This course aims to increase students' understanding of indecision and how to confront it. The class provides insight into how the fear of the unknown holds people back from making decisions and about understanding one's values as a means to combat indecision. Students and teachers alike explore instances of indecision and evaluate their own impulses & thought processes by reflecting on the deeper reasons for their choices. Students will increase their comfort level of asking themselves and their peers questions about the values that guide them and, in doing so, strengthen their relationships with themselves and others.

Although recent studies report a positive relationship between board diversity and firms' invention output, less is known about the mechanisms by which they operate, given that boards are typically far removed from on-the-ground invention activities. Drawing from research on interfaces and social information processing, we propose a theory of diversity cascades across the organizational hierarchy. Specifically, we posit that board diversity has a positive––albeit indirect––influence on firms' invention output. This relationship is mediated by the diversity of top management teams and inventor diversity, as board diversity cascades from the top to lower ranks of an organization. This indirect effect is …

Violence among young men in the United States has escalated in recent years, leading to two contrasting perspectives of young men—either as (a) agentic aggressors or (b) by-products of societal shifts that have caused disadvantage. The first perspective characterizes men as entitled and reactionary, prone to aggression when their societal expectations are unmet. This view aligns with the frustration-aggression hypothesis in which unmet desires lead to hostile behaviors, particularly among individuals who perceive a loss of status and significance. Despite a growing interest in understanding how board diversity shapes firms’ innovation, findings about the impact of board diversity have remained mixed. In this paper, we conceptualize board diversity as two forms – deep-level and surface-level – and find that these two forms of board diversity have opposing effects on a firm's innovation. We also theorize how formal and informal social structures can strengthen the positive effect of deep-level diversity yet simultaneously weaken the negative impact of surface-level diversity. In 2018, the U.S. government levied tariffs affecting more than $250 billion of Chinese products. As a result, many American buyers began turning to alternative suppliers to avoid the significant new costs associated with purchasing from China. Recent research found that transactions between U.S. buyers and Chinese suppliers fell by more than 18% immediately following the start of the trade war. However, the study also found that not all companies were affected equally: Chinese firms that were more innovative or more socially responsible were more likely to retain their U.S. buyers, while buyers were more likely to distance themselves from …

In studies of collective decision-making, the problem of allocating indivisible items fairly and efficiently is widely acknowledged as particularly challenging. Our study assesses various algorithms for finding balanced allocations based on their ability to achieve desirable properties such as envy-freeness, Pareto-optimality, maximin, maximum Borda sum, and Borda maximin.

Two players with additive preferences allocate an even number of indivisible items, given only each other's strict preference ordering. The algorithms under study include both naive and sophisticated versions of Alternating selection, bottom-up Alternating selection (or Alternating rejection), Zigzag selection, bottom-up Zigzag alternation, and fallback bargaining. The feasible option to accelerate productivity growth for a country is not only tangible capital (labor and capital) but also intangible capital such as innovation and digitalization. This study elucidates the pivotal determinants of industry-university research collaboration within the chemical industry and delineates its operational modalities, which can offer valuable insights for pertinent theoretical research and practical applications. By employing grounded theory, an in-depth qualitative analysis of several collaborative cases between chemical enterprises and higher education institutions was conducted, which culminated in the construction of a theoretical model for industry–university research collaboration. The findings reveal that the government plays a significant intermediary role in industry–university partnerships by facilitating the smooth progression and commercialization of collaborative endeavors through policy support, financial subsidies, and performance evaluation.

Based on the higher-order theoretical perspective, this study explores the nonlinear influence mechanism of CEO value maximization tendency on corporate litigation risk and its boundary conditions. Based on the survey data of 225 CEOs in the Chinese context, it is found that CEO value maximization has a significant U-shaped relationship with corporate litigation risk, which indicates that moderate value pursuit can reduce litigation risk, but excessive pursuit will increase the possibility of risk, verifying the “dual governance effect”. Environmental uncertainty, redundant resources and CEO tenure moderated the U-shaped relationship between CEO value maximization and corporate litigation risk.

The manuscript investigates whether the individual personality trait, Fear of Missing Out (FOMO)—typically considered negative—influences the willingness of individuals to contribute to Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs), a phenomenon that emerged after the blockchain revolution. We conducted both qualitative and quantitative work in this space and present the results of an international survey, including a conjoint experiment. Theoretically, we anchor our study in signaling theory and propose that signal valence (the positive or negative interpretation of a signal) can diverge from signal intent. Higher education faces two currents - declining social capital support and the post-industrial transition. Both impact the academy and its students. The associated challenges are discussed as engagement opportunities for the academy in applied disciplines. Also, the instructional value of faculty industry experience (IE) is defined as an attribute of social capital. It fosters student engagement while building an experiential learning bridge from the classroom to the workplace. A composite case based on faculty social capital backgrounds illustrates how faculty IE augments program development, academic rigor, student readiness, research creativity, industry linkages, and community impact.
