Can Kirana Stores Compete In India's E-Commerce Revolution? Rethinking Traditional Retail In The Digital Age, Anshi Jindal, Ashwarya Kapoor
Management Dynamics
E-commerce has reshaped the global retail landscape bringing both disruptions and opportunities specifically in emerging markets like India. This paper explores the evolution of e-commerce in India and its impact on traditional retail particularly unorganized Kirana stores. By analysing market trends, consumer behaviour and policy implications, the study examines how conventional retailers are adapting to digital transformation. Using Reliance Retail’s JioMart initiative as a case study, it provides insights into the integration of digital and physical retail ecosystems. While e-commerce challenges Kirana stores, it also fosters innovation, growth and the emergence of hybrid retail models.

Atlantic Marketing Journal
Online Food Delivery Platforms (OFDPs) have faced unique challenges related to uncertainty and global risk in recent decades. To address these risks, this study utilized machine learning (ML) techniques, including Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) and Word2Vec, to extract and cluster OFDP-related risk factors. The analysis was conducted using unstructured text data from the annual reports of two prominent OFDP companies—Delivery Hero (DH) and Grubhub (GH)—from 2017 to 2020. We also examined the multidimensional RepRisk Index (RRI) for these companies and developed a two-dimensional matrix to evaluate preparedness and responsiveness across various risk categories in the OFDP sector. The results indicate …

Do The Effects Of Ethnocentrism And Cosmopolitanism Depend On Countries-Of-Origins? An Empirical Study Of U.S. Consumers, Thomas Tanner, Jung Kim, Ronda Mariani
Atlantic Marketing Journal
Consumer ethnocentrism and cosmopolitanism have been shown to be instrumental factors for the evaluation and purchase of foreign products. Many prior studies have provided evidence that ethnocentric consumers have lower willingness to buy for products that originated from foreign countries, while cosmopolitan consumers have higher willingness to buy. However, prior research has been conducted in the research setting where only one foreign country is pit against home country. Therefore, it is not clear whether their direct impacts on animosity, product judgement, and willingness to buy will be homogeneous, regardless of countries-of-origin. In other words, do consumers hold the same degree …

Exploring Business' And Consumers' Engagement On E-Commerce Platforms, Yichen Wang
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
The rapid growth of e-commerce platforms has changed how consumers make decisions and how sellers advertise their products. This dissertation examines two key aspects: consumer choice modeling in dynamic online shopping environments and sellers' strategic advertising decisions in competitive markets.
The first essay introduces a Hierarchical Bayesian model to improve the understanding of Individual-Variant Choice Sets (IVCS), where consumers' choice sets change over time and include multiple selections. Traditional models struggle to account for these complexities due to restrictive assumptions. The proposed model introduces a flexible covariance structure that captures perceived similarities between alternatives, leading to better predictive accuracy. Validation …

Streaming media platforms have emerged as new and natively digital forms of content delivery for mainstream news and entertainment media over the past decades. Underlying technologies also unfold new possibilities for the circulation artistic/creative digital video works. Yet, such potential remains relatively underexplored, due to the complexities involved in the public distribution of such works. In this study, we analyze these complexities and critically evaluate emerging models, such as open access streaming media platforms, subscription-based platforms, and cryptocurrency and NFT-based platforms that feature new administrative forms and governance strategies. We finally discuss the possible roles of traditional public cultural institutions …

Balance Or Highlight? The Impact Of Power On Consumer Choices For Joint Consumption, Chaeyeong Kim
Asia Marketing Journal
Consumers often make decisions on behalf of the self and others, such as family, friends, or colleagues, when choosing products to jointly consume. Postulating that power—a central element of social dynamics—shapes reliance on internal versus external information, the current research explores its effect on joint consumption choices. Across three studies, I find that low-power individuals balance self and others’ preferences, whereas high-power individuals are likely to highlight their preferences (H1). In addition, I provide evidence for decision-making strategy (i.e., reliance on reasons vs. feelings) as the key mechanism underpinning the relationship between power and joint consumption choices (H2). Finally, I …

Charitable organizations use donated funds for program costs to support the cause and overhead costs to cover the charity's general operation and fundraising. This research investigates the influence of preannouncement of donation expenditure on attitudes toward charity and overhead aversion (i.e., negative response to overhead). Preannouncement of donation expenditure involves the disclosure of how donor contributions will be allocated to the program and overhead costs. The results of two empirical studies show that preannouncement positively influences attitudes toward charity and mitigates overhead aversion. Study 1 indicates that the preannouncement of donation expenditure enhances perceived donation impact, leading to a positive …
