Thinking Outside The Box: New Approaches To Very Large Flexible Diaphragms, John W. Lawson Sep 2007

Thinking Outside The Box: New Approaches To Very Large Flexible Diaphragms, John W. Lawson

Architectural Engineering

This paper discusses the past design practices of flexible diaphragms, the current trend to very large diaphragms, and the new tools available to properly evaluate and engineer these large roof systems. Higher shear demands are accommodated by higher plywood/OSB and steel deck shear capacities accepted by the IBe. A new collective chord technique is presented to more accurately reflect large diaphragm behavior. In addition, these very large diaphragms have significant lateral deflection issues that can now be evaluated in the IBC. The new AF&PA deflection equations for wood diaphragms are presented as well as a technique to compute deflections of …

Round-Robin Testing Of A Dewpoint Potentiameter Versus Filter Paper To Determine Total Suction, Thomas M. Petry, Cheng Ping Jiang

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Expansive clays exhibit high potential for volume change when changes in soil moisture occur. It has been estimated that the annual cost of damage to facilities built on expansive clay in the United States exceeds $9 billion. the use of soil suction measurements to predict potential clay volume changes has shown significant promise, yet the currently utilized method to determine soil suction, the filter paper method, has serious drawbacks. First, the test takes approximately 8 days to complete, making it less than practical for broad use by practicing engineers. Second, and more troublesome, the filter paper test is difficult to …

Foundations For Seismic Loads, Vijay K. Puri, Shamsher Prakash Sep 2007

Foundations For Seismic Loads, Vijay K. Puri, Shamsher Prakash

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Design of foundations in earthquake prone areas needs special considerations. Shallow foundations may experience a reduction in bearing capacity and increase in settlement and tilt due to seismic loading. the reduction in bearing capacity depends on the nature and type of soil and ground acceleration parameters. in the case of piles, the soil-pile behavior under earthquake loading is generally non-linear. the nonlinearity must be accounted for by defining soil-pile stiffness in terms of strain dependent soil modulus. Several behavioral and design aspects of shallow foundations and pile groups subjected to earthquakes have been critically reviewed. Copyright ASCE 2007.

Investigations Of Multi-Channel Auralization Technique For Various Orchestra Arrangements, With Phase-Shifted String Sections, Michelle C Vigeant, Lily M. Wang Sep 2007

Investigations Of Multi-Channel Auralization Technique For Various Orchestra Arrangements, With Phase-Shifted String Sections, Michelle C Vigeant, Lily M. Wang

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications

An orchestra can be simulated in room acoustics computer modelling using a variety of methods, ranging from a single omni-directional source to individual sources of all instruments.  This study utilizes the method of individual sources for each instrument, but with reduced source representation for the string sections.  The anechoic recordings used in this investigation are five-channel recordings, which capture the source directivity of the individual instruments.  For each string section, the individual anechoic recordings were phase shifted several times, up to 23 ms, and combined to create a single recording for use in the simulations.  An orchestra was simulated in …

Scattered Responses From Suspended Reflector Panels With Rounded Edges, Jonathan Rathsam, Lily M. Wang Sep 2007

Scattered Responses From Suspended Reflector Panels With Rounded Edges, Jonathan Rathsam, Lily M. Wang

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications

Sound reflections from most finite surfaces, such as overhead reflector panels, include a component known as edge diffraction. Edge diffraction is the scattered energy required to maintain a continuous sound field despite the discontinuity in acoustical impedance presented by the scatterer. Edge diffraction can interfere with primary scattered energy to produce comb filtering at receiver locations. Several decades ago, the effect of changing the edge profile of loudspeaker boxes was investigated with the goal of producing a smoother frequency response. By rounding the edges of loudspeaker boxes, the edge diffraction could be decreased noticeably [H. F. Olson, J. Aud. Eng. …

Deflection Limits For Tilt-Up Wall Serviceability - The History Behind Changes To Chapter 14 Of Aci 318, John Lawson Sep 2007

Deflection Limits For Tilt-Up Wall Serviceability - The History Behind Changes To Chapter 14 Of Aci 318, John Lawson

Architectural Engineering

Tilt-up construction is one of the most ubiquitous forms of commercial construction in many parts of the country. Thanks to its efficient wall and roof systems, more than 700 million ft2 (65 million m2) of tilt-up buildings were constructed in the U.S. in 2006.1
Tilt-up's current popularity is even more remarkable considering that it wasn't until the 1980s that building codes began to recognize the unique design of slender tilt-up wall panels. In fact, it wasn't until ACI 318-992 was published that the design of slender wall panels was codified on a national level. Of …

Investigations Of Multi-Channel Auralization Technique For Solo Instruments And Orchestra, Michelle C Vigeant, Lily M. Wang, Jens Holger Rindel

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications

Computer modeling of room acoustics is a useful tool in the design of acoustically sensitive spaces and an important outcome from these programs is auralizations.  This study examined the perceived changes in realism and source width when listening to multi-channel auralizations compared to single channel auralizations for both solo instruments and a full orchestra.  The first experiment, which examined subjective judgments of auralizations made from solo instruments, showed that perceived realism increased as the number of channels was increased from one to four to thirteen, while the relationship between source width and number of channels was less clear. In the …

On The Formation And Propagation Of Nonlinear Internal Boluses Across A Shelf Break, Subhas K. Venayagamoorthy, Oliver B. Fringer Apr 2007

On The Formation And Propagation Of Nonlinear Internal Boluses Across A Shelf Break, Subhas K. Venayagamoorthy, Oliver B. Fringer

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

High-resolution two- and three-dimensional numerical simulations are performed of first-mode internal gravity waves interacting with a shelf break in a linearly stratified fluid. The interaction of nonlinear incident waves with the shelf break results in the formation of upslope-surging vortex cores of dense fluid (referred to here as internal boluses) that propagate onto the shelf. This paper primarily focuses on understanding the dynamics of the interaction process with particular emphasis on the formation, structure and propagation of internal boluses on shelf. A possible mechanism is identified for the excitation of vortex cores that are lifted over the shelf break, from …

Reflector Responses: A Comparison Between Odeon’S Modified Ray Tracing Algorithm And A Filtered Boundary Element Method Model, Jonathan Rathsam, Lily M. Wang, Jens Holger Rindel, Claus Lynge Christensen Mar 2007

Reflector Responses: A Comparison Between Odeon’S Modified Ray Tracing Algorithm And A Filtered Boundary Element Method Model, Jonathan Rathsam, Lily M. Wang, Jens Holger Rindel, Claus Lynge Christensen

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications

The biggest challenge for geometrical room acoustic computer models is to capture complex wave phenomena while maintaining the low computational load of the ray tracing algorithm. Special corrections must be added to the ray tracing algorithm to account for wave phenomena such as edge diffraction, which are ignored by classical geometrical acoustics. ODEON, a well-known geometrical computer model, is in the process of upgrading its ray tracing and scattering algorithm. The new algorithm allows users to specify transmission through reflector panel arrays. To aid in the development of ODEON’s new algorithm, its predictions are compared with predictions from a boundary …

The Use Of Thermoelectric Peltiers To Recapture Waste Heat, Navarre Bartz Jan 2007

The Use Of Thermoelectric Peltiers To Recapture Waste Heat, Navarre Bartz

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

Peltier devices are a method of converting differences in temperature into electrical energy. Using data from a supplier of these devices, calculations were made to determine the efficiency of these devices in conjunction with a residential solar hybrid electric system. The initial calculations show efficiencies less than 2% with the temperature differences experienced during the springtime. While this efficiency doesn't sound stellar, taking into account the current efficiency of residential solar cells, this would be an appreciable addition to the power output of a residential solar system.

Soil Suction And Behavior Of Chemically Treated Clays, Thomas M. Petry, Cheng Ping Jiang

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Expansive clay soils have caused significant damage throughout the world. Chemical stabilizing agents have been used to reduce the swell of expansive clay soils, but the effect of chemical treatment on the matric and osmotic suction of soils has not been investigated previously. Two subject soils were chosen to study soil suction and the behavior of chemically treated clay. One soil, with high swell potential, was from Irving, Texas. the other soil, with moderate swell potential, was from Slater, Missouri. Hydrated lime and KIS (a proprietary solution containing potash and ammonium lignosulfonate) were used as chemical stabilizers. Select physical and …

Nondestructive Evaluation Of Rc Structures Strengthened With Frp Laminates Containing Near-Surface Defects In The Form Of Delaminations, Mahmut Ekenel, John J. Myers Jan 2007

Nondestructive Evaluation Of Rc Structures Strengthened With Frp Laminates Containing Near-Surface Defects In The Form Of Delaminations, Mahmut Ekenel, John J. Myers

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites are being utilized in a wide range of application areas in structural rehabilitations because these materials are less affected by corrosive environmental conditions and known to provide longer life with less maintenance. However, there are still some concerns about FRP strengthened reinforced concrete (RC) structures, such as the presence of near-surface defects. Currently limited data exists regarding this issue. the presence of near-surface defects in the form of delaminations between the fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) laminate and concrete substrate can significantly affect the structural integrity and stiffness of the structural section. These defects should be …
