Consumers’ ratings of products are ubiquitous in the online marketplace (e.g., Amazon; Yelp). The rating scales provided by online businesses typically comprise a set of stars that appear in the form of linear scales. Consumers looking to purchase a certain product likely rely on product ratings based on these rating scales. Although past research confirms the intuitive expectation that a higher star rating for a product elicits more favorable responses from consumers, there is a paucity of research related to effects of the properties of the scales themselves on consumers’ psychology. JOHNSON CITY The Academic Health Sciences Center at East Tennessee State University held a ceremonial groundbreaking Thursday that officially kicked off a multi-million-dollar renovation project intended to create a headquarters for interprofessional education and research at the institution.

Through the project, Building 60 on the Mountain Home Veterans Affairs campus will be transformed from the VAs former Quartermasters Storehouse and fire station into ETSUs Interprofessional Education and Research Center. The state-of-the-art educational facility will include simulation labs, research space, classrooms, student study space and more.

Organizations in the public sector in Qatar have a reputation for delivering inefficient services. Leaders lack an understanding of motivational factors affecting public sector employee performance. The purpose of this correlational research was to examine the relationship between leadership styles and employee motivation in public companies in Qatar. The independent variables were the transformational, transactional, and passive-avoidant leadership styles. The dependent variable was employee motivation. The moderator variables were employee age and salary. A sample of 92 employees from 4 public sector organizations in Qatar responded to the online survey. Social media has changed the way businesses relate to their customers. Since the beginning of social media, traditional methods of communicating with customers have begun to decline. The purpose of this multicase study was to determine the strategies of 5 owners of small restaurant businesses in Western North Carolina who successfully used social media marketing for 1 year or more. Rogers's diffusion of innovation theory was the conceptual framework for this study. Brandi Dahl, PharmD, is the newest faculty member in Pharmacy Practice. Originally from Oxford, Kansas, she recently completed her PGY2 Pharmacotherapy Specialty Residency at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Pharmacy (TTUHSC SOP) and Northwest Texas Hospital in Amarillo, Texas. Dahl received her Doctor of Pharmacy from TTUHSC SOP in May of 2017. She is actively involved in the American College of Clinical Pharmacy, TTUHSC SOP Alumni Association, and American Society of Health-System Pharmacists at both a state and local level. Originally from the Pratt Manhattan Gallery in New York, “A New Subjectivity” features female artists Gina Beavers, Katherine Bernhardt, Katherine Bradford, Jackie Gendel, Liz Markus, and Rose Wylie. Cormark International, (Weaverville, NC) importers of fine exotic hardwoods, is a 27-year-old South African based, family owned business with strong ties in the African lumber industry hosted INTD sophomore students last weekend.  Jason talked to students about sustainable foresting practices and importing woods from all over the world.  A particular interesting example was how a log is selected for sustainable harvesting, whole logs milled and kept together(shown), imported in the USA, and finally dried in Cormark’s kilns before being sold.  Thank you Jason for an incredible tour of your business and its commitment to sustainable practices.

One important aspect that drives most design decisions is cost.  Learning how to estimate those costs early in the design process is critical to completing a successful design.  Dr. Kellogg, ETSU’s Construction Engineering Program Coordinator, discussed how to use R.S. Means Books with junior design students.  RS Means show the typical costs and materials needed for a particular type of construction.  Students learned how to estimate costs and will use that knowledge on their next project.

In their last studio at ETSU, senior design students presented their projects on how design can address a social issue. This semester long project included research papers, multiple presentations using various types of delivery methods (Skype, PowerPoint and large presentation boards - shown). All during the semester they worked with regional professional mentors who works with them each week. Topics included homelessness, Greek life center, and social artistry.
