Background

Although funding has supported the scale up of routine, opt-out HIV testing in the US, variance in implementation mechanisms and barriers in high-burden jurisdictions remains unknown.

Methods

We conducted a survey of health care organizations in Washington, DC and Houston/Harris County to determine number of HIV tests completed in 2011, policy and practices associated with HIV testing, funding mechanisms, and reported barriers to testing in each jurisdiction and to compare results between jurisdictions.

Results

In 2012, 43 Houston and 35 DC HIV-testing organizations participated in the survey. Participants represented 85% of Department of Health-supported testers in DC and 90% …

Aminoglycosides are a critical component of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) treatment but data on their efficacy and adverse effects in Botswana is scarce. We determined the effect of amikacin on treatment outcomes and development of hearing loss in MDR-TB patients. Patients started on MDR-TB treatment between 2006 and 2012 were included. Multivariate analysis was used to determine the effect of amikacin on treatment outcomes and development of hearing loss.

An interpretation of betweenness on a set satisfies the antisymmetry axiom at a point a if it is impossible for each of two distinct points to lie between the other and a. In this paper we study the role of antisymmetry as it applies to the K-interpretation of betweenness in a Hausdorff continuum X, where a point c lies between points a and b exactly when every subcontinuum of X containing both a and b contains c as well.

In this study, we explored the relationship between prospective teachers’ algebraic thinking and the questions they posed during one-on-one diagnostic interviews that focused on investigating the algebraic thinking of middle school students. To do so, we evaluated prospective teachers’ algebraic thinking proficiency across 125 algebra-based tasks and we analyzed the characteristics of questions they posed during the interviews. We found that prospective teachers with lower algebraic thinking proficiency did not ask any probing questions. Instead, they either posed questions that simply accepted and affirmed student responses or posed questions that guided the students toward an answer without probing student thinking. …

Female menstrual cycle length is thought to play an important role in couple fecundity, or the biologic capacity for reproduction irrespective of pregnancy intentions. A complete assessment of the association between menstrual cycle length and fecundity requires a model that accounts for multiple risk factors (both male and female) and the couple's intercourse pattern relative to ovulation. Yu, Wang, Wu and Ye call a semigroup S τ -congruence-free, where τ is an equivalence relation on S, if any congruence ρ on S is either disjoint from τ or contains τ . A congruence-free semigroup is then just an ω-congruence-free semigroup, where ω is the universal relation. They determined the completely regular semigroups that are τ -congruence-free with respect to each of the Green’s relations. We propose a general framework to perform gene/region based analysis of sequencing data by regressing a functional response on one or multiple scalar predictors. Next generation sequencing technologies make it possible to uncover genetic information from millions of variants. Since the observed sequenced variants are very close in their genetic positions, we can consider them to be realizations of random continuous functions. Therefore, instead of analyzing multiple individual genetic variants per subject, we can estimate the underlying continuous function and treat it as a functional response in a regression model. Despite the ever-increasing interest in understanding biology at the system level, there are several factors that hinder studies and analyses of biological systems. First, unlike systems from other applied fields whose parameters can be effectively identified, biological systems are usually unidentifiable, even in the ideal case when all possible system outputs are known with high accuracy. Second, the presence of multivariate bifurcations often leads the system to behaviors that are completely different in nature. We would closely look at two recent published papers dealing with characterizations of certain univariate continuous distributions. We shall explain that the main results reported lack important assumptions. These results nevertheless are based on the conditional expectations of monotone functions of the generalized order statistics. In this dissertation we study three problems related to motifs and recursive trees. In the first problem we consider a collection of uncorrelated motifs and their occurrences on the fringe of random recursive trees. We compute the exact mean and variance of the multivariate random vector of the counts of occurrences of the motifs. In this thesis multiple methods are proposed and applied to the Akamai CIDR time series data. The Akamai network is one of the world's largest distributed-computing platforms, with more than 250,000 servers in more than 80 countries. It is responsible for 15-20 percent of all web traffic. We obtained 110 GB raw CIDR data over a 18 month period, collected on the Akamai network from November 2011 to April 2013. ^ The Seasonal-Trend Decomposition procedure based on loess (STL+) is used to model the CIDR series. D&R is a statistical framework for the analysis of large complex data that enables feasible and practical analysis of large complex data. The analyst selects a division method to divide the data into subsets, applies an analytic method of the analysis to each subset independently with no communication among subsets, selects a recombination method that is applied to the outputs across subsets to form a result of the analytic method for the entire data. Moment distributions have a vital role in mathematics and statistics, in particular in probability theory, in the perspective research related to ecology, reliability, biomedical field, econometrics, survey sampling and in life-testing. Hasnain (2013) developed an exponentiated moment exponential (EME) distribution and discussed some of its important properties. In the present work, we propose a generalization of EME distribution which we call it generalized EME (GEME) distribution and develop various properties of the distribution. We also present characterizations of the distribution in terms of conditional expectation as well as based on hazard function of the GEME random variable.

Important sources of variation in the spread of HIV in communities arise from overlapping sexual networks and heterogeneity in biological and behavioral risk factors in populations. These sources of variation are not routinely accounted for in the design of HIV prevention trials. In this paper, we use agent based models to account for these sources of variation. We illustrate the approach with an agent based model for the spread of HIV infection among men who have sex with men (MSM) in South Africa. Limited data exist about the long-term prognosis of patients with acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF) further stratified according to ejection fraction (EF) findings. The primary objective of this population-based observational study was to characterize and compare trends in long-term prognosis after an episode of ADHF across 3 EF strata. Hospital medical records were reviewed for 3,604 residents of the Worcester, Massachusetts, metropolitan area who were discharged after ADHF from all 11 medical centers in central Massachusetts during 1995, 2000, 2002, and 2004 and had EF measurements during their index hospitalizations.
