Extensive research has explored the novel's historical context, social critique, and its influence on Indonesian nationalism, but less attention has been paid to the literary devices that give the novel its enduring emotional power. This paper fills this gap by examining how metaphor and simile presented in the dialogs found in the novel function as key instruments in shaping the reader's experience. Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

At the onset of the first wave of COVID-19 in the United States, the pandemic's effect on future birthrates was unknown. In this paper, we assess whether digital trace data—often touted as a panacea for traditional data scarcity—held the potential to accurately predict fertility change caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. Specifically, we produced state-level, dynamic future predictions of the pandemic's effect on birthrates in the United States using pregnancy-related Google search data. Importantly, these predictions were made in October 2020 (and revised in February 2021), well before the birth effect of the pandemic could have possibly …

Role Of Partial Requirement Tariffs And Standby Charges In Microgrid Adoption In Ohio, Matthew R. Fulton, Andrew R. Thomas

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

Utility partial load tariffs can be used to enable microgrids to be connected to distributions systems. While partial load tariffs can be avoided by connecting the microgrid directly to the transmission grid, this strategy is likely to be more effective for larger microgrids (e.g. 10 MW). But partial load tariffs – if suitably designed -- can be very useful to enabling smaller microgrid development.
