The Game Is The Game: Othermothering And Hbcu Student Affairs Job Burnout: A Quantitative Study, Adolphus A. Mcdonald Iii

All Dissertations

This study investigated the use of othermothering as a relationship building approach in student affairs at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and its association with job burnout outcomes in HBCU student affairs professionals. Job burnout outcomes affect job turnover intention decisions (Michaels & Spector, 1982); therefore, this quantitative study investigated whether othermothering and additional demographic factors were a root cause to job burnout and job turnover intention among HBCU SAPs. The review of literature provides knowledge on the foundation of othermothering which began as a term to describe Black slave women caring for children displaced and separated due to …

My Manager Endorsed My Coworkers’ Voice: Understanding Observers’ Positive And Negative Reactions To Managerial Endorsement Of Coworker Voice., Emily POULTON, Szu-Han Joanna LIN, Shereen FATIMAH, Cony HO, Lance FERRIS, Russell JOHNSON 2024 Indiana University - Bloomington

My Manager Endorsed My Coworkers’ Voice: Understanding Observers’ Positive And Negative Reactions To Managerial Endorsement Of Coworker Voice., Emily Poulton, Szu-Han Joanna Lin, Shereen Fatimah, Cony Ho, Lance Ferris, Russell Johnson

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Research on managerial voice endorsement has primarily focused on the processes and conditions through which voicers receive their managers’ endorsement. We shift this focus away from the voicers, focusing instead on the dual reactions that endorsement generates for observing employees. Drawing from an approach-avoidance framework, we propose that managerial endorsement of coworker voice could be perceived as a positive and negative stimulus for observers, prompting them to approach opportunities and avoid threats, respectively. Results from a pre-registered experiment and a multi-wave, multi-source field study revealed that managerial endorsement of coworker voice was positively related to observers’ voice instrumentality, thus prompting …

Book Review: Credible: The Power Of Expert Leaders, Carl L. Tolbert

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

Amanda Goodall’s (2023) book Credible: The Power of Expert Leaders argues why expert leaders are needed more now than ever across all organizational domains. Goodall describes the book as a chronicle of the “natural experiment” showcasing failures of nonexperts leading various sized groups and organizations, also citing parallel success by expert leaders (p. 1). The book is divided into eight chapters, starting with the introduction and examining the need for experts, the recruitment and development of experts, and finally, the organizational environment to sustain experts. The introduction begins as a corollary to Nichols’ (2024) work regarding how society no longer …

Remote Work: How Leaders Impact Employee Wellbeing, Russ Carfagno, Jonas Strömbäck, Cheryl Joyner, Gilbert Franco

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

Leaders face many challenges in motivating team members including maintaining remote workers' sense of organizational inclusion. Remote work and flexible working arrangements (FWA) have increased the complexity. Flexible working arrangements (FWA) provide value to employees and may help with work-life balance yet FWA can create employee loneliness and contribute to higher turnover. This quantitative study looked at whether leadership behavior affected remote workers’ loneliness, and the intention to quit. An online survey was conducted through LinkedIn sampling 92 adults who worked remotely at least 20 hours per week in the United States. The study found that the leader-member relationship does …

Leadershift Today: Balancing Ego And Altruism, Joan F. Marques 2024 Woodbury University

Leadershift Today: Balancing Ego And Altruism, Joan F. Marques

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

This article addresses a behavioral dichotomy that seems to be a prerequisite in proper leadership performance in today’s world, especially in organizational settings that cultivate a culture of wellness and reciprocal progress. While the involved concepts - ego and altruism - are generally familiar human traits, the need for a shift from one to the other once leadership has been attained, has not been discussed as such before. This article therefore aims to evoke within leaders the awareness of the need to shift their mindset, and therefore their behavior, from ego-driven to collective-focused once elevated into a leadership position. The …

Institutional Change And Employee Commitment In The United States Space Force, Daniel M. Dempsey

M.S. in Leadership

Change is desirable by organizations seeking to increase their competitive advantage and the United States Space Force is not immune to those same demands. As the United States’ newest military service, the Space Force initiated sweeping changes in an attempt to modernize how space operations are performed. Each of these changes imposed themselves upon stakeholders across the Space Force enterprise and my project sought understanding about their effects. With an increasing rate during the preceding decades, literary publications show linkages between the success or failure of an organization’s desired change outcomes and the level of commitment demonstrated by its employees. …

Two Houses Divided? The Parallel Histories Of The Casa De Contratación And The Casa Da Índia, 1500-1580, Gustavo L. Romero 2024 Middlebury College

Two Houses Divided? The Parallel Histories Of The Casa De Contratación And The Casa Da Índia, 1500-1580, Gustavo L. Romero

Swarthmore Undergraduate History Journal

This paper seeks to investigate the histories of the Spanish Casa de Contratación and the Portuguese Casa da Índia in relation to one another, identifying possible ways in which each drew inspiration, or imitated the other during the period from 1500 to 1580. Though there is existing research into the individual Casas, comparative approaches have generally been avoided. This work synthesizes the literature and tracks interactions or trends between the Iberian empires from both an institutional and interpersonal perspective. Through analysis of bureaucratic charters, letters, and other documents, it outlines the time periods, possible reasons, and results of this …

Identity Configuration Of Physician Clinician Educators: A Mixed Methods Study, Lindsey D. White

Organization, Information and Learning Sciences ETDs

This study explores identities of physician clinician educators (CEs) and finds that their identities are multiple and that the COVID-19 pandemic impacted CE identity configuration. Following a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design (quan -> QUAL), participants (n = 115) completed the Physician Clinician Educator Identity Survey (PCEIS) and semi-structured interviews (n = 12). Exploratory factor analysis resulted in a three-factor model; the PCEIS is an acceptable measure of singular CE identity, collective identity, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on CE identity. Qualitative results confirmed the quantitative results and revealed that CEs experience identity enhancement and conflict among multiple identities …

Too Much Of A Good Thing? Exploring Affective Commitment’S Negative Impact, Cecil W. Johnson Iii

The Scholarship Without Borders Journal

Strategies to increase organizational commitment in employees to increase retention, productivity and performance are common approaches used by leaders facilitated by human resource departments. In the past two years, there has been a surge of resignations by employees re-evaluating their relationship with employers. The employee exits have focused employers on increasing employee commitment to their organization by deploying human resource management (HRM) strategies. Organizations must reflect on the negative impact high commitment can have on employees and the companies in which they work.

This paper is an exploration of the negative impact of affective organizational commitment on employees and employers. …

A Multi-Wave Study Of Factors Associated With Resident Engagement, Depression, Burnout, And Stay Intent, Anne M. Brafford, Brendon Ellis, Greg Guldner, Gabrielle Riazi, Xitao Liu, Jessica C. Wells, Jason T. Siegel

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Background

Many studies have documented the epidemic of mental ill-being among resident physicians, but fewer have focused on mental well-being or on guiding intervention design to make progress toward positive change in residency programs to support resident thriving. Informed by the job demands-resources model (JD-R) and positive psychology, the current study examines 4 potential predictors of residents’ ill-being (burnout, depression) and well-being (engagement, stay intent) that are malleable and thus capable of change through intervention: psychological capital (PsyCap), supervising physicians’ autonomy-supportive leadership style (ASL), social support, and meaningful work.

Methods

Three waves of data were collected between November 2017 and …

Mitigating Workplace Burnout Through Transformational Leadership And Employee Participation In Recovery Experiences, John Pladdys 2024 Indiana Wesleyan University

Mitigating Workplace Burnout Through Transformational Leadership And Employee Participation In Recovery Experiences, John Pladdys

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Burnout is a complex organizational phenomenon that diminishes employee well-being and overall organizational productivity. Researchers propose that leadership style contributes to employees’ well-being, which impacts employee productivity. Organizations and leaders must address the causes of burnout and promote techniques employees can use to mitigate burnout, such as employee participation in recovery experiences. Recovery experiences are non-work activities that create positive outlooks and restore the energy needed to focus on one’s work.

This literature review examines current research in employee recovery experiences, conservation of resource theory (COR), burnout, and transformational leadership theory. Studying burnout through the lens of COR shows how …

Extension Mentors: What They Do And What They Need, Amy Harder, Karlibeth Leitheiser, Olivia Caillouet

Journal of Extension

Extension mentors are charged with guiding early-career agents in many states, but little is known about what they do and how it compares to best practices. The purpose of our study was to identify the behaviors and needs of UF/IFAS Extension agents serving as mentors. We used an online survey of active mentors to collect data about their self-perceptions of their mentor functions, communication with their protégés, and the types of desired support. Mentors felt they were performing role modeling and career development functions more than psychosocial support functions. More comprehensive professional development is recommended to improve mentoring quality.

Gender Inequality Is Not A "Women Only" Issue: A Case Study Of Egyptian Private News Media, Amira Ahmed

Theses and Dissertations

Discrimination in the workplace among different genders is a significant issue in the news media sector globally. This study aims to determine and measure gender inequality in the Egyptian private news media sector through different indicators, including job payments, workload, promotions, media roles, work safety, and work flexibility, especially post-COVID. A mixed approach was used by conducting sixteen interviews and then a survey of 304 private news media sector participants. As inequalities can be a double-faced case, men's and women's perspectives have been considered in the study sample. Through descriptive and statistical analysis, the research findings revealed new insights to …

Threats Of Neoliberalism To Western Democracies And The Efficacy Of Neoliberal Critiques, Anis Zaman 2024 Portland State University

Threats Of Neoliberalism To Western Democracies And The Efficacy Of Neoliberal Critiques, Anis Zaman

Hatfield Graduate Journal of Public Affairs

Abstract A neoliberal market-based governance system has engulfed Western democratic societies. Since it surfaced in the 1980s, neoliberalism remained the dominant governing system. The pervasive neoliberal governance logic has become deeply entrenched in our society in ways that make it less democratic. More so, market-based neoliberal dominant economic and political logic has caused a problematic drift in democratic political discourse by turning progressive political forces less progressive. While there is a superficial agreement between neoliberalism and democratic values at a deeper level, the two are in conflict. In contemporary governance practices, we can see the neoliberal takeover in most sectors …
