JOHNSON CITY (May 17, 2021) – Twelve cadets in the Army ROTC Program at East Tennessee State University have taken the oath of office and were commissioned as second lieutenants. The new officers will serve in various branches of the United States Army.

Maj. Gen. Leslie A. (May 13, 2021) Cori Crocker is part of the growing and supportive Returned Peace Corps Volunteer (RPCV) community at East Tennessee State University’s College of Public Health.

Originally from Knoxville, Tennessee, Crocker majored in marine science and minored in French at the University of South Carolina. When she graduated, she began looking for opportunities that married these two interests and decided to join the Peace Corps as a secondary-education volunteer in the West African country of Guinea.

JOHNSON CITY (May 11, 2021) – Two faculty members and a student from the East Tennessee State University Department of Rehabilitative Sciences Dietetics Program have received honors from the Tennessee Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (TAND), state affiliate for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

• Dr. Whitney Bignell, assistant professor of Rehabilitative Sciences, was recognized as “Outstanding Dietetic Educator of the Year.”
• Dr. Elizabeth Hall, adjunct Rehabilitative Sciences assistant professor, was awarded “Emerging Dietetic Leader.”

The following students were commissioned as captains in the May 6 ceremony, just a few hours before receiving their diplomas and doctoral hoods from Quillen College of Medicine:

• Joshua Coleman, of Cleveland, Tenn., U.S. Navy. He will complete his residency in anesthesiology at Vanderbilt University.

JOHNSON CITY (May 6, 2021) – Seventy-three medical students received their doctoral hoods and took the Hippocratic Oath as new physicians at East Tennessee State University’s Quillen College of Medicine Commencement ceremony held on Thursday, May 6.

The Class of 2021 is Quillen’s 40th graduating class. Dr. William Block, a 1992 alumnus who now serves as ETSU vice president for clinical affairs and dean of Quillen College of Medicine, presided at the ceremony, which was held in-person at the ETSU Ballad Health Athletic Center (Mini Dome).

The number of predatory honor societies continues to rise, with organizations asking students to pay a membership fee while offering virtually no benefit. The Association of College Honor Societies (ACHS), an accreditation body, combats this by evaluating societies on numerous criteria. This project aimed to investigate the structure of accredited honor societies to see their similarities. Areas where accredited societies differed from ACHS guidelines were also discovered. This research was conducted using content analysis of a sample of accredited honor societies. The COVID-19 pandemic of 2020–2021 has impacted every Utahn in significant ways. Yet, research has found that women have been even more negatively impacted than men. For example, nearly 3 million American women have left the labor force over the past year and not returned. In Utah, from 2019 to 2020, jobs held by women declined at more than twice the rate of men. In addition, many studies have found that, for American couples, there continue to be gender gaps in household responsibilities even if both individuals work full-time. The certification is designed to prepare students to utilize knowledge of genetics, genomics, epigenetics, pharmacogenetics, genetic testing and genetic counseling in their practice. It will also provide knowledge of how genetic makeup and environment may contribute to the development of common inherited disorders.
