The Coming Out Of Memory: The Holocaust, Homosexuality, And Dealing With The Past, Arnaud Kurze

This research discusses the challenges of establishing a collective memory for gay victims of the Nazi terror in World War II and examines the introduction of gay victimhood into the public sphere through memorialization efforts. While scholarly accounts on gays and the Holocaust emerged in the 1970s, little is known about the emergence and consolidation of a public narrative on gay persecutions under the Nazis. It raises important questions, including why a public voice for crimes against sexual minorities in World War II emerged only hesitantly? Psychology

Ethics and ethical decision-making are important for well-functioning communities and societies, including college campuses. Yet, there are very few high quality, cost-effective, relevant, and easy-to-use assessment instruments currently available. This paper introduces the new Santa Clara Ethics Scale, a very brief no-cost questionnaire assessing general ethics. The 10-item scale was administered to 200 university students along with several other measures to assess convergent and divergent validity. Information regarding the validity and reliability of the scale along with test utility is presented. Implications for future research and use are discussed as well.

This qualitative study explores the critical consciousness development of students enrolled in a liberal arts institution. Two hundred seventy-seven students at Bethel University completed the Critical Consciousness Scale (Diemer, Rapa, Park, & Perry, 2017) and Measure of Adolescent Critical Consciousness (McWhiter & McWhirter, 2016). Based on the results of these two scales, 12 students took part in group interviews. Adolescents of color in urban communities are at high risk for contracting HIV, unlikely to have access to HIV testing services, or any other form of screening services. Using latent class analysis among a sample of African American/Black (48.1%) and Hispanic/Latina(o) (42%) youth (N = 668; Mage = 16.30; 51% female), this study examined the association cluster group membership, based on sexual negotiation skills and risk behavior, had on HIV knowledge, perception of risk, and the number of sexual partners. Five distinct cluster groups emerged, with significant heterogeneity observed between cluster groups on select dependent variables. A larger proportion of …

Commenting on Chaim Saiman’s book, Halakhah: The Rabbinic Idea of Law, this essay views the difficulty of defining halakha as indicative of the universal challenge of defining the bounds of what constitutes “law.” Considering the dynamic of contingent norms, social context, history, and narrative that shapes the meaning of law, it focuses on a series of decisions by a federal district court judge in connection with the case of Bayless v. งานวิจัยนี้ มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาปัจจัยที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการแปลงเปลี่ยนพฤติกรรมและความสำเร็จในการกลับคืนสู่สังคมของผู้เคยเป็นนักโทษสู่การเป็นนักกีฬาอาชีพ ศึกษาแนวทางการใช้กีฬาเพื่อฟื้นฟูผู้กระทำผิดและลดการกระทำผิดซ้ำ ใช้วิธีศึกษาเชิงคุณภาพโดยการค้นคว้าข้อมูลจากเอกสารทางวิชาการที่เกี่ยวข้องและการสัมภาษณ์แบบเจาะลึก เลือกกลุ่มตัวอย่างด้วยวิธีการเฉพาะเจาะจง โดยการศึกษาแบบกรณีศึกษา กลุ่มผู้ให้ข้อมูลสำคัญของการศึกษาวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพของการศึกษาวิจัยเรื่องนี้ คือ นักกีฬาอาชีพผู้ซึ่งเคยเป็นนักโทษ ผู้ทรงคุณวุฒิในระดับนโยบาย ผู้บริหารค่าย/สโมสรที่นักกีฬาสังกัดอยู่ และเพื่อนร่วมงานรวมถึงผู้ใกล้ชิด รวมทั้งสิ้น 22 ราย เครื่องมือที่ใช้ในการเก็บรวบรวมข้อมูลคือแบบสัมภาษณ์ วิเคราะห์ข้อมูลโดยพรรณนาเชิงวิเคราะห์เนื้อหา ผลการวิจัยพบว่า ปัจจัยที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการแปลงเปลี่ยนพฤติกรรมและความสำเร็จในการกลับคืนสู่สังคม ประกอบด้วย 1) แรงจูงใจ ประกอบด้วย แรงจูงใจภายนอก คือการมีเป้าหมายในความสำเร็จ การได้รับโอกาส การเป็นที่ยอมรับ การได้รับการยกย่องว่าเป็นแบบอย่าง การมีรายได้ที่เพียงพอในการดูแลครอบครัวและใช้จ่ายส่วนตัว และแรงจูงใจภายในประกอบด้วย การรับรู้ในความสามารถตนเอง ความรู้สึกว่ามีคุณค่า และความกลัวที่ต้องกลับไปรับโทษหากกระทำผิดซ้ำ 2) สภาพแวดล้อมที่ดีทางสังคม คือ ครอบครัวและเพื่อน 3) การฟื้นฟูและแก้ไขผู้กระทำผิดจากในเรือนจำ คือ การปรับเปลี่ยนทัศนคติและพฤติกรรมในระหว่างการรับโทษด้วยการใช้กีฬา โดยกรมราชทัณฑ์ได้ใช้กีฬาเพื่อฟื้นฟูผู้กระทำผิดซ้ำ เสริมสร้างสมรรถภาพร่างกาย พัฒนาด้านจิตใจ ส่งเสริมระเบียบวินัย รวมถึงมีการสนับสนุนนักโทษที่มีความสามารถในกีฬาเฉพาะด้าน ให้เข้ารับการแข่งขันในรายการต่าง ๆ ตลอดจนโครงการด้านกีฬาจากภาครัฐและเอกชนที่ให้ความร่วมมือในการสร้างโอกาสในการกลับคืนสู่สังคม

การวิเคราะห์บทบาทและการทำหน้าที่ “คนกลาง” ในกระบวนการยุติธรรมเชิงสมานฉันท์, มณีรัตน์ ชื่นเจริญ

จากผลการศึกษาพบว่าสภาพปัญหาและอุปสรรคในการทำหน้าที่ของคนกลางภายในหน่วยงานของกระบวนการยุติธรรมในสังคมไทยนั้นเกิด คนกลางยังขาดความรู้ความเข้าใจในหลักการพื้นฐานของกระบวนการยุติธรรมอย่างแท้จริง ในด้านบุคลากรปฏิบัติงานนั้นพบปัญหาในเรื่องคุณสมบัติ เทคนิค ทักษะ การสมัครใจ และความเป็นกลางของคนกลาง การมีบุคลากรที่ไม่เพียงพอ และค่าตอบแทนของบุคลากรในการปฏิบัติงานยังไม่เหมาะสม ในส่วนของปัญหาและอุปสรรคด้านกระบวนการและการบริหารจัดการในการดำเนินงานนั้นหากคนกลางไม่เตรียมความพร้อมก่อนเข้าสู่กระบวนการและในระหว่างการดำเนินการไม่สามารถควบคุมสถานการณ์ความขัดแย้งที่เกิดขึ้นได้ก็จะทำให้กระบวนการฯ ไม่สำเร็จ ส่วนทางด้านปัญหาและอุปสรรคด้านนโยบายนั้นพบว่าขาดนโยบาย แนวทาง การติดตามประเมินผลและแรงจูงใจในการปฏิบัติงานที่ต่อเนื่อง ส่วนผลการวิเคราะห์เปรียบเทียบการทำหน้าที่ของคนกลางในกระบวนการยุติธรรมเชิงสมานฉันท์ระหว่างหน่วยงานกระบวนการยุติธรรมของสังคมไทยและหลักการพื้นฐานฯ ขององค์การสหประชาชาติพบว่าการทำหน้าที่ของคนกลางนั้นมีความสอดคล้องกับหลักการพื้นฐานฯ โดยคนกลางจะมีบทบาทและทำหน้าที่เป็นผู้อำนวยความสะดวกในการเตรียมการประชุม ดำเนินการประชุม ทำการประเมินและตอบสนองต่อความต้องการของแต่ละฝ่าย พร้อมทั้งพัฒนาและดำเนินการตามแผนลดความเสี่ยง และปฏิบัติต่อผู้เข้าร่วมอย่างเป็นธรรม บริหารจัดการเวลาให้เพียงพอสำหรับกระบวนการเพื่อให้ประสบความสำเร็จ และมีการติดตามผลทั้งกับผู้กระทำความผิดเพื่อให้มั่นใจว่าได้ปฏิบัติตามข้อตกลงแล้ว และกับผู้เสียหายว่าได้รับการชดใช้เยียวยาตามข้อตกลง ในส่วนของข้อเสนอแนะและแนวทางที่เหมาะสมในการทำหน้าที่คนกลางในกระบวนการยุติธรรมเชิงสมานฉันท์นั้นพบว่าคนกลางควรมีองค์ความรู้และเข้าใจในหลักการอย่างแท้จริง และควรให้มีการเพิ่มบุคลาการปฏิบัติงาน พร้อมทั้งจะต้องผ่านการฝึกอบรม เทคนิค และทักษะ รวมทั้งจะต้องมีนโยบายอย่างต่อเนื่องในการให้ความสำคัญและการใช้กระบวนการยุติธรรมเชิงสมานฉันท์

Sociopolitical conflicts in America reveal the latent microcosms of communities, linguistic forms, bodies, and shared cultural narratives, which are driven by polarities and aggression. Considerable political alterity has arisen, promoting dehumanization, prejudice, sexism, and collective trauma as factions war over counter myths that create opposing American stories, including the debate over the role of science, the fusion of religion with politics and material gain, and the nature of truth. Individual psychic and projective events are also represented in sociopolitical events, creating aliens of external communities, promoting objectifying language, and enlisting alienation and dissonance within the self. This chapter uses the experience of two undergraduate students conducting research in their university archives to consider the “hidden curriculum” entailed in archival research at some institutions. When diverse identities and experiences are not represented in our archives, we run the risk of communicating a lack of value for those identities, producing a feeling of marginalization and exclusion for some students and foreclosing an opportunity to build solidarity across difference for others. In light of the limited holdings at many university archives and the increased prevalence of archival research in the undergraduate classroom, the authors draw on research from writing …

Inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail,” The Eloquent Letter is an authentic, adaptable assignment for acquiring critical skills: identifying and researching social problems, examining value systems and diverse perspectives, communicating effectively, and proposing solutions based on common ground. Moving beyond traditional argumentation essays and debates, this project situates activism and writing “in its native habitat.”

This Article briefly considers the origins of the term social justice and its evolution beside our understandings of human rights and liberalism, which are two other significant justice categories. After this reflection on the contemporary meaning of social justice, I suggest that vulnerability theory, which seeks to replace the rational man of liberal legal thought with the vulnerable subject, should be used to define the contours of the term. Recognition of fundamental, universal, and perpetual human vulnerability reveals the fallacies inherent in the ideals of autonomy, independence, and individual responsibility that have supplanted an appreciation of the social. This paper seeks to discuss recent sites of contestation of the implications one assigns to migration from Africa and the Middle East to Central and Western Europe. It will be predominantly Eurocentric in its data and analysis, dealing less with the motivations of the migrants and the second generation, and more with the various responses to that migration among Europeans (e.g., what are “they” doing to “us”).
