Experience has been accepted as a separate market offering that is increasingly being utilized by various businesses. Consequently, there is a growing need to understand the phenomenon of commercial experiences, their role in various market contexts, and the reasons of consumers’ interest in them. It is also crucial to understand the ways the consumers derive value from marketplace experiences. Yet, it would be misleading to assume that all experiences have the same significance for consumers, and consumers derive high level of value from every experience in the market. Over the last twenty years, sponsorship has been used very widely as an important marketing tool that enhances corporate image. Since it has proven to be effective in creating positive perceptions of the company, many marketers have sponsored a variety of consumer-related activities. However, sponsorship has also been criticized as it can be related to ambush marketing and excessive commercialism which trigger negative consumer responses. Unlike the existing study on the sponsorship marketing, this study intends to investigate its negative effects. The study was conducted based on the persuasion knowledge model which was proposed by Fristed and Wright (1994) and …

In recent years, a new way of differentiating product design has emerged ― better known as ``masterpiece marketing,`` this is a strategy where famous art pieces are borrowed on to product designs. Because the recent trends of well-being and LOHAS have encouraged the consumers` desires to enjoy culture and live a more opulent lifestyle, famous and notable paintings have grown to be more of "approachable masterpieces" to the public. As a strategy intended to develop a new consumerism, while still prioritizing customers` values and their satisfaction, companies have been drawn to this new type of marketing. The current consumption society …

Customers today look not only at the product, but also at value - not just economic value, but also, the social, environmental and ethical merits behind every purchase. For companies, particularly small to medium sized enterprises, simply hawking products will not cut it anymore, says marketing expert Gaurav Bhalla. Speaking at a Singapore Management University graduation ceremony, Bhalla shares his thoughts on the role of 'marketing' in attracting and retaining today's sophisticated consumers.

With a tip of the hat to names like Michael Fay, Oliver Fricker and Wrigley's, Singapore’s international brand image, as viewed through Western lenses, may be that of a harsh nanny state. But of course, recent megaprojects and events are starting to change perceptions. Yet, even with new coats of polish on an enhanced cosmopolitan brand, blemishes from the past remain – scars that are better left unpicked, says author Koh Buck Song at a Singapore Management University talk.

Calling Bulls**T On The Lanham Act: The 2(A) Bar For Immoral, Scandalous, And Disparaging Marks, Megan M. Carpenter, Kathryn T. Murphy
Law Faculty Scholarship
As the Lanham Act approaches the age of 65, it is a good time to take stock of its application to, and place within, the object and purpose of trademark law. Trademark law seeks to promote fair competition by reducing consumer search costs and preventing confusion in the minds of consumers as to the source of goods and services. However, Section 2(a) of the Lanham Act prevents registration of marks that are “immoral,” “scandalous,” “disparaging,” “deceptive,” or which “create a false association” with persons, institutions, beliefs, or national symbols. The 2(a) bar expands trademark law well beyond its basic goals. …

Just prior to becoming IMSA’s second President in 2007, I served on IMSA’s Strategic Planning Team. The plan we developed was big and bold, and when first presented, there was some concern that it would collapse under its own size. However, we dreamed big and intended to demonstrate that we could, to paraphrase Walt Disney, both dream it and do it! In my first year as President, I was determined that our plan would become a dynamic, actionable document that would make an enduring difference. Four years later, I am proud to say that due in large part to the …

This paper examines the various loyalty program strategies and design elements utilized within the hospitality industry and evaluates the implications of the various strategies on establishing and fostering loyalty among consumers within a hyper competitive industry. In order to maintain competitive parity, many programs have constantly lowered reward thresholds and increased program offerings, making such programs very costly and with little direct evaluation in their ability to stimulate true loyalty. In a society bombarded by loyalty programs in almost all industries, consumers are becoming very savvy in comparing their personal rewards to the effort and inconveniences incurred by enrolling. The …
