UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Purpose:
The purpose of this paper is to explore how the labor shortage in Macau directly affects the growth and development of the gaming industry. As Macau is currently facing similar situations like PRC China, the blooming economy became the main cause for companies to use lucrative salaries to attract quality employees from different sources, including school dropouts as well as current employees from other organizations. In the long run, this could cause a negative impact to the industry as the companies might be forced to promote immature and inexperienced employees to senior positions in order to fill the …

Have You Restructured For Global Success?, 2011 Singapore Management University
Have You Restructured For Global Success?, Nirmalya Kumar, Phanish Puranam
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
The organizational structures of many multinational corporations are inadequate to the task of capitalizing on opportunities in emerging markets. Locating customer-facing processes in each country-and even using transnational structures that exploit location-specific advantages-just doesn't cut it anymore. So argue Kumar and Puranam, of London Business School. The authors show how the growth of China and India as lead markets and as talent pools, coupled with advances in technology, enable companies to optimize their organizations by segmenting R&D both vertically and horizontally, thereby creating T-shaped structures. The greatest challenge of the T-shaped structure is managing integration across countries. The solution is to …

Many at times as I walk around town, in the cities and the country sides I try to observe how we live our lives in Ghana. In my previous article, I highlight some very important resources that we are endowed with in this country. We all know that those are just but few and we are proud that we have more resources than some of our neighbours in the Sub-Saharan African countries. One of these resources is the human capital. We can be proud of ourselves to have people who think about the necessity of peace in order to enhance …

Recent economic developments in Africa have led to increased educational opportunities and new jobs for the millions of people living in the continent. Specifically, the development changes have had a significant impact on the female population in the member countries as more and more women continue to gain access to training and education and obtain the skills and qualifications needed to enter into the workforce. Due to these recent developments, women in Africa have been able to gain more control over their own finances. As a result, women entrepreneurs in most African countries have become increasingly important drivers of growth …

Public Policy Instruments In (Re)Building National Innovation Capabilities: Cases Of Nanotechnology Development In China, Russia And Brazil, Evgeny A. Klochikhin

In 2001 Goldman Sachs named Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRICs) the most rapidly-growing countries in the world capable of surpassing the United States, Japan and Europe as leading economies by 2050.
Nevertheless, for the last decade we have learned relatively little about the mechanisms of success and failure in these countries. All of them have huge territory and population as well as fast-growing economies that sometimes show two-digit rates of GDP growth per year and surprise the world by their increasing budgets and public spending. In the meantime, most of these countries are believed to be desperately struggling against …

Ownership Unbundling In European Energy Market & Legal Problems Under Eu Law, Michael Diathesopoulos
Michael Diathesopoulos
In this paper we will examine the issue of ownership unbundling and forced divestiture remedies imposed in a series of recent competition law cases of the energy market - examined in other papers - in relation to the possible existence of a series of legal obstacles. These energy market decisions belong to a group of antitrust cases in which a structural divestiture remedy has been imposed under the provisions of Article 9 of Regulation 1/2003. This divestiture refers to transmission networks and to generation capacity and is meant to lead to severe structural changes, which are compatible with the findings …

Fragmentation And Segmentation: Marketing Global Benefits, Russell P. Adams
International Business and Entrepreneurship Faculty Publications and Presentations
Though consumption culture and globalization are major themes impacting the modern landscape, there has been limited research in these areas due to, in part, the increasing fragmentation of markets. A case is made that the seemingly disparate views, cultural fragmentation and global segmentation can be harmonized. This paper presents a theoretical framework to understand how the fragmentation of markets and global segmentation strategies can be compatible. Due to the cultural convergence brought on by globalization and marketing intermediaries, global segments can be identified through the common needs sought by consumers.
