Gambling Or Skill: Taxation Issues Surrounding The Daily Fantasy Sports Industry, Keith Lowe, Benjamin B. Boozer Jr.
Southern University College of Business E-Journal
With a waxing interest in sporting events, participants are increasingly supplementing passive viewing with a more active role. Fantasy sports leagues have burgeoned as a result, with corresponding increases in live game attendance and media consumption across platforms. Fantasy bettors seek financial gain through the ability of athletes and the likelihood of their team performing well in a sporting event. A major legislative concern within this industry is whether these activities are considered gambling, with its related stigma, or otherwise just a type of sporting activity. More importantly, gambling has a long history as a major source of tax revenue …

Tesla Vs. Its Stock Price: “Herd Theory” At Work?, Yun Cheng, Carroll Griffin
Southern University College of Business E-Journal
Since its inception in 2003, Tesla, Inc. has striven to be more than simply an electric automobile manufacturer. Since its first release in 2008 (the luxury Roadster), the company has introduced several additional high-end models as well as a much anticipated mid-priced model. Its vehicles consistently receive enthusiastic reviews from consumer analysts and industry publications alike. Perhaps as a reflection of its continued innovation and product-line expansion, as well as investor optimism regarding the company’s future prospects, its stock price has risen to extraordinary levels. However, despite all of this apparent success and highly-valued stock, Tesla has generated relatively little …

We use 2010-2018 publicly listed Chinese company data to analyze how ownership structure and corporate governance affects tax management. Our results indicate that diverse ownership structure might lower a company’s tax rates, whereas traditional corporate governance measures, such as board size, independent board member percentage and duality of CEO serving as chair do not affect tax.

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 1917 (TCJA) amended the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 and significantly lowered the corporate tax rate, in addition to providing other tax incentives to spur corporate investments. The TCJA has the potential to impact corporate cash flows and corporate investment and financing decisions. In response to the TCJA, firms could enhance their capital expenditure budgets, return excess capital to shareholders, and/or hold excess capital for better opportunities in the future. Using S&P 500 firms as a sample, this study finds no statistical difference in the actual corporate taxes paid in the post-and pre-TCJA …

Two Studies Exploring The Effects Of Ageing Cohorts And Channel Usage On The Antecedents And Consequence Of Customer Satisfaction, Yongchang Chen
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
A rapidly ageing customer base, and an acceleration in the adoption of self-service technologies (SST) are two major trends which are set to have an increasing impact on how companies manage and satisfy customers. While there has been a rich body of work studying the effects of ageing and SST usage on customers, research on how they might affect cumulative satisfaction appears to be limited. The ageing literature tends to focus on cognition and decision-making processes, while SST research tends to be narrowly focused on SST evaluation and adoption. Our understanding on how ageing affects how satisfied customers are with …

Betting On Talent: Examining The Relationship Between Employee Retention And Onboarding Programs, Jonna B. Blount
Engaged Management ReView
The expectations of employees in the United States continue to evolve as generational shifts occur in the workforce. The already raging war for talent has been fueled by the 2020 pandemic, which introduced new ways to work and different types of work opportunities. As a result, employees are re-evaluating their options and seeking ways to extract more value from their professional lives. In these circumstances, employee retention is a competitive advantage, and companies must consider how to retain their most desirable talent. Research in the organizational behavior domain shows that when employees hold values like those of their employing organization, …

Corporate Reputations Measured And In Practice: How Can Corporations Stay Authentic To Their Positive External Depictions, Internally?, Valeene Wilson
Student Theses and Dissertations
This research paper discusses corporate reputation and how companies can stay authentic to their positive external reputations internally. Organizations are getting better at communicating who they are but fall short in fulfilling broader reputation goals. To be managed, corporate reputations must be measured. Fombrun introduced the Reputation Institute and the RepTrak measurement system, which builds on research done on leadership, employee engagement, and the evolution of corporate reputation. This paper dives into how to assess a corporation’s reputation using the aggregate reputation ranking RepTrak as a frame for the analysis of qualitative data, collected on four organizations and supplemented with …

Muslim Fashion Influencers Shaping Modesty In The Twenty-First Century On Social Media, Awa Sanno
Student Theses and Dissertations
The depiction of Muslim women in Western media has been a long-running joke, as they are framed to be oppressed by the burdens of their religion and the hijab. However, Muslim women have used the power of social media to counter that narrative through their large followings as fashion influencers, digital creators, food bloggers, makeup artists, lifestyle bloggers, musicians, and so much more. Specifically, Muslim fashion influencers are changing and redefining the notion of modesty throughout their posted content on social media. Many people in Muslim communities see this redefinition of modesty as a conflict with the "proper" ways of …

Diversity And Inclusion In The Beauty And Cosmetic Advertising And Its Impact On Corporate Reputation, Lisa N. Alli
Student Theses and Dissertations
Across many industries, reputation management has been a top priority, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, and the ongoing issues surrounding gender, race, and ethnicity. The beauty and cosmetic industry, for example, continues to face several challenges involving diversity and representation in product development and advertising. This is a study of the beauty and cosmetic industry and how corporate reputation is shaped by representation in advertising and product development. This research demonstrates select ways how brands have marketed their products throughout history by retrieving print advertisements from archives and social media. Changes in representation of gender, age, skin tone, skin type, …
