Since 2014, Egypt has undertaken an unprecedented expansion of its road network as part of a broader project of territorial development and national renewal. Roads are presented in this project as the connective infrastructure through which new cities, investment zones, and desert territories are brought into circulation. Yet their developmental effects are often difficult to discern: infrastructure is rapidly built but unevenly maintained, while projects justified in terms of mobility, growth, and public benefit can produce dispossession, exclusion, and new forms of risk. Nature-based recreation promotes health in tropical cities but is increasingly threatened by rising heat. This review presents recent evidence on the issue of humid heat stress and outdoor recreation in tropical cities and outlines key adaptation strategies – addressing hazard, exposure, and vulnerability – to enable ‘heat-smart’ nature-based activities. Despite existing solutions, critical research gaps remain, especially in integrating social, physiological, and technological insights to better address humid heat stress in tropical urban environments.

This review of Sheher Mein Gaon: Culture, Conflict and Change in the Urban Villages of Delhi uses the Master Plan for Delhi 2021 and the National Capital Territory of Delhi Laws (Special Provisions) Act (hereafter ‘Special Provisions Act’) to argue that the conditions described in the book are a direct result from the whole-scale exemption provided to Delhi's urban villages from urban planning frameworks. Here, we present four participatory techniques—visioning, mapping, photovoice, and codesign—with practical recommendations for their effective implementation in fostering civic learning and engagement in urban greening among BIPOC and Hispanic youth. With examples of culturally responsive, hands-on activities and an AI-assisted synthesis of youth ideas, drawn from application with over 100 youth in Connecticut, we illustrate their use in informing local urban planning processes. We highlight the role of these techniques in positioning youth as active civic agents and collaborative designers in the creation of urban green spaces, with application for Extension professionals, educators, and planning officials.

Urbanisation in the cities of the Global South is steered through high-level urban development plans and sector-specific policies, often premised on macro-scale processes and economic restructuring. Given the centralized and standardized approach, these plans and policies remain disconnected from the city-making processes that unfold incrementally at the sub-city or the neighbourhood scale through the everyday decisions of multiple stakeholders. The neighbourhood scale is significant as it allows for negotiation and participation, thus providing opportunities to exercise social, spatial, and economic agency. However, despite the extensive development of Space Syntax research, limited research has comparatively examined how contrasting urban morphologies influence spatial hierarchy, accessibility, and intelligibility within the same urban context, particularly in the rapidly transforming cities of the Global South. Amid several initiatives to federalize the Philippines, discourse on engendering federalization remains scarce. This gap forms the basis of this study, which examined the realities of engendering federalization. Data were gathered through in-depth interviews and key informant interviews with research participants from various sectors in Davao City. Guided by Caren Levy’s Web of Institutionalization Framework, the study focused on three core dimensions: political commitment to gender equality, resources, and policy. The findings revealed that engendering federalization, particularly political commitment to gender equality, requires advocacy, institutionalization, gender awareness, and gender-sensitivity formation. The COVID-19 pandemic had a well-documented impact on the formal economy, with the extent of these consequences varying across industries and sociodemographic groups. Less attention has been paid to whether the nonstandard economy, including informal and gig work, mirrored this broader economic fallout. We draw on 2019 and 2020 data from the Survey of Household Economics and Decisionmaking to assess participation in, time spent on, and money earned from nonstandard work across the first year of the pandemic. We find evidence of an overall decline in participation in nonstandard work during this time. However, our results indicate heterogeneous experiences across …

The Survival Of Sugar In Post-Emancipation British Guiana: East Indian Indentured Immigration And The Cheapening Of Labor, Wazir Mohamed

This Paper revisits the post-emancipation changes in the labor market of British Guiana. British Guiana, Mauritius, Trinidad and Tobago, Fiji, and several other locations were spaces where East Indian Indentured Immigrants from Idia became pivotal in the economy.[1] In the decade after emancipation (1838-1848), the rise of global free trade in sugar spurred by the equalization of duties in sugar factored in the search for a cheaper and the importation of a more pliable labor force to keep the wheels of sugar turning in British Guiana.
