The Big Short, Elizabeth Armon 2016 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

The Big Short, Elizabeth Armon

Communication Studies

The Big Short (McKay, 2015), adapted from the non-fiction novel The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine by Michael Lewis (2010), follows three separate but parallel stories leading up to the United States housing crisis of 2008. On a macro-level, the film brilliantly depicted the creation, and the ultimate burst, of the credit and housing market bubble. However, on a micro-level the audience is given an opportunity to realize and empathize with the internal struggle that many of the main characters faced as they grappled with the fact that their financial gain from shorting the market came with the caveat …

Picturing The Past: Media, History, And Photography, Bonnie Brennen, Hanno Hardt 2016 Marquette University

Picturing The Past: Media, History, And Photography, Bonnie Brennen, Hanno Hardt

Bonnie Brennen

Photographs shape not only what we remember but also how we remember. Picturing the Past explores the relations between photojournalism and history. Its contributors discuss dramatic changes in the American press's coverage of presidential death from McKinley through Kennedy and the curious distillation of enormous collections of photographs taken during cataclysmic events such as the Civil War and the Holocaust into a handful of images that have become cultural icons. Ranging from the idealization of American life in 1930s photojournalism to the issue of authenticity in documentary photography, these thought-provoking essays examine how photographs influence collective memory, generate a sense …

Sketching As Visual Dialogue.Pdf, Andreas Luescher 2015 Bowling Green State University - Main Campus

Sketching As Visual Dialogue.Pdf, Andreas Luescher

Andreas Luescher

Sketching is one of the earliest known forms of communication. It’s a record of thoughts, ideas and visions. It may sound simple, but it’s actually quite complex, because the expression of sketching varies according to an individual’s personal style, visual thinking and imagination, and is also related to one’s context and culture.  Sketching is a form of auto-reflection that encourages the mirroring of events that may not be noticed by the conscious mind, and daydreams that occur frequently in different working and life settings. For architects, these sketches can reveal the desire for a different and more intimate relationship between …

The result reveals the significance of the semantic nature, which directs individuals’ viewpoint and creates a new connotation to alter their preconception. Also, Pantone’s color of 2014, Radiant Orchid, verified that the consolidation of the visual image and verbal content can maximize the influences that the …

The Ink Transfer And Image Definition Differences Between Elastomer And Photopolymer Printing Systems, Jason Palmer 2015 Clemson University

The Ink Transfer And Image Definition Differences Between Elastomer And Photopolymer Printing Systems, Jason Palmer

All Theses

With recent advancements in elastomer imaging and plate technologies, a study comparing the ink transfer and image definition characteristics of the current flexographic printing systems was conducted. Using a number of print metrics across a variety of testing conditions, overall results suggested that the elastomer printing system laid down more ink and produced shaper printing than the photopolymer printing system. In particular, the elastomer printing system showed greater solid ink densities for the solvent and aqueous ink printing conditions, while the photopolymer printing system showed higher values in the ultraviolet ink printing conditions. Results across conditions also revealed that the …

Design Research: Typography Within The Israeli Linguistic Landscape, Shayna Tova Blum 2015 Xavier University of Louisiana

Design Research: Typography Within The Israeli Linguistic Landscape, Shayna Tova Blum

Faculty and Staff Publications

A linguistic landscape signifies language used within a physical or virtual public space, in which communication is presented in typographic form, portraying a message to an audience. Within the state of Israel, the linguistic landscape presents a unique situation in which it is common to view municipal and commercial multilingual signs that are designed using Hebrew, English, and Arabic letterforms. By studying the diverse linguistic landscape within Israeli urban environments, the article offers perspectives on the use of multilingual visual language, based on discussions with five Israeli designers in the summer of 2015.

Measuring The Effect Of Affordances On A Crash Cart Medicine Packaging, Javier De La Fuente, Daniel Tachibana, Kristen Leemon, Christine Liu, Colleen L. Twomey, Soma Roy, Laura Bix, Scott Bisheff

Graphic Communication

Abstract: In the United States, most drugs stored in crash carts of emergency rooms are packaged in folding cartons with opening mechanisms that involve pressing and tearing the bottom of the package. Anecdotal evidence and a previous study conducted by the research team suggest that these packages are counterintuitive for lay users. The concept of affordances, how design features communicate actionable possibilities, can be applied to improve the usability of packaging. In order to measure the effect of individual design features and previous experience on opening time and error frequency during first opening attempt, a commercially available package for epinephrine …

Message Design Logics And Messaging In The Ebola Crisis, Gregory M. Bieger 2015 Kennesaw State University

Message Design Logics And Messaging In The Ebola Crisis, Gregory M. Bieger

Symposium of Student Scholars

O'Keefe's (1988) theory of message design logics explains why some messages are more

persuasive than others. The first, expressive design logic, is the most basic and focuses on

expressing individual thoughts and opinions (O’Keefe, 1988). This type of message design

merely states what the persuader wants. The second, conventional design logic, appeals to

typical reasons or emotional appeals that would be suitable for any audience. The third,

rhetorical message design logic, is the most complex and sophisticated message design focusing

on achieving an agreement between the sender and receiver in which the message provides

context. Unlike conventional design logic, rhetorical …

Automated Technique For Real-Time Production Of Lifelike Animations Of American Sign Language, John McDonald, Rosalee Wolfe, Jerry C. Schnepp, Julie Hochgesang, Diana Gorman Jamrozik, Marie Stumbo, Larwan Berke, Melissa Bialek, Farah Thomas 2015 DePaul University, Chicago

Automated Technique For Real-Time Production Of Lifelike Animations Of American Sign Language, John Mcdonald, Rosalee Wolfe, Jerry C. Schnepp, Julie Hochgesang, Diana Gorman Jamrozik, Marie Stumbo, Larwan Berke, Melissa Bialek, Farah Thomas

Jerry C Schnepp

Generating sentences from a library of signs implemented through a sparse set of key frames derived from the segmental structure of a phonetic model of ASL has the advantage of flexibility and efficiency, but lacks the lifelike detail of motion capture. These difficulties are compounded when faced with real-time generation and display. This paper describes a technique for automatically adding realism without the expense of manually animating the requisite detail. The new technique layers transparently over and modifies the primary motions dictated by the segmental model, and does so with very little computational cost, enabling real-time production and display. The …

The Affect Of Versioned Package Design On Various Demographics, Howard E. Vogl, Colleen L. Twomey, Kristen Dang, Alexis B. Kelsey

Graphic Communication

This study challenged the concept of a single best package design for food products. Research found that typography played a crucial role in the consumer’s perception of the quality and the value of a product. It was also found that, based on the consumer’s purchasing intention, the use of type or graphics on a package could have either a positive or a negative affect on consumer perception of product value and quality. In addition, this study pointed out that these variables require careful testing in the marketplace, which can only be achieved in package designs that can be economically tested …
