Attracting Fdi: The Chilean Government's Role Promoting Renewable Energy, 2013 Rutgers University - Newark
Attracting Fdi: The Chilean Government's Role Promoting Renewable Energy, Kyle Herman
Dr. Kyle S. Herman
The development and implementation of renewable energy power plants is important for Chile in order to increase energy security, supply remote mines with electricity, and eventually decrease energy costs. The Chilean government has promoted renewable energy and attracted Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) to develop large-scale renewable energy projects. However, the policies cannot sufficiently attract FDI in unproven renewable energies such as Concentrated Solar Power, though it is proven elsewhere. This paper examines the Chilean government’s renewable energy policies, related government agencies, and the extent that these provide a stable backdrop for FDI in large-scale renewable energy projects. Following that summary, …

Twitter Adoption And Use By Smes: An Empirical Study, 2013 University of Wollongong
Twitter Adoption And Use By Smes: An Empirical Study, S. F. Wamba, Lemuria D. Carter
Dr Samuel Fosso Wamba
Social media tools are used by firms to create and capture business value. In this study, we synthesize emerging literature on social commerce, social media, and the diffusion of innovation to identify the role that organizational, managerial and environmental characteristics of SMEs play in the adoption of Twitter. To test the model, we administered a survey to 453 SME mangers from the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and India. The results of logistic hierarchical regression indicate that firm innovativeness, age and geographic location have a significant impact on Twitter adoption by SMEs. Implications for research and practice are discussed.
Digital Device Lending In Libraries, 2013 California State University - San Bernardino
Digital Device Lending In Libraries, Jonathan M. Smith
Library Faculty Publications & Presentations
California State University, San Bernardino launched its’ first ever library laptop lending program in the fall of 2012. During research into policy creation and technical implementation questions of a more general nature emerged. Is the need for library provided laptops declining? Are library provided tablet computers such as iPads replacing laptops? Are libraries providing devices to access eBooks? This session will present two case studies at CSU, San Bernardino, and the preliminary results of a survey into digital device lending by libraries. The first case study reports on the newly launched laptop lending program. The second case study reports on …

Work System Theory: Overview Of Core Concepts, Extensions, And Challenges For The Future, Steven Alter
Business Analytics and Information Systems
This paper presents a current, accessible, and overarching view of work system theory. WST is the core of an integrated body of theory that emerged from a long-term research project to develop a systems analysis and design method for business professionals called the work system method (WSM). After discussing WST’s basic premises and its two central frameworks, this paper summarizes the relationship between WST and WSM. It shows how experience with early versions of WSM led to three extensions of WST that addressed limitations-in-use in one of the central frameworks in WST. After comparisons with related theories, this paper closes …

Step By Step: The Benefits Of Stage-Based R&D Licensing Contracts, 2013 Singapore Management University
Step By Step: The Benefits Of Stage-Based R&D Licensing Contracts, Pascale Crama, Bert De Reyck, Zeger Degraeve
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
We examine how a licensor can optimally design licensing contracts for multi-phase R&D projects when he does not know the licensee’s project valuation, leading to adverse selection, and cannot enforce the licensee’s effort level, resulting in moral hazard. We focus on the effect of the phased nature typical of such projects, and compare single-phase and multi-phase contracts. We determine the optimal values for the upfront payment, milestone payments and royalties, and the optimal timing for outlicensing. Including multiple milestones and accompanying payments can be an effective way of discriminating between licensees holding different valuations, without having to manipulate the royalty …
Chilean Renewable Energy Investment Potential With Technology Transfer, 2013 Rutgers University - Newark
Chilean Renewable Energy Investment Potential With Technology Transfer, Kyle Herman
Dr. Kyle S. Herman
For potential for investment in Chilean renewable energy investment is promising. After the Chicago boys effectively transformed the Chilean economy into a haven for FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) during the 1980’s, government laws have aligned definitively with neo-liberal policy—in other words, open markets, incentives for investors, public-private partnerships and consistent injections of capital into its financial markets. This article explore these components and highlights investment potential and offers policy advice.

Q&A Platforms Evaluated Using Butler University Q&A Intelligence Index, Trent Ritzenthaler, Richard Fetter, Ginger Lippert
Scholarship and Professional Work - Business
A new study using the Butler University Q&A Intelligence Index measures how various mobile Q&A platforms deliver quality, accurate answers in a timely manner to a broad variety of questions. Based on the results of our analysis, ChaCha led all Q&A platforms on mobile devices.
Results of the study are based upon review of a large set of responses from each of the major Q&A platforms, coupled with a comparison of disparate Q&A platforms that serve answers in different ways. Our methodology included the creation of a new metric, termed the Butler University Q&A Intelligence Index, which measures the likelihood …

Are Disaster Early Warnings Effective?, Kerri Worthington, Katina Michael, Peter Johnson, Paul Barnes
Professor Katina Michael
Australia's summer is traditionally a time of heightened preparation for natural disasters, with cyclones and floods menacing the north and bushfires a constant threat in the south. And the prospect of more frequent, and more intense, disasters thanks to climate change has brought the need for an effective early warning system to the forefront of policy-making. Technological advances and improved telecommunication systems have raised expectations that warning of disasters will come early enough to keep people safe. But are those expectations too high? Kerri Worthington reports. Increasingly, the world's governments -- and their citizens -- rely on technology-based early warning …

Information Systems and Operations Management: Faculty Publications & Other Works
Non-profit organizations like the Meals on Wheels (MOW) association of America prepare and deliver meals, typically daily, to approximately one million homebound citizens in the United States alone. However, many MOW agencies are facing a steadily increasing number of clients requesting meal service without an increase in resources (either financial or human). One strategy for accommodating these requests is to deliver multiple (frozen) meals at a time and thus make fewer delivers. However, many of the stakeholders (funders, volunteers, meal recipients) value the relationships that are developed by having a client receive daily deliveries from the same volunteer. Further, meal …
