The Effectiveness Of Visual Vs. Auditory Presentation Of Information On Memory, Hannah L. Edwards
The Effectiveness Of Visual Vs. Auditory Presentation Of Information On Memory, Hannah L. Edwards
Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal
This research project aimed to determine whether it was easier for individuals to memorize and recall words when being presented with a visual presentation than with an auditory presentation. Method: To gather data, an online survey was designed and conducted to test participants more sufficiently. This study consisted of individuals that were 18 years or older and who have good visual and auditory abilities. This study was conducted using two lists of 10 words that contained six letters, three syllables, and were nouns. Half of my participants were presented with 10 words visually whereas the other half of the participants …

Hearing Productivity: Music And Productivity Study, Sydney Beins
Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal
The current study explored the research question which music genre increases one’s productivity the most? Methods: Data was collected from 45 participants from social media (Reddit, Instagram, Twitter) and the Lindenwood Participant Pool. An online Qualtrics survey was created to test participants productivity through typing tasks and a few demographic questions were asked at the end. Participants were asked to type as many nonsense words as they could in a minute while having one of the four music genres: R&B, classical, Latin, and rap playing in the background. The task was completed four times so all participants were exposed to …

An Investigation Of Resistance Training Behavior, Non-Specific Psychological Distress, And Perceived Barriers To Resistance Training In Self-Identifying Female Undergraduate Students, Jody Sobel
Master's Theses
The prevalence and severity of depression symptoms amongst college students, specifically female identifying undergraduate students, is worrisome. There is a great deal of research that suggests a relationship between exercise, specifically resistance training (RT), and mental health. That said, current literature suggests that many female identifying students are not engaging due to perceived barriers. This, perhaps because of the plethora of barriers one can perceive. The purpose of this study was multifold 1) to examine the prevalence and severity of non-specific psychological distress; 2) to determine if there were differences between Kessler 6 Non-Specific Psychological Distress Scale (K6) categories (i.e., …

Objective: This observational study aimed to determine whether attachment style predicted first responders' mental health and resilience. Method: Data were from a treatment-seeking sample of first responders (N = 237). Each participant completed six assessments measuring attachment, resilience, generalized anxiety, depression, suicidality, and posttraumatic stress disorder. Results: On the attachment assessment, 25.3%were categorized as secure, 19.0%as dismissive, 25.3% as preoccupied, and 30.4% as fearfully attached. As predicted, securely attached participants had the lowest scores for generalized anxiety, depression, suicidality, and posttraumatic stress disorder and the highest scores on the resiliency measure, followed by dismissive, preoccupied, and fearfully …
Nature And Nurture: How They Play A Role In Serial Killers And Their Victims (1970-1999), Sarah Mroczkowski
Nature And Nurture: How They Play A Role In Serial Killers And Their Victims (1970-1999), Sarah Mroczkowski
Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
Investigating the relationship between a serial killer’s nature (their biological makeup) and nurture (their learned behavior) is important due to the fact that any trauma they experienced as a child makes them more likely to offend as an adult. This study investigated how nature (e.g., biological brain damage and the MAOA gene) and nurture (e.g., their physical upbringing) affected serial killers, specifically the number of their victims, during the ‘serial killer era’ (1970 to 1999). All serial killers meeting our criteria were studied to determine to what extent they were abused as a child, the number of victims they had, …
Mind Over Matter: The Role Of Resilience, Crime Victimization, And Age At The Time Of Victimization On Psychological Health, Alana Compton
Mind Over Matter: The Role Of Resilience, Crime Victimization, And Age At The Time Of Victimization On Psychological Health, Alana Compton
Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between crime victimization, age at the time of victimization, psychological health, and resilience. Past research has shown that crime victimization has been linked to higher levels of depression and suicidal ideation, anxiety, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and eating disorders, and that those who experience a traumatic event as a child are influenced more negatively than those who experience trauma as an adult. Additionally, resilience has been shown to mediate the influence that trauma has on an individual. Undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty and staff were surveyed to determine their …
Exploring The Connections Between Craving, Depression, Sleep & Alcohol Use In Emerging Adults, Katie Moskal
Exploring The Connections Between Craving, Depression, Sleep & Alcohol Use In Emerging Adults, Katie Moskal
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Alcohol use among emerging adults is a public health concern as it has been associated with negative consequences, such as accidental injury (Hingson et al., 2009). Given the negative consequences experienced for emerging adults, there is a need to identify factors contributing to alcohol use to determine ways to reduce these consequences. Poor sleep has been associated with higher alcohol-related consequences (Miller et al., 2016), and alcohol use has been associated with poor sleep (Goodhines, Gellis, Kim, et al., 2019), however there may be other factors contributing to this relationship, such as alcohol craving and depression. Higher alcohol craving has …
Sexism's Effect On Female Suicide Ideation & Non-Suicidal Self-Injury Through Body Surveillance & Self-Esteem, Caitlin Gregory
Sexism's Effect On Female Suicide Ideation & Non-Suicidal Self-Injury Through Body Surveillance & Self-Esteem, Caitlin Gregory
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Research has shown that women face an average of three sexist events per week (Fischer & Holz, 2010). These sexist experiences can present within domains of daily living, social media usage, workplace discrimination, psychological distress, and sexual objectification (Baires & Koch, 2020; Duggan, 2014; Oswald, et al. 2019; Perez, 2019; Rollero, 2013). Additionally, the literature has shown that types of sexist experiences can determine the severity of the impact on mental health outcomes, as benevolent sexism has showcased significant consequences on females’ self-esteem and body objectification and hostile sexism has been shown to impact selfevaluation and self-worth (Calogero & Jost, …
Impact Of Students' Off-Task Technology Use During Instruction On Teachers, David Lancaster
Impact Of Students' Off-Task Technology Use During Instruction On Teachers, David Lancaster
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The increase of technology in educational classrooms has changed the way instruction is delivered and received, positively and negatively. When technology is used for off-task purposes, negative effects on student learning are well-documented. However, little research has been conducted on the effect of student off-task technology use on teachers. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of off-task technology use during instruction on K-12 teachers, while including more modern devices. Two hundred sixty-two Kentucky K-12 teachers completed online surveys in which their perceptions of multitasking, views of the impact of off-task technology use on students, and on …

Agreement Of Psychiatric Diagnoses Within And Between Groups Of Mental Health Clinicians From Different Disciplines, Wade Mcguire
Agreement Of Psychiatric Diagnoses Within And Between Groups Of Mental Health Clinicians From Different Disciplines, Wade Mcguire
Dissertations
The development of therapy as a treatment option for mental health problems has led to the creation of different disciplines. Each discipline has developed its own conceptualization of classification and treatment of mental health problems. These conceptualizations have led to different areas of focus for each of the disciplines, specifically counseling, psychology, and social work. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether these areas of focus influence how each discipline diagnoses. For this study, data was collected by having clinicians provide diagnoses for three fictitious clients. The vignettes for the clients were taken from a psychopathology textbook to …
Inner Portraits, Bethany Salisbury
Inner Portraits, Bethany Salisbury
Graduate Theses
This paper investigates the many interconnected layers of women’s mental health through portraiture and how animal and plant symbolism can represent the way women's hormones and bodily health affect their mental health. I reveal how the artwork created presents these connections and inner mental health narratives to the viewer, creating a space of empathy, destigmatization, and self-reflection. This body of portraiture art connects five women through a series of both two-and three-dimensional portraits based on interviews using my own adaptation of Sara Lawrence-Lightfoots’ (1983) portrait methodology.
Women and non-binary individuals have always dealt with difficult interactions of bodily and mental …
Investigating The Psychology Of Morbid Curiosity: The Role Of Needing To Know, Hanna Rose Harbison Ruedisili
Investigating The Psychology Of Morbid Curiosity: The Role Of Needing To Know, Hanna Rose Harbison Ruedisili
Psychology Honors Projects
The goal of this study was to investigate the psychological factors that motivate morbidly curious behavior, specifically the cognitive motivation to learn new information. Participants were shown various morbid and non-morbid control images, sometimes with a preview and sometimes without a preview. The preview condition created a situation in which the target image contained no new information, thereby removing the opportunity to learn more information. For each image, participants were asked to complete a visual search task unrelated to the content of the image as quickly as possible. If morbid content distracted participants from the visual search task, then response …
Through The Looking Glass: Investigating Incivility Through A Cognitive Process Lens, Melissa Sorenson
Through The Looking Glass: Investigating Incivility Through A Cognitive Process Lens, Melissa Sorenson
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Experiencing incivility at work is a common phenomenon that individuals encounter. The effects of experiencing incivility are not bound to the workplace and continue to negatively impact individuals after they leave work. However, little is known about the mechanisms which transmit the experience of incivility at work to a person’s non-work domain. One such mechanisms that may be associated with the negative impact of incivility at work in the nonwork domain is depletion, which represents a reduced state of cognitive impact. Additionally, the use of active coping mechanisms may buffer the effects of experienced incivility on depletion. In this study, …

Opportunities For Learning And Social Interaction In Infant Sitting: Effects Of Sitting Support, Sitting Skill, And Gross Motor Delay, Kari S. Kretch, Emily C. Marcinowski, Hsu Lin-Ya, Natalie A. Koziol, Regina T. Harbourne, Michele A. Lobo, Stacey C. Dusing
Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families, and Schools: Faculty Publications
The development of independent sitting changes everyday opportunities for learning and has cascading effects on cognitive and language development. Prior to independent sitting, infants experience the sitting position with physical support from caregivers. Why does supported sitting not provide the same input for learning that is experienced in independent sitting? This question is especially relevant for infants with gross motor delay, who require support in sitting for many months after typically developing infants sit independently. We observed infants with typical development (n = 34, ages 4–7 months) and infants with gross motor delay (n = 128, ages 7–16 …

Addressing The Complexity Of Mental Health Care For Youth Experiencing Houselessness, Sarah Hamilton
Addressing The Complexity Of Mental Health Care For Youth Experiencing Houselessness, Sarah Hamilton
Psychology Honors Projects
Children and youth experiencing houselessness have a unique set of mental health needs due to the traumatic experience of houselessness during childhood and the other adverse childhood experiences that often coincide with houselessness (van der Kolk, 2003; Wong et al., 2016). They face immense barriers in access to mental health care due to logistical factors as a result of their housing status and socio-structural factors (Krippel et al., 2020; Gallardo et al., 2020; Bradley et al., 2018). However, existing studies reveal a lack of evidence-based interventions for children and youth experiencing houselessness and a lack of insight from mental health …
A Systematic Review Of Cultural Adaptations Of School-Based Social, Emotional & Behavioral Interventions For Students Of Color: A Replication & Update Of Brown Et Al, 2018, Courtney Coleman
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Underrepresented minority students are excluded from schools for disciplinary reasons at a higher rate than majority students. School-based positive social, emotional, and behavioral interventions could be implemented to support URM students who have behavioral needs. These interventions might need adaptations to meet the needs of diverse students in K-12 schools. However, there have been limited syntheses of these adaptations. The purpose of this review is to update Brown et al.’s (2018) systematic review of culture adaptations to social, emotional, and behavioral interventions. The current article pool consisted of seven articles from 2016 to 2021. The seven articles for the current …
Opinion & The Insanity Plea: What Can A Little Education Do?, Anna Raker
Opinion & The Insanity Plea: What Can A Little Education Do?, Anna Raker
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The misconceptions regarding the insanity defense have often left bias rampant within the court room. Within this study, the goal was to understand the relationship between education via an expert witness and how it changes one’s verdict on a case where the insanity defense is used. Participants were given a vignette regarding the circumstances of an NGRI defense case, and then randomly assigned to a control video and a myth video. The control video talked about the circumstances around assessment, and insignificant details of the case, while the myth version discussed the common myths and misconceptions regarding the insanity defense. …
A Systematic Review Of The Relation Of Restorative Justice Principles & Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports In K-12 Schools, Katherine Richardson
A Systematic Review Of The Relation Of Restorative Justice Principles & Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports In K-12 Schools, Katherine Richardson
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Alternatives to punitive punishment and discipline have gained popularity as research has supported the advances towards safer and more positive school communities. This includes multi-tiered service models, such as Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS). Additionally, a restorative justice (RJ) approach can offer non-punitive, relationship-centered practices for avoiding and addressing harm, responding to violations of legal and human rights, and collaboratively solving problems. However, limited research has been conducted looking at the connection between RJ practices and frameworks such as PBIS, which are already implemented in a many schools. The purpose of this systematic literature review was to review the …
Applying Functional Analysis In A School Setting, Elizabeth Young
Applying Functional Analysis In A School Setting, Elizabeth Young
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Literature has implied that the use of functional analysis (FA) procedure within the school setting can be beneficial in determining the function of problem behavior. However, conducting an FA in a school setting can be challenging due to the expertise, resources, and experimental control needed to complete such an evaluation. The purpose of the current study was to examine the feasibility of conducting a FA within the school setting to determine the function(s) of severe problem behavior. The research questions are: (1) Can a multielement FA be used to infer the function of a student’s problem behavior in a public …
Leaders' Virtual & In-Person Communication: The Impact Of Employee Preference On Job Satisfaction, Adalin Mcdaniel
Leaders' Virtual & In-Person Communication: The Impact Of Employee Preference On Job Satisfaction, Adalin Mcdaniel
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Communication between supervisors and subordinates has consistently been viewed as a primary element of leadership, and a factor that is important in the leader-subordinate relationship via Leader-Member Exchange (LMX) theory. Recently, with the massive shift to virtual working, leadership communication has gained greater prominence in research and practical settings. Therefore, examining the role that virtual leadership communication plays in employee job satisfaction is an important first step in beginning to understand the shift to predominant work settings from home. I examined the influence of employee perceptions and preferences of leadership communication on job satisfaction via a panel design in which …
A Review Of Traumatic Brain Injury In School Psychology Journals, Casey Gillispie
A Review Of Traumatic Brain Injury In School Psychology Journals, Casey Gillispie
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
TBI is the leading cause of childhood injury, death, and disability. School psychologists play a key role in providing students with TBI services within the school setting; therefore, it is essential for school psychologists to be familiar with TBI research. Previous research indicates a lack of TBI literature within school psychology journals. The current review examined TBI publications in school psychology journals over the past 38 years to provide an update on issues raised by Smith and Canto (2015). Eight school psychology journals were examined to gather data about the frequency of articles related to TBI, types of TBI articles, …
Before And After The World Turned Virtual: Examining Intimate Partner Violence And Problematic Alcohol Use Before Versus During The Covid-19 Pandemic In A Couple's Based Sample, Ishita Munshi
ETD Archive
About 1 in 4 women and 1 in 10 men report experiencing intimate partner violence (IPV) in their lifetime. For several decades, problematic alcohol use is a consistent predictor of IPV perpetration. However, as the COVID-19 pandemic transformed the romantic lives of people, it is crucial to investigate how it may have altered the prevalence of IPV perpetration and the link between IPV perpetration and problematic alcohol use. Among a sample of dating young adult couples, this study compared the IPV prevalence pre-COVID-19 pandemic (Wave 1) to during COVID-19 conditions (Wave 2). Furthermore, the study examined if problematic alcohol use …
Using A Thin Slice Coding Approach To Measure Temperament Traits In Youth, Sara J. Conley
Using A Thin Slice Coding Approach To Measure Temperament Traits In Youth, Sara J. Conley
ETD Archive
Researchers have demonstrated that unacquainted observers can reliably rate children’s personality traits based on initial impressions, called the thin slice (TS) method (Tackett et al., 2016). Temperament describes characteristics a child is born with and consists of a child's ability to cope with emotion, activity level, ability to focus, and mood; temperament has been shown to map onto personality traits in reliable ways (Rothbart & Bates 1998). Although TS personality has been correlated with temperament traits in a clinical sample of youth (Brandes et al., 2020), it is unclear whether the TS approach can be applied to temperament traits in …
Post-Traumatic Stress Symptoms And Their Role In Intimate Relationships: Do Ptsd Symptoms Moderate The Relationship Between Conflict And Aggression In Military Servicepeople?, Hannah M. Breen
ETD Archive
Military servicepeople often find themselves facing symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) following their service. The symptoms of PTSD can impact the functioning of servicepeople’s intimate relationships, particularly in the aspect of conflict and aggression. The present study aimed to assess the effect of a military-involved partner’s PTSD symptoms on the association between relationship conflict and aggression from the perspectives of both partners. Data were collected from 112 military-involved individuals (active-duty or veteran) and 16 couples (one military-involved partner and one civilian partner) who participated in an online survey which collected data on their romantic relationships. It was hypothesized that …

Detecting Callous Unemotional Traits In A Community Sample Of Adolescents: An Extension Of The Thin Slice Assessment Approach, Sophia V. Cook
ETD Archive
Despite a large body of research focusing on aggression, it remains a leading problem for youth, and leaves experts struggling to find a fast and reliable approach to identify related traits. Callous-unemotional traits (CU) are viewed as lack of guilt, limited display of emotion, absence of empathy, and the use of others for one’s own gain (Frick et al., 2002; Frick & White, 2008). Researchers have shown a significant correlation between CU traits and aggressive behaviors associated with conduct problems (Essau et al., 2006). Thin slicing (TS) has been defined as quick judgements based on brief excerpts of expressive behavior …
Associations Between Attachment Style, Emotion Regulation And Well-Being Among Informal Caregivers Of Person With Dementia: A Stress Process Perspective, Meghan V. Paulo
Associations Between Attachment Style, Emotion Regulation And Well-Being Among Informal Caregivers Of Person With Dementia: A Stress Process Perspective, Meghan V. Paulo
ETD Archive
The negative outcomes for a caregiver for a person with dementia (PWD), such as burden and depression, are well-studied and established. However, the individual differences that may buffer against negative outcomes are still to be explored. Attachment orientation and emotion regulatory abilities have been shown to influence health and well-being outcomes within this population. Secure attachment is considered a protective factor in the development of psychopathology and physical health outcomes. Emotion regulation is an important part of a caregiver’s daily functioning for managing challenging care tasks. With a theoretical model of caregiving as the foreground of this work, these variables …

The Impact Of Quarantine And Substance Use On Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms During The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Longitudinal Study On Emerging Adults, Madeleine Reinhardt
ETD Archive
The COVID-19 pandemic is a collective trauma that caused profound disruptions in day-to-day life and negatively impacted the psychological well-being of many emerging adults. Existing research shows that experiencing quarantine due to disease exposure or illness exacerbates psychological distress, particularly among people with existing symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (Solomon et al., 2021). Research points to problematic alcohol and other substance use as a mechanism in the development and maintenance of PTSD (Tripp et al., 2020). However, alcohol and other substance use has yet to be implicated in the exacerbation of PTSD symptoms among emerging adults in the context of …
