof diaphragms are a common type of construction in North America. Failures of the out-of-plane wall anchorage to these roof systems and the resulting partial roof collapses during past earthquakes have led to repeated revisions to the seismic design provisions in the U.S. model building codes. However, the force levels considered in the current design provisions have remained largely unchanged since their introduction in the 1997 Uniform Building Code, and these provisions have not been fully tested by strong ground motions in the field. Using a two dimensional …

Roof Diaphragm Distributed Yielding Concept For Improved Seismic Collapse Performance Of Buildings With Rigid Walls/Flexible Roof Diaphragms, Maria Koliou, Andre Filiatrault, D.J. Kelly, John W. Lawson Jan 2017

Roof Diaphragm Distributed Yielding Concept For Improved Seismic Collapse Performance Of Buildings With Rigid Walls/Flexible Roof Diaphragms, Maria Koliou, Andre Filiatrault, D.J. Kelly, John W. Lawson

Architectural Engineering

Buildings with rigid walls and flexible roof diaphragms (RWFD) are a common type of single-story construction in North America, Europe and New Zealand that incorporate rigid in-plane concrete or masonry walls and flexible in-plane wood or steel roof diaphragms. RWFD buildings have shown poor seismic performance during past earthquake events. In particular, it has been observed that the global seismic response is dominated by the response of the roof diaphragm, which is mainly attributed to large in-plane roof displacements that significantly exceed the displacements of in-plane walls. The present study explores the concept of distributed yielding in the flexible roof …

An Alternative Procedure For The Seismic Design Of Buildings With Rigid Walls / Flexible Diaphragms: Fema P-1026, John W. Lawson, Dominic J. Kelly, Maria Koliou, Andre Filiatrault Jan 2017

An Alternative Procedure For The Seismic Design Of Buildings With Rigid Walls / Flexible Diaphragms: Fema P-1026, John W. Lawson, Dominic J. Kelly, Maria Koliou, Andre Filiatrault

Architectural Engineering

Evidence indicates that the dynamic behavior of Rigid Wall - Flexible Diaphragm (RWFD) buildings is dominated by the flexible roof diaphragm’s response instead of the walls’ response, and this is a significant departure from the underlying assumptions of the widely used equivalent lateral static force methods in current building codes. RWFD buildings are common in the Americas and other parts of the world, and incorporate rigid in-plane concrete or masonry walls and flexible in-plane wood or steel roof diaphragms. In an effort to improve the seismic performance of this common building type, the National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS) directed …
