The following are three more specific definitions: (1) In semantics and discourse analysis: A generalization of the concept of conversation to all modalities and contexts. (2) "The totality of codified linguistic usages attached to a given type of social practice. (E.g.: legal discourse, medical discourse, religious discourse.)" (3) In the work of Michel Foucault, and social theorists inspired by him: "an entity of sequences of signs in that they are enouncements (enoncés)" (Foucault 1969: 141). This past October, CLAGS hosted a historic conference to commemorate, celebrate, and evaluate the diverse contributions of lesbians over the course of the 1970s. The conference culminated a semester-long series of events that unfurled over the Spring 2010 term. In planning for the conference, the organizing committee (made up of Melissa Gasparotto, Andrea Freud Loewenstein, Roberta Sklar, Urvashi Vaid, and myself) imagined this conference as embracing as broad a field of lesbian lives as it could.

Adoptees are partially or entirely disconnected from those involved in their birth stories, so adoptive families create adoption entrance narratives to fill that void. Scholars assert that these narratives impact adopted child well-being later in life, but that assumption has yet to be empirically tested. The goal of this study was to examine themes emerging from adoption entrance narratives (n = 105), and to then determine the impact of story content on adoptees’ self-concept. Seven themes emerged: openness, deception, chosen child, fate, difference, rescue, and reconnection. Results indicate the salience of the chosen child, negative reconnection, and difference themes …

A thirty day survey was conducted among a small but diverse group of women soliciting journal and questionnaire responses to identify data related to communicator image and style as well as sensory and mood changes. The assessment extracts data and compares to the female menstrual cycle to ascertain if there are possible roadmaps for future research. The findings illustrate potential relationships predominately on day one of the menstrual cycle with possibilities ranging from days twenty-eight to two, as well as mid-cycle.

The media continue to face the challenge of ensuring equal and fair representation to the entire population, and gender and media activists in particular have taken up the challenge of bringing about change. Research shows that women have not yet achieved equal access and representation compared to men: they are under-represented as reporters, news sources, and audience members. This paper examines Palestinian Orthodox Christian identity as shaped by recent historic and contemporary circumstances of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. While the paper is based upon interviews with Palestinian Christians, I utilize scholarship to support the ways in which the sacred historic narrative, as revealed by the interviewees, influences their collective understanding of self. The Palestinian Orthodox relationship with Israeli Jews, Palestinian Muslims and other Palestinian Christians is taken into account in order to reveal how they use their sacred identity to construct a social role for themselves that allows them to make sense of their status as a persecuted minority.

This article utilizes ethnographic methods and government documents to examine the self-policing and peacekeeping strategies of the Rainbow Family, a nonviolent acephalous intentional community that holds massive weeklong gatherings around the globe. It is a case study that examines the efficacy of these methods, comparing them to those traditional police agencies employ under similar conditions. It contextualizes these strategies by examining other utopian and anarchist communities and movements such as Critical Mass bike rides. This study demonstrates how smiling, chanting, listening, social pressure, and social capital all play into forming a more effective and less violent approach toward peacekeeping.
