Genetic Algorithm Theory In Simulation Programs As A Tool For Improving The Environmental Performance Of Office Buildings, Somaia Mohamed Arafa, Esraa Mohamed Elazab, Nanees Abd Elhamid Elsayyad

Mansoura Engineering Journal

Globally, a large proportion of a building's energy is consumed to achieve thermal comfort, as promoting energy efficiency and environmental sustainability of buildings is an important global goal. Therefore, the new building regulations are geared explicitly toward energy-saving projects. However, there are usually many competitive priorities, such as maximizing energy use in office buildings, leading to the complex multi-objective optimization topic. The main objective of this research was to reduce the energy consumed for cooling load in the office buildings in the city of Cairo, which is located in a hot desert climate. This was achieved by optimizing ten different …

The continuous increase in the building ratio to green areas led to disappearing green spaces, and the vertical and horizontal expansion of dwellings as an urgent demand in cities led to various environmental, social, and economic risks. Hence, the research aims to facilitate the application of green roofs for their positive role in treating these risks and improving the performance of dwelling projects and all buildings according to the climate and local conditions. Therefore, the study addressed the history, concept, and significance of green roofs, besides their benefits on architectural and urban levels, according to the three sustainability pillars and …

Reconceptualizing Mies' Glass House, Araceli Avelar, Armando Castaneda Jr, Madison Lam, Ignatius Malari, Alejo Favero, Augusta Orlauskaite, Ella Gleason Jun 2021

Reconceptualizing Mies' Glass House, Araceli Avelar, Armando Castaneda Jr, Madison Lam, Ignatius Malari, Alejo Favero, Augusta Orlauskaite, Ella Gleason

Architectural Engineering

Our team used the glass house studio to explore class stratification, particularly using the glass as a reflection of class dichotomy in our society. The glass and Miesian design approach glorifies the clean cut, picture-perfect utopia only accessible to the wealthy few. But reality proves that there is more to this. As architects and engineers, we should strive to create environments that may uphold our values of equity and diversity and ultimately serve all sectors of society.

The Project Management Of Investigating Dowel Laminated Timber, Sophia D. Looney, Bryan U. Garcia, Reiley A. Akkari

Architectural Engineering

During the Winter Quarter of 2020, three Architectural Engineering students investigated a new type of timber product, dowel laminated timber, for their senior project. Dowel laminated timber (DLT) is a specialty product typically associated with sustainable design and is a form of mass timber. The three students had little knowledge about mass timber outside of a timber design course; their knowledge was primarily in wood framing design. Therefore, the topic was chosen because dowel laminated timber is a topic that holds a large learning opportunity not only for the students but also for the profession. The purpose of the senior …
