Hidden Systems, Samuel Choi
Hidden Systems, Samuel Choi
Masters Theses
Across buildings and cities, moisture is managed, concealed, and discharged through convoluted systems of containment. Still, water ultimately resists this framework. It reveals itself as leaks, puddles, condensation—moments typically understood as technical failure. Hidden Systems reframes these conditions as architectural knowledge, one that becomes evidence of water’s material capacity, limits of infrastructure, and a record of time.
NYC is constructed on, powered by, and profiting from water. Although it hosts a robust network, seepages disrupt control, allowing systems to be traced across scales. As pipes expand, contract, and freeze, the project unfolds seasonally, moving through water’s three states: solid, liquid, …

The Design Studio Dilemma The “Slicing Method”, Yasser Osman El Gammal Associate Professor Dr.
Journal of Engineering Research
The design studio presents a multifaceted challenge due to the absence of a direct teaching approach, relying heavily on the teacher's expertise, design acumen, and pace. Furthermore, much of the existing literature on design studio methods tends to be philosophical or opinion-based, lacking practical solutions for ongoing challenges in this domain. While it's easy for scholars to theorize, offering comprehensive procedures to address design studio issues proves considerably more difficult. There's no unanimous agreement on the topic; most design studio models are based on individual opinions as scholars and practitioners view the topic from different angles, developing their own perspectives. …

Peter Zumthor said, "Architecture is a service, a process, a way of building and leaving the world a little better for our presence." The question becomes, "How can we use lighting in architectural designs to create impactful experiences for those in the space?" My thesis explores how we design spaces and what strategies can be implemented to influence the viewers’ perception. We are shaped …
Spatial Hearing In Simulated Reverberant Classroom Environments, Gabriel Seth Evan Weeldreyer
Spatial Hearing In Simulated Reverberant Classroom Environments, Gabriel Seth Evan Weeldreyer
Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Spatial hearing provides access to auditory spatial cues that promote speech perception in noisy listening situations. However, reverberation degrades auditory spatial cues and limits listeners’ ability to utilize these cues for segregating target speech from competing babble. Hence, spatial unmasking—an intelligibility benefit from a spatial separation between a target and masker—is reduced in reverberant environments as compared to free field. This work tests the hypothesis that interaural decorrelation, the result of increasing reverberation, will broaden the perceived auditory source width with a cascading effect of reduced auditory spatial acuity and subsequently poorer spatial unmasking. To understand the perceptual consequences of …
