A Profile Of Advanced Manufacturing In Northeast Ohio, Iryna Demko 2019 Cleveland State University

A Profile Of Advanced Manufacturing In Northeast Ohio, Iryna Demko

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

Advanced manufacturing industries represent technology-intensive manufacturing of a fundamental importance to the economic strength and national security of the United States. In 2017, advanced manufacturing industries in Northeast Ohio contributed over half of the manufacturing output and employed 42% of the region’s manufacturing workforce. On average, advanced manufacturing industries paid 26% higher wages than other manufacturing industries. Manufacturing companies striving to achieve new levels of output and keep pace with global competition should increasingly turn to one of their most important assets—people—to drive further growth.

Wealth-creating industries are the backbone of the regional economy; they contribute to economic growth, personal wealth, and regional competitive advantage. For an economy to stay vibrant and competitive, it is essential to identify these industries so that strategic policies can foster and support regional growth. Three regional groups of drivers were identified in Northeast Ohio (NEO): Professional Services, Growing Legacy Manufacturing, and Oil and Gas. These groups, known as Groups of Regional Driver Industries (GRIDs) were identified using statistical analyses and data-driven insights for 2013 to 2017. GRIDs had strong regional specialization, growing output, rising productivity, and local competitive advantage. …

Webinar: Modeling Freeway Traffic In A Mixed Environment: Connected And Human-Driven Vehicles, Xianfeng Terry Yang

TREC Webinar Series

Although connected vehicles (CVs) will soon go beyond testbeds, CVs and human-driven vehicles (HVs) will co-exist over a long period. Hence, it is critical to consider the interactions between these two types of vehicles in traffic flow modeling. In this study, we aim to develop a macroscopic model to understand how CVs would impact HVs in the traffic stream. Grounded on the second-order traffic flow model, we study the relationships among flow, density, and speed by two sets of formulations for the groups of CVs and HVs, respectively. A set of friction factors, which indicate CVs' impact to HVs, are …

Food Access In Petersburg, Virginia: Final Report And Recommendations, Ursp 666 (Commercial Revitalization), Logan Ashby, Chesley De Leon, Shekinah Mitchell, Michael Nixon-Garrison, Gabriella Pino-Mareno, Elizabeth Roderick, Jeff Smith

Urban and Regional Studies and Planning Reports

The City of Petersburg has long suffered with issues of limited access to food and food insecurity. Food deserts, or areas underserved by retail food options, are prevalent throughout the City. As a result, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has ranked the city last of Virginia's 133 counties in their annual health rankings.

For the Fall 2019 semester, students from Virginia Commonwealth University's L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs, through Dr. John Accordino's Urban Commercial Revitalization course, focused on planning solutions to address food deserts in commercial areas, with the City of Petersburg being one of their …

Urban and Regional Studies and Planning Reports

Access to food is one of the most important aspects of a healthy, sustainable community. Grocery stores and other suppliers can serve as an economic anchor to provide social benefits to communities. Unfortunately, many communities do not have convenient and/or affordable access to grocery items, particularly fresh produce.

As part of Virginia Commonwealth University's Fall 2019 graduate course on Urban Commercial Revitalization, class members researched 13 retail and other food access options, which are described in this report. Each chapter covers a food access option and provides basic information that will be useful to individuals, organizations, or government agencies that …

King and Queen County believes that economic development is crucial to ensuring a stable economy and high quality of life for residents of the county. With an out-commuting rate of 71% for the entire Middle Peninsula region, residents and businesses are spending their money outside of the region due to a lack of job opportunities and commercial development. However, the intersection of Route 33 and The Trail at Shacklefords within King and Queen County provides a major economic development opportunity for King and Queen County and the Middle Peninsula region.

Through a one-semester research project, students in a VCU Commercial …

Placemaking/Displacement: Architectures Of Exclusion In The Bay Area, Gordon Douglas 2019 San Jose State University

Placemaking/Displacement: Architectures Of Exclusion In The Bay Area, Gordon Douglas

Faculty Publications, Urban and Regional Planning

This working paper presents new research and argumentation regarding the way we think about the material culture of place and argues that thinking hard about place is essential for addressing social inequality in our cities. Drawing on new empirical research – ethnographic observation, photography, and interviews – it takes the varied communities and landscapes of the San Francisco Bay Area as a lens through which to interrogate the prominent trend of so-called “placemaking” in urban planning, development, and design. I argue that placemaking is intellectually incoherent and frequently elitist in practice, often ignoring existing places while portending a real possibility …

No. 37: Validation Of The Hcp Survey Tool For Measuring Urban Food Insecurity: An Item Response Theory Approach, Vonai Charamba, Ndeyapo Nickanor, Lawrence Kazembe

Hungry Cities Partnership

There is some controversy on the applicability of the summand-based Household Food Security Assessment Score (HFIAS) and Household Dietary Diversity Score (HDDS) as measures of food insecurity in urban areas in the Global South. These measures were primarily designed for measurement in rural communities where food insecurity itself was first identified and is still predominantly conceptualized. The objective of the research reported in this paper is to assess the internal and external validity of the HFIAS and the HDDS in determining food insecurity levels in an urban context, using HCP data for urban households in Windhoek, Namibia. Validation was performed …

Hungry Cities Partnership

Wet markets play an important role in urban food security in many Asian countries. Existing research pays more attention to the wet market food accessibility of urban residents and less on the business operations and profits of wet market vendors. Based on a survey of 1,119 small food enterprises in Nanjing, this study employs the spatial analytical method Geodetector to explore spatial variations in vendor profits in Nanjing. The study shows obvious spatial differentiation in the profits of wet market vendors across the city and draws several conclusions. Profitability is mainly related to the demographic features of vendors, their business …
