JOHNSON CITY – The Gray Fossil Site, overseen by the Don Sundquist Center of Excellence in Paleontology at East Tennessee State University, preserves a five-million-year-old ecosystem once home to rhinos, mastodons, red pandas and many more extinct species. Among the most common fossil animals found at the site are turtles.


Researchers have now identified an extinct species of painted turtle, one that is entirely new to science and unique to the Northeast Tennessee site. Scientists named it Chrysemys corniculata, or the “horned painted turtle.” The name comes from a conspicuous pair of pointy projections on the front edge of …

While she didn’t know it at the time, the yard work she did for the elderly and disabled in her hometown and planting trees was the start of her journey toward a career in public health. Summer service trips with her church involving home repairs and other tasks led to a job for three summers with Group Cares, during which she traveled the country and worked on projects in 38 states.

Hiding In Plain Sight: How Imperfect Ingredient Transformation Impact Consumer Preference For Rescue-Based Food, Anna De Visser-Amundson, John Peloza, Mirella Kleijnen, Aylin Aydinli

Rescue-based food (RBF) – food products often made from ingredients that are not able to be sold due to aesthetic imperfections – represent an opportunity to reduce food waste. However, despite consumers’ desire to act prosocially, preference for such products is negatively impacted by the perception that the imperfect ingredients reduce the quality of RBF. Across two studies, one field study and one controlled experiment, we demonstrate that a higher level of ingredients transformation can positively impact demand for RBF. Dark design (also known as deceptive design; Colin et al., 2018 and dark patterns; Mathur et al., 2019) is evidenced by “a user interface carefully crafted to trick users into doing things they might not otherwise do” (Brignull, 2022; page 1). Much dark design is constructed with monetization as the primary goal- even in spaces without ecommerce design (e.g., free-to-play apps representing >95% of all mobile apps; Fitton et al. 2021). The importance of prospecting cannot be overstated in the sales discipline. The authors introduce an exercise that allows students to develop this skill by identifying and developing a detailed prospecting list with data gleaned from real-world contact information. This project can be executed both stand-alone or as an introduction to a larger-scale sales project. Additionally, this project can be delivered beyond the classroom in a workshop-style format to assist student organizations/clubs achieve their goals (e.g., fundraising, corporate outreach). Empirical results are shared, as well as qualitative student feedback, to demonstrate the exercise’s effectiveness for teaching this vital concept.

This study provides a review of brand activism phenomenon against the background of the Black Lives Matter movement. It is informed by the growing number of activist customers, leaders and corporations that are taking a stand on divisive social and political issues that exists in today’s America.
