Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Matrix (FRCM) composites can be employed as a valid alternative to Fiber Reinforced Polymers (FRP) composites for strengthening existing reinforced concrete (RC) structures. The weakness of FRCM-concrete joints has been reported to be at the matrix-fiber interface rather than within the concrete substrate, as is usually reported in the case of FRP-concrete joints. The experimental investigations regarding FRCM strengthening available in the literature have been performed by applying the FRCM composite onto a surface that was treated before the application, usually by grinding or sandblasting. However, the role of the substrate characteristics on the failure mechanism of …
Dispute Resolution Under The Principal Irish Forms Of Building Contract, Tony Cunningham
Dispute Resolution Under The Principal Irish Forms Of Building Contract, Tony Cunningham
Other Resources
The construction industry is known to be litigious (Latham, 1994). This is hardly surprising given the industry’s fragmented nature in which project teams comprising an extensive network of employers, designers and constructors are brought together to deliver once-off projects, following which, the organisation is almost always disbanded. The short term objectives of the various groupings are often competing and occasionally incompatible. For example, many employers will wish to minimise costs in developing a project, designers may resist pressures on budgets in order to safeguard their ‘brand’, and the commercial imperative of maximising profit will drive contractors towards charging what the …

Risk Allocation Under The Principal ‘Traditional’ Irish Forms Of Building Contract, Tony Cunningham
Other Resources
Construction projects are risky ventures. Risks are inevitable and cannot be entirely eliminated but they can be transferred through appropriate wording in the clauses of a contract. Construction contracts allocate particular risks between the parties in order to identify who bears the cost if a particular risk comes to pass.
This study examines how contractual risks are allocated to the contracting parties under the Royal Institute of Architects in Ireland Form, 2012 version, where quantities form part of the contract, commonly known as ‘the Yellow Form’, and the Public Works Contract PW CF1 Form v 1.10, 2014 where the design …

Buildings With Rigid Walls And Flexible Roof Diaphragms. I: Evaluation Of Current U.S. Seismic Provisions, Maria Koliou, Andre Filiatrault, Dominic J. Kelly, John W. Lawson
Architectural Engineering
Buildings having rigid walls and flexible roof diaphragms (RWFD) are a type of building construction widely used for light industry in the United States; they incorporate rigid in-plane concrete or masonry walls and flexible in-plane wood, steel, or hybrid roof diaphragms. In this first of two companion papers, the probability of collapse of this type of building designed to current code provisions in the United States, given an MCE earthquake event, is evaluated according to the FEMA P695 methodology for a large set of representative building archetypes. The results of the study indicate that current code provisions for this type …

Buildings With Rigid Walls And Flexible Roof Diaphragms. Ii: Evaluation Of A New Seismic Design Approach Based On Distributed Diaphragm Yielding, Maria Koliou, Andre Filiatrault, Dominic J. Kelly, John W. Lawson
Architectural Engineering
A seismic collapse evaluation study of buildings with rigid walls and flexible roof diaphragms (RWFD) presented in the companion paper indicates that this type of structure, as designed to current seismic design provisions in the United States, does not satisfy FEMA P695 performance criteria for Risk Category II Buildings. The seismic performance of RWFD buildings is often characterized by large deformations and yielding in the roof diaphragm rather than in the vertical elements of the seismic force–resisting system (SFRS). In this paper, a new seismic design approach is proposed to account for flexible roof diaphragm response. The proposed approach relies …

Digital data contributes to an increasingly alienated aspect of our infrastructure. The complex practices of the Internet produce highly specified, engineered objects. Though their forms are ‘optimized,’ their intentions are not: the two primary considerations for the development of the infrastructure of the Internet are energy and security. Each category presents its own deliberations, but both often produce non-architectural, infrastructural elements beyond public visibility. The hidden infrastructure of data storage and mining (the indexing and analysis of data and traffic) produces spaces outside the agency of normative architectural discourse.
The key consideration for the design of the Internet is redundancy, …
A Hybrid Approach For Increasing Baffling Factors In Contact Tanks, Justin J. Kattnig, Subhas K. Venayagamoorthy
A Hybrid Approach For Increasing Baffling Factors In Contact Tanks, Justin J. Kattnig, Subhas K. Venayagamoorthy
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A novel approach using a hybrid combination of internal baffles and industrial packing material is investigated in order to optimize the hydraulic residence time of a 1,500-gal rectangular concrete tank. Hydraulic residence time, which is commonly classified using the baffling factor (BF), was determined from residence time distribution curves obtained using both computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and physical tracer studies. CFD simulations were used to model two scenarios. The first scenario was a base system consisting of an unbaffled concrete tank, and the second scenario was a two-baffle system. Computational simulation results were experimentally validated via tracer studies on …
Estimation On Gibbs Entropy For An Ensemble, Lekhya Sai Sake
Estimation On Gibbs Entropy For An Ensemble, Lekhya Sai Sake
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
In this world of growing technology, any small improvement in the present scenario would create a revolution. One of the popular revolutions in the computer science field is parallel computing. A single parallel execution is not sufficient to see its non-deterministic features, as same execution with the same data at different time would end up with a different path. In order to see how non deterministic a parallel execution can extend up to, creates the need of the ensemble of executions. This project implements a program to estimate the Gibbs Entropy for an ensemble of parallel executions. The goal is …

For this senior project I am seeking to combine my knowledge of Structural Engineering with Construction Management. For this task, I have decided to look at Building Information Modeling (BIM). In this project I investigate the BIM tools Trimble Tekla Structures and Autodesk Navis- works Manage. Tekla is a modeling, fabrication, and design program. Navisworks is a visualiza- tion and Clash Detection tool. For this project I have identiÅied two main goals relating to Navis- works and Tekla:
-
Create content to allow students and professors learn how to use Tekla and Navisworks
-
Determine the capabilities of these softwares, and Åigure …

Architectural Engineering
The goal of this senior project was to come up with a structural-engineering-related schematic design for a roller coaster to be installed in Disneyland called TRON 2.0: The Experience. This involved looking at both design processes that we had already learned through our curriculum as well as researching concepts that were previously foreign to us, namely the dynamic application of loads and the effects of fatigue stresses.
A story was established based on the source material: the TRON movies produced by Walt Disney Studios. Thematic elements from the story were used as the basis for design implications that would become …
Subjective Perception Of Varying Reflection Densities In Room Impulse Responses, Hyun Hong
Subjective Perception Of Varying Reflection Densities In Room Impulse Responses, Hyun Hong
Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Reverberation time (RT) is a metric commonly used to describe room acoustic conditions, but different rooms which have the same reverberation time can have different reflection densities. Much less is known about how humans perceive different reflection densities and how sensitive humans are to changes in reflection density. Previous investigations in the existing literature have studied the upper limit of distinguishable reflection density using artificial impulse responses, but not with more realistic impulse responses simulated in room acoustic software or measured from real rooms. The aim of this dissertation is to investigate methods for quantifying reflection density from measured impulse …
Discomfort Glare From Small, High Luminance Light Sources In Outdoor Nighttime Environments, Yulia I. Tyukhova
Discomfort Glare From Small, High Luminance Light Sources In Outdoor Nighttime Environments, Yulia I. Tyukhova
Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The overarching goal of this research was to examine humans’ subjective and physiological responses to small, high luminance light sources in outdoor nighttime environments. Currently, discomfort glare is rarely calculated in lighting practice (Remaking Cities Institute (RCI) 2011), partly, because it is not known which metric predicts glare most accurately in the given application.
This dissertation describes a parametric experiment evaluating the effects of three glare source luminances (20,000; 205,000; 750,000 cd/m2), two source positions (0°, 10°), two source sizes (10-5, 10-4 sr), and three background luminances (0.03; 0.3; 1 cd/m2) on the …

This thesis explores how subway stations lost their identity as strategic node of connectivity which constructed the prevailing image of New York City. In Civilization and Its Discontents (1930), Sigmund Freud famously compared the human mind to the city of Rome. He argues that both contain strata of memory and history which have accumulated over the years through a messy and ad-hoc process. Like Rome, New York City also has a layered history, albeit not as deep.
This thesis contends that the subway entrance serves as an experiential entre into the unconscious experience of the unknown elements of the past. …
Block Sparse Memory Improved Proportionate Affine Projection Sign Algorithm, J. Liu, S. L. Grant
Block Sparse Memory Improved Proportionate Affine Projection Sign Algorithm, J. Liu, S. L. Grant
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A block sparse memory improved proportionate affine projection sign algorithm (BS-MIP-APSA) is proposed for block sparse system identification under impulsive noise. The new BS-MIP-APSA not only inherits the performance improvement for block-sparse system identification, but also achieves robustness to impulsive noise and the efficiency of the memory improved proportionate affine projection sign algorithm (MIP-APSA). Simulations indicate that it can provide both faster convergence rate and better tracking ability under impulsive interference for block sparse system identification as compared with APSA and MIP-APSA.
Issues Facing Design Professionals Through The Lens Of Two Rain-Induced Roof Collapses, J. W. Lawson, M. E. Parolini
Issues Facing Design Professionals Through The Lens Of Two Rain-Induced Roof Collapses, J. W. Lawson, M. E. Parolini
Architectural Engineering
The drainage of low-sloped roof systems involves multiple design professionals, and often each has a different opinion as to their design responsibility. Roofing issues have been identified as being a number one source of litigation, and rain-induced roof collapses continue to occur with alarming frequency. With the backdrop of several rain-induced roof collapses, this paper illustrates the complexity of assigning design responsibility for drainage systems; and investigates a variety of outcomes associated with the current building code provisions transporting rainwater from large low-sloped roof structures.

This paper presents a case study of how the adoption of BIM-based practices in the AECO industry is being reflected by cultural change in higher education in Ireland. The silo-mentality that has dominated the AECO sector for more than a century has, despite numerous reorganisations, been replicated in the structures of educational institutions, including in Dublin Institute of Technology since the inception of its founding colleges in the late 1800s. Most AECO programmes must include content that is external to the programme’s specific discipline. Through the School structures of the Institute, delivery of such content is known as "service teaching" …

Ireland is undergoing a digital transformation. Some industries particularly in the areas of travel and retail have been radically transformed. However many industries are facing their biggest challenge in their existence already weakened by the economic crisis and constrained by their legacy business, it will be difficult for them to adapt and embrace the new rules dictated by digital change. Irelands design and construction industry is on the cusp of a digital transformation with early adopters now deriving some benefits from a move to a building information modeling (BIM) process. Digital transformation cannot happen unless there are personnel with the …

With the personal interest in tectonic design and kinetic structure arts. This study is aimed to explore the application of interactive technology in the transformation of the structure system in a tectonic architecture design--- to cross the gap between static tectonic design and kinetic structure in small scale. The responsive pavilion will sense and respond to the verification of gravity loads (for occupancy detection) and lights (for solar energy), with the spatial transformation of the entire structure system. As a result, the form of the architecture will follow the function. The responsive pavilion will spatially respond to the varied occupancy …
Radial Strain Behaviors And Stress State Interpretation Of Soil Under Direct Simple Shear, Xin Kang, Yao Cheng, Louis Ge
Radial Strain Behaviors And Stress State Interpretation Of Soil Under Direct Simple Shear, Xin Kang, Yao Cheng, Louis Ge
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Radial strain behaviors and stress state interpretation methods of silica sand consolidated at different K0 values under modified direct simple shear were investigated in this research. Consolidated drained triaxial compression test, direct shear box test, and wire reinforced direct simple shear tests were conducted, and the test results were compared and linked with the modified direct simple shear tests. Based on the observed testing data, simple shear specimens with constant lateral stress exhibited relatively small radial strain during shear, especially under small shear strains. After the peak shear resistance has mobilized, radial strain increased rigorously until the specimen failed. Confining …

Benchmark Problems For Large Strain Consolidation, Patrick J. Fox, Hefu Pu
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Modeling of the one-dimensional consolidation process for soil and other compressible porous media is important for a variety of engineering applications. This paper presents solutions for two benchmark problems for large strain consolidation of a saturated soil layer that can be used to check other analytical and numerical analysis methods. The solutions include effects of vertical strain, soil self-weight, nonlinear constitutive relationships, and changing material properties during the consolidation process. High-accuracy data are presented for each problem and include changes of settlement, void ratio, and excess pore pressure with time.

A Comparison Of The Bond Behavior Of Pbo-Frcm Composites Determined By Double-Lap And Single-Lap Shear Tests, Lesley Sneed, T. D'Antino, C. Carloni, C. Pellegrino
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper presents the results of an investigation on the bond behavior and stress-transfer mechanism of polyparaphenylene benzo isoxazole (PBO) fiber-reinforced cementitious matrix (FRCM) composites bonded to a concrete substrate using double-lap and single-lap shear tests. Results of double-lap shear tests with different composite bonded lengths and widths are presented and compared with those from single-lap shear tests previously reported by the authors. The idealized load response developed from single-lap shear tests is found to characterize the response of the composite in double-lap shear tests, although with a few key differences. With the double-lap shear test, load redistribution among the …

Stable Isotope-Enabled Pathway Elucidation Of 2,4-Dinitroanisole Metabolized By Rhizobium Lichtii, Hunter W. Schroer, Kathryn L. Langenfeld, Xueshu Li, Hans Joachim Lehmler, Craig L. Just
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Recently developed military explosives are safer to handle, but more environmentally mobile, than traditional explosives. The new insensitive munitions, including 2,4-dinitroanisole (DNAN), have been sparsely studied, making the use of bacterial and/or plant-based remediation approaches unfeasible without further information about the transformation of these compounds. To that end, Rhizobium lichtii isolated from willow tree tissues were studied and observed to completely degrade 5 mg L-1 DNAN within 24 h in liquid media with added carbon and nitrogen. The use of DNAN, [13C6] DNAN, and [15N2] DNAN enabled the identification of 11 previously unknown metabolites resulting from sulfation, acetylation, and/or methylation …

Quantifying mixing processes relating to the transport of heat, momentum, and scalar quantities of stably stratified turbulent geophysical flows remains a substantial task. In a stably stratified flow, such as the stable atmospheric boundary layer (SABL), buoyancy forces have a significant impact on the flow characteristics. This study investigates constant and stability-dependent turbulent Prandtl number (Prt) formulations linking the turbulent viscosity (νt) and diffusivity (κt) for modeling applications of boundary layer flows. Numerical simulations of plane Couette flow and pressure-driven channel flow are performed using the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) framework with the standard k-ϵ turbulence model. Results are compared with …

Enhanced Series-Parallel Model For Estimating The Time-Dependent Thermal Conductivity Of Fly Ash Soil Mixtures, Xin Kang, Louis Ge
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
An enhanced series-parallel (S-II) model of one-dimensional conductive heat flow through a unit cell was developed to estimate the time-dependent thermal conductivity of Class C fly ash stabilized soils. The unit cell is composed of three separate heat flow paths: a continuous path through solid contacts (soil contacts, fly ash contacts, and soil fly ash contacts) in parallel arrangement, a series-parallel path of solids in a series arrangement with a parallel arranged path of solid-miniscule pores (miniscule portion of solid water and miniscule portion of solid air), and a continuous path through water and air in parallel arrangement. The solid-miniscule …

Distributed Yielding Concept For Improved Seismic Collapse Performance Of Rigid Wall-Flexible Diaphragm Buildings, Maria Koliou, Andre Filiatrault, Dominic J. Kelly, John W. Lawson
Distributed Yielding Concept For Improved Seismic Collapse Performance Of Rigid Wall-Flexible Diaphragm Buildings, Maria Koliou, Andre Filiatrault, Dominic J. Kelly, John W. Lawson
Architectural Engineering
Rigid wall-flexible diaphragm (RWFD) buildings are a common type of single-story construction in North America, Europe, and New Zealand that incorporate rigid in-plane concrete or masonry walls and flexible in-plane wood, steel, or hybrid roof diaphragms. RWFD buildings have shown poor seismic performance during past earthquake events. In particular, it has been observed that the global seismic response is dominated by the response of the diaphragm, which is mainly attributed to large in-plane diaphragm displacements that significantly exceed the displacements of in-plane walls. In this study, the concept of distributed yielding in the flexible diaphragm by weakening certain intermediate diaphragm …

BIM Technologies and Process are steadily increasing in the design and construction industry. The amount of undergraduate courses delivering BIM based applied and theory courses is also on the rise. These students will be entering a job market where their skillsets in digital modelling and collaborative practice will be in demand. However, existing AEC (architectural, engineering, construction) professionals are recognising the changes happening in the industry. Each domain is influenced and challenged by BIM. The traditional process and workflows will change as BIM adoption grows. Tobin [1] states the long-term impact of any innovation is often not understood when it …

My sculpture “Pigs Feet” has literal foundations upon casts of live pig’s feet. I locally sourced the pig’s feet before casting them. My sculpture makes use of a once cutting edge casting technology, alginate. Alginate molds were once the standard in dentistry. Alginate is an appealing casting material as it is refined from brown seaweeds, is both food and skin safe, it is suitable for educators, for artists and engineers alike.
