The Impact Of Market Metaphysics On Information Infrastructure Decisions, Bernd Carsten Stahl 2014 De Montfort University

The Impact Of Market Metaphysics On Information Infrastructure Decisions, Bernd Carsten Stahl

Communications of the IIMA

One of the most pressing questions that governments and societies have to answer is how to develop the infrastructure of the expected information society. In this paper I will take a look at two archetypical positions: at a state-oriented and a market-oriented view. I will recount the arguments for both sides in order to then demonstrate that all of these arguments are in fact derivatives of the older discussion about state versus market that has been with us at least since Marx. I will then try to show that these arguments are based on metaphysical assumptions about the nature of …

Discussing Issues Of Information Technology In Country Development, Rami Al-Gharaibeh, William Acar, Andrew G. Kotulic, Thomas J. Froehlich

Communications of the IIMA

The development of countries with laggard economies is becoming a global concern. The harmful complications of poverty and illiteracy are beginning to show up outside those countries in violent forms. The precautions against this migration of harm are splitting the world apart at the same time as technology may become able to bring it together. Over the last few years, information technology (IT) has grown very fast and is still spreading into all aspects of life in developed countries. The recent research in those countries is bringing more evidence that IT is a leveraging tool for business and not a …

Employee's Participation: A Critical Success Factor For Justice Perception, Wai Kwan (Elaine) Lau 2014 Marshall University

Employee's Participation: A Critical Success Factor For Justice Perception, Wai Kwan (Elaine) Lau

Accounting Faculty Research

The present study proposed and tested a model that examines the relationship between leadership style, employee’s participation, and justice perceptions. The paper extended the literature of the justice by connecting three major research areas (leadership style, employee’s participation, and organizational justice), and examined the influences of leadership style and employee’s participation in shaping employee’s perception of justice. Results indicated that transactional, transformational, and dynamic leadership have positive impact on distributive, procedural, and interactional justice. Moreover, the effect of leadership style on organizational justice was indirect through employee’s participation. This study synthesized previous leadership studies and argued that leadership style can …

Managerial Commitment To Sustainable Supply Chain Management Projects, Thomas F. Gattiker, Craig R. Carter, Xiaowen Huang, Wendy L. Tate 2014 Boise State University

Managerial Commitment To Sustainable Supply Chain Management Projects, Thomas F. Gattiker, Craig R. Carter, Xiaowen Huang, Wendy L. Tate

IT and Supply Chain Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Most companies are under pressure to improve the environmental sustainability of their supply chains. However, there is considerable variance in companies’ ability to successfully deploy environmental management projects. One important factor, according to articles in the academic and business press, is the ability of champions of sustainable supply chain management projects within organizations to gain the commitment of colleagues (e.g., other managers from a variety of functions) to help these projects succeed. Therefore, this paper examines variables that affect a project champion’s ability to gain this commitment from colleagues. In particular, building on existing research from supply chain management and …

Motivational Issues Of Faculty In Saudi Arabia, Peter J. Anthony, Akram Abdul Cader

Walden Faculty and Staff Publications

This study focused on the factors that affect motivation of faculty in Saudi Arabia. It included two surveys and open-ended queries to a focus group of five academic managers and 25 faculty members of varying nationalities, rank, and institutes in Saudi Arabia. The research showed that the faculties in Saudi Arabia’s higher education industry feel disconnected from the program development. The faculty members did not feel motivated to participate in the development and improvement of the academic program due to: (a) lack of monetary and non-monetary incentives, (b) management not involving faculty in decision-making, and (c) lack of recognition and …

Platform Pricing With Endogenous Network Effects, Mei LIN, Ruhai WU, Wen ZHOU 2014 Singapore Management University

Platform Pricing With Endogenous Network Effects, Mei Lin, Ruhai Wu, Wen Zhou

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper examines a monopoly platform’s two-sided pricing strategy through modeling the trades between the participating sellers and buyers. In this approach, the network effects emerge endogenously through the equilibrium trading strategies of the two sides. We show that platform pricing depends crucially on the characteristics associated with market liquidity, including both sides’ entry costs, the buyers’ preferences, and the distribution of the sellers’ quality. The platform may subsidize sellers if the market is sufficiently liquid, whereas buyer subsidy can be optimal given an illiquid market. We also illustrate the impact of the sellers’ quality heterogeneity on the platform’s optimal …

A Metrics Suite Of Cloud Computing Adoption Readiness, Robert J. KAUFFMAN, Dan MA, Martin YU 2014 Singapore Management University

A Metrics Suite Of Cloud Computing Adoption Readiness, Robert J. Kauffman, Dan Ma, Martin Yu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recent research on cloud computing adoption indicates that there has been a lack of deep understanding of its benefits by managers and organizations. This has been an obstacle for adoption. We report on an initial design for a firm-level cloud computing readiness metrics suite. We propose categories and measures to form a set of metrics to measure adoption readiness and assess the required adjustments in strategy and management, technology and operations, and business policies. We reviewed the relevant interdisciplinary literature and interviewed industry professionals to ground our metrics based on theory and practice knowledge. We identified four relevant categories for …

Competitive Market Research And Product Design, Haixiu WANG 2014 Lingnan University

Competitive Market Research And Product Design, Haixiu Wang

Lingnan Theses

To learn the uncertainty of customer preference on the attribute of new product, usually a firm needs to do market research. Developing a product on an attribute which is less preferred by customer may lead to a failure. In addition, a firm used to take efforts to design the product. In recent years, we observed a new business model in which the firm does not take effort to design new product, nor does she do market research by herself. She provides rewards to attract outside designers to design new product. Some designers may take effort and design products based on …

Advertising In Asymmetric Competing Supply Chains, Bin Liu, Gangshu (George) Cai, Andy A. Tsay 2014 Santa Clara University

Advertising In Asymmetric Competing Supply Chains, Bin Liu, Gangshu (George) Cai, Andy A. Tsay

Information Systems and Analytics

Advertising is a crucial tool for demand creation and market expansion. When a manufacturer uses a retailer as a channel for reaching end customers, the advertising strategy takes on an additional dimension: which party will perform the advertising to end customers. Cost sharing (“co-operative advertising”) arrangements proliferate the option by decoupling the execution of the advertising from its funding. We examine the efficacy of cost sharing in a model of two competing manufacturer–retailer supply chains who sell partially substitutable products that may differ in market size. Some counterintuitive findings suggest that the firms performing the advertising would rather bear the …

The Impact Of Regulation Fd On The Information Environment: Evidence From The Stock Market Response To Stock Split Announcements, LiLi Eng, Joohyung Ha, Sandeep Nabar 2014 Missouri University of Science and Technology

The Impact Of Regulation Fd On The Information Environment: Evidence From The Stock Market Response To Stock Split Announcements, Lili Eng, Joohyung Ha, Sandeep Nabar

Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper examines the information environment effects of regulation fair disclosure (Reg FD). We investigate the stock market response to stock splits in the pre- and post-regulation periods. We find that abnormal returns around split announcement are positive in both periods, but the magnitude of the returns is smaller in the post-FD period relative to the pre-FD period. The difference between the pre- and post-FD period abnormal returns persists even after we control for factors that may affect split announcement returns. We also find that the magnitude of the association between announcement returns, and the unexpected portion of the split …

An Ecological Model For Digital Platforms Maintenance And Evolution, Paolo ROCCHI, Paolo SPAGNOLETTI, Subhajit DATTA 2014 Guido Carli University

An Ecological Model For Digital Platforms Maintenance And Evolution, Paolo Rocchi, Paolo Spagnoletti, Subhajit Datta

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The maintenance of software products has been studied extensively in both software engineering and management information systems. Such studies are mainly focused on the activities that take place prior to starting the maintenance phase. Their contribution is either related to the improvement of software quality or to validating contingency models for reducing maintenance efforts. The continuous maintenance philosophy suggests to shift the attention within the maintenance phase for better coping with the evolutionary trajectories of digital platforms. In this paper, we examine the maintenance process of a digital platform from the perspective of the software vendor. Based on our empirical …

Managing Seller Heterogeneity In A Competitive Marketplace, R. Wu, Mei LIN 2014 Singapore Management University

Managing Seller Heterogeneity In A Competitive Marketplace, R. Wu, Mei Lin

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The growth of online marketplaces is accompanied by significant heterogeneity of the third-party sellers. The marketplace owner often applies policies that favor the sellers who offer higher values to buyers, which puts the lower-value sellers at an even greater disadvantage. This leads to the phenomenon of Matthew Effect. Our study focuses on a marketplace owner’s policy in managing seller heterogeneity and analyzes Matthew Effect in a competitive market environment. By extending the circular city model, we analytically examine the price competition among a large number of sellers that differ both in variety and in their value offerings. We present the …

The Relative Effects Of Logistics, Coordination And Human Resource On Humanitarian Aid And Disaster Relief Mission Performance, Aida Idris, Saiful Nizam Che Soh 2014 University of Malaya

The Relative Effects Of Logistics, Coordination And Human Resource On Humanitarian Aid And Disaster Relief Mission Performance, Aida Idris, Saiful Nizam Che Soh

The South East Asian Journal of Management

Most studies on humanitarian aid and disaster relief (HADR) missions suggest that the quality of logistics, coordination and human resource management will affect their performance. However, studies in developing countries are mainly conceptual and lack the necessary empirical evidence to support these contentions. The current paper thereby aimed to fill this knowledge gap by statistically examining the effects of the abovementioned factors on such missions. Focusing on the Malaysian army due to its extensive experience in HADR operations, the paper opted for a quantitative approach to allow for a more objective analysis of the issues. The results show that there …

Information Quality Maturity: Examining The Progress Of Data Quality Management And Identifying A Path Forward, Russell Eye 2014 University of Arkansas Little Rock

Information Quality Maturity: Examining The Progress Of Data Quality Management And Identifying A Path Forward, Russell Eye

Theses and Dissertations

Data quality has become a large focus of businesses in recent years, as the impact of poor data quality has become more widely recognized. One of the early steps in data quality management is to conduct a maturity assessment. However, it appears that little progress in data quality management has been made in recent years. Implementing a data governance framework can help alleviate data quality maturity issues. Big data presents its own challenges, making data quality management a more difficult task, but big data cannot be addressed until overall data quality is tamed. This thesis sets out to identify current …
