Increasing Drift Capacity Of Non-Ductile Concrete Shear Walls Through Confinement With Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Application, Andrew Duong, Sophia Maglabe, Sheyna Rongong
Increasing Drift Capacity Of Non-Ductile Concrete Shear Walls Through Confinement With Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Application, Andrew Duong, Sophia Maglabe, Sheyna Rongong
Architectural Engineering: Graduate Reports
The seismic response and laboratory testing of pre-1980s reinforced concrete (RC) shear walls commonly exhibit undesirable concrete crushing and rebar buckling in the wall end-zones leading to a flexural compressive failure. The lack of ductility of these walls is attributed to low reinforcement ratios and absence of special boundary elements (SBE) as required by modern design code. Thus, the authors are proposing a fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) retrofit method to provide confinement to the end-zones of pre-1980s walls equivalent to that of an SBE. Current industry applications of FRP have largely been for shear strengthening of RC beams, columns, and …

Investigating The Effect Of Active Living Wall On Indoor Air Quality And Energy Consumption: Case Study In Uaeu Closed Offices, Atina Mohsen Ghunaim
Theses
Extreme hot climates can significantly affect Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) and ventilation, resulting in higher energy demands. Numerous studies have demonstrated that outdoor greening, such as trees and landscaped areas, can reduce a building’s energy consumption. However, less research has been conducted on the impact of indoor vegetation on energy use and air quality. Indoor vegetation decreases Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) concentration by absorbing CO₂ and releasing oxygen (O₂), while the evapotranspiration process further enhances (IAQ) and reduces energy expenditure. The United Arab Emirates has dry arid climate and summers with high humidity levels, causing individuals to stay longer indoors, which …

Barriers To The Adoption Of Cross Laminated Timber For Mid-Rise Residential Buildings In Uae, Sabika Nasrim Pilathottathil
Theses
Buildings consume about 40% of the total annual energy produced globally, with significant energy usage across different life cycle stages, including construction and operational phases. The energy associated with the construction of buildings is substantial due to the energy required for the manufacture of materials and products. This underscores the need for stakeholders in the building industry to find construction materials and systems with low embodied energy. In the pursuit of low-energy materials, massive timber products, such as cross-laminated timber (CLT), are gaining popularity in mid-rise buildings around the world. The development of CLT, which boasts excellent load-carrying capabilities, has …

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Energetics of mode-1 internal waves interacting with topographic ridges are investigated using high-resolution two-dimensional simulations at spatial scales of m that span between classical laboratory-scale (m) and field-scale simulations (m). This paper focuses on the energetics of wave-Topography interaction, with emphasis on systematically examining the partitioning of the incident wave energy as a function of wave forcing and topographic parameters. Partitioning of energy into the transmitted, reflected and dissipated components is quantified as a function of wave Froude number (velocity amplitude of forcing and internal wave celerity), slope criticality, where topographic slope and wave characteristic slope, and the ratio of …

It has recently been found that magnesium potassium phosphate cement (MKPC) paste coating applied on the surface of steel reinforcement can effectively retard the onset of corrosion and suppress corrosion reactions. However, the fast-setting nature of MKPC—which is a merit in repair—can be problematic in a practical engineering process of coating the steel reinforcement with MKPC paste. To address this problem, boric acid (H3BO3) was added as a retarder in an MKPC formulation to prolong the setting time. This work investigated the impact of boric acid (at 5% by weight of MgO) on the anti-corrosion performance …

Use Of Building Information Modeling (Bim) In The Management Of Construction Sector In Egypt, Asmaa Said Khalifa, Eman Attia, Hesham Awad
Journal of Engineering Research
Purpose – The application of Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology in Egypt is hindered by inadequacies or insufficient experience, as only a handful of companies and institutions are able to create three-dimensional models using this technology. Additionally, the majority of architectural education curricula do not fully incorporate BIM. The majority of Egyptian graduates in the fields of architecture, construction, and engineering lack the necessary knowledge or expertise to use BIM technology because universities in Egypt primarily focus on teaching CAD technology rather than BIM technology. This may be because BIM technology is still relatively new or because there aren't many …

On The Turbulent Viscosity Parameter Cμ In The K–Ε Model, Harshit Mishra, Subhas Karan Venayagamoorthy
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) models depend on empirical constants to close the Reynolds stress terms. The empirical constants were obtained using experiments conducted at low Reynolds numbers several decades ago. In this paper, we revisit the turbulent viscosity parameter Cμ, based on the stress–intensity ratio c2 = |uw|/k. Here, |uw| and k are the absolute values of the Reynolds stress and turbulent kinetic energy, respectively. Through a priori comparisons, we find that the currently accepted value of Cμ = 0.09 does not agree with the latest direct numerical simulation (DNS) and experimental datasets of wall-bounded turbulent planar flows. Therefore, …
